Questions & Answers
Question : What Ice Hockey Skates do you recommend?
I'm getting back into skating now. I used to have Bauer 3000 Supreme and thought they were a bit heavy. Any advice on what good Ice Hockey Skates I should switch to? I think I want something used by forwards and something that is less than $100. Thanks!

Answer:
You can get cheap skates at used sports equipment stores like play it again sports and recycled sports. Look for a pair with little wear and tear and they will last you a long time. Otherwise check out the weekly flyers at your local sports store and wait for a deal. Pick up a pair of skates that is light, durable, has a reinforced toe (to protect from other skates cutting it up), and also look for a stiff back (the part that goes from the heel up the leg) if this is flimsy some energy is lost in your stride.

Question : Is it okay to use hockey ice skates to learn skating if we can't find figure skates?
My 7 yr old is learning to ice skate just so he can use it recreationally. I am having a hard time finding figure skates for him. Is it okay to learn on hockey skates? We don't plan on playing hockey. I've heard that once you use hockey skates it's hard to go back to figure skates. Any tips or advise will be appreciated.

Answer:
I wouldn't suggest getting him hockey skates. Hockey skates have a different blade and structure. They don't have a toe pick so when he does get figure skates it will be hard for him to get used to them, he'd probably be tripping over the toe pick a lot. I also think the blades are thinner. My little brother would always use figure skates to go ice skating and then one time he had to use hockey skates and he said it was a lot harder to balance because the blade was thinner. Hockey skates are made for hockey so i wouldn't suggest using them for figure skating. If your trying to find them at your pro shop it's going to be hard because they don't sell a lot there. I went there one time looking for figure skates and all they had was some cheap ones and hockey skates. Get his feet measured and look online for figure skates. Here's a website:http://www.figureskatingdeals.comI'd suggest the Reidell 21 or the Jackson artiste for beginners

Question : what kind if ice hockey skates should i buy?
I want to buy a pair of ice hockey skates. what kind are the best? i know how to skate and i am looking for a good pair of ice hockey skates that arent to expensive. what kinds are good?

Answer:
Nike/Bauer, mission and Easton are all good brands

Question : How often should I sharpen my ice hockey skates?
I'm new to ice hockey, how often should I get my skates sharpened? I'm in a league but we only play once a week.

Answer:
after every two weeks that you play. don't sharpen them too often because they will break/get too thin if sharpened too frequently.

Question : Hockey Rollerblades vs Hockey Ice Skates?
I just starting playing ice hockey about a year ago and I was wondering if there is a specific roller hockey skate that would feel similar to an ice hockey skate. Thanks!

Answer:
Finding comparable boots isn't too hard. It's the chassis you need to worry about.Try to find a shorter chassis that is lower to the ground and has a rocker feature. You may also want to stay away from hi-lo set-ups.When I played in-line during the summertime, I'd go with a chassis that had a 76mm max clearance, with 72mm wheels and the front wheel rockered. That setup allowed me to best replicate an ice blade by keeping me a little lower and minimizing my wheelbase. I sacrificed some speed as compared to other guys out there but, I was looking for a workout, anyhow. lol

Question : How do you skate backwards on hockey ice skates?
I don't play hockey or take lessons. I have a pair of hockey skates and I know how to skate backwards but how do you do it fast? I see hockey players skate backwards soooooo fast. When some people(mostly hockey players) skate they start like they are jumping side to side it's hard to explain. HOw do you do that also? Any other tips?

Answer:
This has everything you need, how to do stuff for hockey. http://www.monkeysee.com/video/subcategory/12?subcategory=163

Question : what is the best 5 makes for ice hockey skates and figure skates?
what is more comfterble ice hockey skates or figure skates? (for a 9 year old) and what are the top 5 makes for figure and hockey?

Answer:
If you are just starting, I would have to go with figure skates. Everyone in my rink starts out in figure skates and if they want to switch to hockey skates once they are good at skating. I would have to say that it is harder to skate in hockey skates. The top five are Jackson, Riedell, Risport, Harlick, and GAM. Most people at my rink have ether Riedell, Jackson, or Risport.

Question : Where can I get my ice hockey skates baked in brooklyn?
Does any body know where I can get my ice hockey skates baked to the shape of my foot? Preferably in Brooklyn, but I guess Manhattan, or anywhere in the tri state area if needed -_-Thanks in Advance!

Answer:
Brooklyn? Look for the guys in hoodies.

Question : How long does it take to break in a brand new skate blade on new ice hockey skates?
I recently bought a new pair of ice hockey skates. I skated on them twice already. But a don't have much of a grip in my strides nor do I get that glide when stopping. My question is does it take time to break in the new blade?

Answer:
When you purchase a new pair of hockey skates, come with a blade that is not yet sharpened. The reason for this is safety as they do not want people cutting themselves when handling skates to try on at the store. No grip on your stride and lack of stopping power shows that the blade on your skate is not yet sharpened. Another way to test if your blade is sharp or not is to slide a piece of tissue paper over it. If it cuts the tissue easily, it is sharp, if not, your blade needs sharpening. With regards to breaking in, that usually refers to the boot. Most new skates tend to conform to the shape of your foot much better then models from prior to 2000. With the higher end skates, some of the more professional hockey equipment stores will have a 'skate oven' where they heat mold the skate to the exact shape of your foot to minimize the time you need to break in the skate.Cheers!

Question : what does it mean when your ice hockey skates slide to the side?
I just got a pair of my own ice hockey skates for school, you know, to show off and spray people. And every time I try to hockey stop, my skate slides and I have done the splits a lot from this. I don't think i will get back as much as I paid for them so I have to keep them. Does it mean that the skates are crappy? Or got to sharp? They're really sharp.

Answer:
if you are doing a hockey stop, your skates should slide for awhile, you are doing the splits because you aren't controlling your own weight. It sounds like you could practice skating technique, before blaming your skates?
