I want to find the value of this. It is in good condition, It has all the attachments, manual, oil can, lots of extra things I do not know use for. It was made in USA. It has a "Good Housekeeping" stamp on front of machine. Machine is heavy so I believe it is made of all metal.

The real value of anything is what someone else is willing to pay for it. Do a search on Ebay to see what other people are asking for similar items. Yes, most sewing machines are made of metal.

Try to find an outlet where you can try before you buy. I've been sewing for more years than I care to mention and most of it has been done on a very simple machine that has forward, reverse and zig zag stitch that can be used for neatening seams and making buttonholes. Nothing fancy like embroidery settings that I'm never likely to use (I'd rather do that by hand!).If you can, learn how to sew before you invest, don't be another one with 'all the gear and no idea'Good luck

Sewing machines are very basic unless you have a very old one. 1) Sitting in front of the machine-- look to the right top. There should be a spindle for the spool of thread to be placed. Turn the spindle and find out which way it UNSCREWS. Put your spool of thread on the spindle so it does not unscrew the thing while it spins.2) Take the thread in your left hand. Place your right hand to the spool on the top of the machine. Looking left ( towards the back) there should be something with a hole in it-- maybe a flat piece that has a slit and a hole... Using the slit- bring your thread from back to front thru the hole.3) Continue bringing the thread towards you-- maybe keeping your right hand on the spool so it doesn't give you too much thread. In front of the first slit and hole should be a second one-- bring the thread thru that from back to front. 4) Next and down in front is a ?? thing that sticks out towards you. ( It actually helps keep the thread snug) Look at it and you'll see a couple of metal divider sort of things. Take your thread and go under the divider and back up ( give it a tug and see if there is some resistance-- if not, take another try at it. You want that resistance)-- Then bring the thread up and you'll see a notch that you'll bring the thread behind and into it. 5) Now take the thread up to the little arm with the hole in it- turn the side wheel to make the arm come up above the machine head-- thread thru the hole from right to left. ( by now you might want more thread-- so let some spin gently off the spool)6) Take the thread down to the needle area-- look at the place where needles are inserted. You'll see a small guide beside the needle. Take the thread behind the guide and then towards you. 7) Now thread the needle. A) some needles thread front to back, some left to right. Changing needles is lesson two. Good luck

Singer no longer has the reputation it once had. I would take your budget to a sewing machine dealer. see what used models they have. A older Viking, Pfaff, Bernina or Janome is going to be much better than a new Singer. My Viking is 17 years old, sews like a dream and is better than any new Singer you could find on the market. You can demo any machine and get a lesson on how to use the machine you buy. You will have support if you need help with your machine and as time goes on, most dealers will allow you to trade up
