Questions & Answers
Question : How to get better at guitar?
I like Indie rock music mostly.Stuff Like - Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party, Milburn...I have played for about 7 months so far, I had about 10 guitar lessons at the start. Will having more guitar lessons help?I have a squire strat and the amp isn't very good either. Will it help if i get a better guitar and amp?Im not very good at barre chords because it takes me a while to put my fingers in the right place, even though I remember where to put them.thanks

Answer:
First answer gave the true answer: Practice, practice, practice.Set aside time each day for practice, even if only warm-up exercises on some days when you're jammed for time: You lose a great deal of strength and flexibility if you let a day pass.At the beginning use the orthodox hand position, with your thumb on the center-line of the back of the neck. This gives a good anchor for the rest of the hand to work against, and affords the fretting fingers a good position to contact the strings squarely. As you gain strength and flexibility you will be able to switch between the orthodox and the steel string "Baseball bat" grip. You are not learning a music style, you are learning the guitar. When you get good at the guitar then you can worry about a particular style.Your gear is fine, Squier Strats are quite good guitars, although of course Genuine Fenders are better, but I would not hesitate to play a Squier in public, and many pros use Squiers in live settings. At this point as long as your amp produces a clean sound that's all you need. Work on learning to play the guitar, not the amp.

Question : Distortion Pedal for Beginner Guitarist?
I've been playing my Fender Strat electric guitar for about 8 months using plain amp distortion, which is really fuzzy. I'd like something with a large range of sounds, used for playing heavier rock songs. However, I'm on a tight budget. I'm not willing to spend more than $100. I'm looking into the Bad Monkey and possibly the DigiTech RP150. Are these good models, or is there something a lot better?

Answer:
Boss makes some great pedals. Id go with the Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion pedal. It handles a lot and its around 65$. Its great, I used it on stage for guns and roses songs and Def Leppard songs.

Question : How do I get a better guitar tone?
I get pretty crappy distortion on both of my amps. I'm looking for a distortion similar to Eddie Van Halen or John Petrucci (Images And Words). I believe the problem is my amps and pedals ( I own to amps hence I have to setup rigs). I'll tell you both set ups I use here.Setup 1:Amp - Fender Stage 1000. Note: ( I do not use the amp distortion as a enhancer - only pedals).Guitar - PRS SEPedal - Boss DS - 1 DistortionSetup 2:Amp - Epiphone Valvle Jr. (Tube amp, I usually crank it 3/4 or 4/4 - but it gets very muddy)Guitar - PRS SEPedals - Digi-tech Bad Monkey OverdriveThose are my two setups.I am personally disappointed with my distortion in both cases. I know my guitar is good, the pickups are fine. My Stage 1000 has a very good clean tone but once i smack down on the DS-1 all that goes to poop. The DS-1 has no volume to it, it makes my tone sound sharp and crappy. The valve jr. I believe needs a eq pedal but I'm not sure, the amp only has one knob which is volume so I can not control the mids and what not.Can someone please suggest me ideas on what to do or if I should buy new pedals, or perhaps even a new amp. I like my PRS very much and I do not believe that is the problem. Do not recommend me a Metal Zone, I have tried one and I though it was crap. Please, if you recommend me pedals, I am willing to pay up to $100 but not much more. Thanks guys, I'm tired of my crap tone. When I say my DS1 has no volume I mean that the tone it produces is thin and not thick distortion like I would prefer. All the knobs on my pedals work.

Answer:
You have basically answered your own question. Neither of these amps are going to cut it. You will need a quality amp first and then possibly add a little flavor with pedals. Also, in all fairness, neither of these pedals are exactly top of the line. The Boss is OK ... if you have a great amp sound to begin with.Your Fender is the wrong kind of amp for your sound references (even some of their better and hotter tube amps may be a little too "sparkly" for your ideal sounds). The Epiphone is too small (volume wise and speaker wise) - also, it probably isn't near the basic sound you would need. Most quality tube amps with a decent size should potentially get you much closer to a nice starting point: Orange, Marshall, Blackstar, Blackheart, Dr Z, Mesa Boogie, Vox, Bad Cat, Peavey, Diezel, Bogner, Bugera, Matchless, Buddha, Hiwatt, Soldano, Gabriel - the list goes on and on...The recipe is simple really: Quality guitar (like your PRS), quality leads (the best ones are expensive but worth every penny), quality pedals and quality amps :-)

Question : looking for settings for my amp?
I have a line 6 spider IV 150 watt amp with an FBV MkII short board. I was wondering where I can get pre-made settings to apply to my amp. I use the program line 6 monkey and spider IV edit to change my settings, so even if it is a PDF file that shows what different settings i can use would be more than helpful... Thank you much!!!

Question : Which guitar amp is best for me?
First off, i know it depends on which one you play, but i mean in general. Some more details: On a budget of about 400 bucks, i play arctic monkeys, clash, rhcp. i will be playing through a telecaster

Answer:
Hello there,Well the amp may not be more importaint than the guitar, but I consider it equally important. I suggest a beginner plan on spending half the budget on the amp. A great guitar played through a lousy amp is going to sound lousy. A mediocre guitar played through a good amp is going to sound decent. So many beginners are more concerned about the pickups they have or the strings they have than they are about the amp and speakers. Also, I am not one that thinks the type of amp you play depends on what genre you play. Most amps are versatile and handle many genres. Most players do not play strickly one and only one genre of music. The exception is probably metal. Not all amps handle metal equally well. And many metal players do strictly metal. Also because most players fine tune their sound through the use of effects pedals, I feel many amps will work for most players.I am guessing you are a beginner or at least fairly inexperienced and you plan to use your amp in home and maybe to jam with others. Perhaps even some small venue gigs. I will base my answer on those presumptions.I do not think much of the so-called practice amps (the 15 to 20 watt jobbies). I think those are toys for kids and not something to make music with. I objection to those are the speakers. The little 6 inch or 8 inch speakers sound tinny to me. If you are playing metal, you need better speakers. Sure you can modify a practice amp to make it sound good. I have one that I turned into a head and run through some decent speakers in an extension cab. But why should a beginner bother with all that. So, I suggest you stay away from those, no matter what brand. Since you are a beginner, you do not know what makes a good amp and good speakers. Therefore, follow this simple rule in your shopping and you most likely will be safe when buying a first amp. Look for a combo amp with 12 inch speaker(s). A combo amp is one that has both the amplifiier and the speakers in the same cabinet. The opposite is the stack, where your amp is in a head and the speakers are in a separate cabinet. No matter which brand you decide to get, if it has a 12 inch speaker (or 2 of them) it will be a pretty good amp. Sure there are great combo amps with 10 inch speakers, but since you do not know a great amp from a lousy amp, just limit your search to one with a 12 speaker. Also, to keep the amp within your budget, look for a good deal on a used amp. You can buy a better used amp for the same money as a lesser new amp. Makes your money go farther. Check your local want ads, Craigslist, the Trader and the like. Also look on eBay. I see a lot of good 1x12 or 2x12 combo amps sell there at very attractive prices.Brands, not as important as the what I said above, but you still need some ideas. Fender, Vox, Peavey Crate, Marshall and Line 6 all make good amps. I like the vintage Kustom stacks, but those are now pricey. In your budget, you will not find full tube amps. However, there are a lot of very good solid state amps. And for beginners, solid state is probably better because you do not have to be concerned with care and maintenance. You just flip the switch on solid state and start playing. Fender are probably my favorite amps, but I do not think they are best for metal. I also am very fond of vintage Vox amps, but the new solid state ones I do not care for with metal. That leaves Marshall, Peavey, Crate and Line 6. Marshall is always a good choice for metal. So is Peavey. However, I would suggest making your number one choice a Line 6 1x12. That is a little more versatile. You may be satisfied with the built-in effects. If not, you need to add a Metal Zone 2 pedal for distortion. Overall, I suggest you take the best deal you can find in a 1x12 or 2x12 combo amp that ie either a Line 6, Marshall or Peavey. Next down would be Crate and Vox. Finally (my pet) Fender.Later,Here are some recent sales at eBay to illustrate my point.Linr 6 Dpider III 1x12 sold for $114 http://cgi.ebay.com/Line-6-Spider-III-1x12-75-watt-combo-BARELY-USED-/150447627604?cmd=ViewItem&pt=L H_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2307609d54Marshall 5010 1x12 sold for $77http://cgi.ebay.com/Marshall-5010-Master-Lead-Combo-Amplifier-1x12-30w-/130393860099?cmd=ViewItem &pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e5c146803Peavey Studie 1x12 sold for $91http://cgi.ebay.com/Peavey-Studio-Pro-112-Transtube-Series-/220606993834?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_Defau ltDomain_0&hash=item335d3395aaLine 6 Spider II 1x12 sold for $86http://cgi.ebay.com/Line-6-Spider-II-112-30-Watt-Amplifier-/220608729726?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_Defau ltDomain_0&hash=item335d4e127eCrate GTD 120 2x12 sold for $61!http://cgi.ebay.com/Crate-GTD-120-212-Three-Channel-Guitar-Amplifier-Amp-/290435201014?cmd=ViewI tem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item439f4977f6Line 6 Spider III 2x12 could not even sell at $200 (this is a great amp, but did not get a $200 bid used);.http://cgi.ebay.com/Line6-Spider3-150watt-2x1

Answer:
You can get a decent processor for around $100. The Digitech RP80 is under $100. The last RP 150 I saw was $130. The Bad Monkey is an overdrive pedal. Unless you have good tube amp, it will sound worse than what you have. The RP80 is a good processor for the money, and you'll get a myriad of other effects to play with also. Good luck to you.

Question : What would be a better boost: An Overdrive pedal or EQ pedal?
So, I'm getting a Randall RG80ES. I want to get a high-gain tone, but the only way you can get it without anything in front of the amp is to pull the treble knob, and that lowers the volume dramatically, which is bad for gigging. So, my question is, what would be the best way to boost the amp?I know that Dimebag used 2 different EQ's, a Furman PQ and an MXR 6-band blue box model (which people claim distort more then the current one). This would be better for shaping my tone, but I think this route would be more expensive.I've also heard of people using overdrive pedals (like the BOSS SD-1) to overdrive their amps. I plan on getting a Digitech Bad Monkey for more tone-shaping versatility. So, my question is, what would be the better way to boost the gain on the amp?

Answer:
i dont know nearly as much as i know about keyboard but i know exactly what you feel i try to get a nice clean high gain tone like i see all these people with on youtube but i cant do it without the volume going to extremes, then you toss the treble and it just feels plain weak. i personally am a fan of distortion, Eq pedals are too much for me (hey thats just me) but the bad monkey sounds like a safe bet even if you cant decide cause it has its own eq controls. plus its not that expensive, and i hear the RG80es is a great sounding amp, so if no one on here can give you a great reason to choose one over the other, go with the bad monkey, im sure youll be able to work out a sound you like, if you dont find what youre looking for, maybe youll find a sound you didnt know you were looking for. thats the fun of music if you ask me, good luck dude!

Question : Christmas Gift for an indie/tech boyfriend... who has everything he could ever want?
Christmas is creeping ever closer - which means I am getting more frustrated and nervous about what to get my boyfriend of almost 1 year. Here's a bit of insight:*He has every electronic device he could ever need: iPod, camera, DVD player, Blue-ray, TV, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Laptop, Speaker system, guitar, amp, headphones... etc. The only thing he doesn't have is a turntable/record player and unfortunately, a nice turntable is out of my pricerange.*He LOVES LOVES LOVES and THRIVES on music, especially indie music. His favorite album is "The Moon & Antarctica" by Modest Mouse and is currently on an Animal Collective kick. In addition, he likes Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown, Spoon, Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (just to name a few)- I know most of you will suggest that I get him a band tshirt, but he subscribes to a band tshirt magazine and has over 30 different band tshirts.*He does not like watches and already has very expensive cologne. *His sister works at American Eagle and gets 40% off, so she is in charge of buying him clothes*I already made him a king-size fleece collegiate printed tie blanket for his birthday and I've written him many poems and love letters before.*He likes to watch football, but he's not a huge fan so team apparel isn't a good choice. He's difficult to buy for... Thanks in advance for all your help!*Additionally, he has access to free music, does not want a netflix or gamefly subscription, and I've already written him a song... =\*Thanks for the idea, but I've already looked into 15 of his favorite bands and none of them have concerts in the area. He has all the video games he could ever want... he buys them discount price online

Answer:
i understand your dilemna, i am facing a similar one myself!try looking up concerts in your area, and buy him concert tickets for a band he likes! that might be perfect for him!if that doesnt work.. is he into video games? maybe you could buy him the latest game that he's been wanting but hasnt bought yet.good luck!

Question : Can someone give me advice as to get the right sound out of my amp?
I'm playing through a crate v-series tube amp. Very loud and ideal for blues players. However I play metal and I need the right mixture of pedals to acquire my desired sound. I have a DS-1 Distortion pedal and a Bad Monkey Tube Overdrive. As of right now my sound is very muddy and the soloing isn't clear at all. I'm looking for more clarity. Higher highs. mid mid-range and mid lows. A mixture of Killswitch Engage, Trivium, and Protest the Hero.

Answer:
I haven't a clue what those bands sound like....but I have a suggestion about your distortion. Use one or the other, but not both pedals. I would think you can get all the distortion you need from either one. Try using your bridge pickup for a brighter sound, and back off the mids on the amp. Set your amp as clean as you can, and let the distortion pedal do the work. If you send a distorted signal into an overdriven amp, you'll get mud.
