Question : How much should a basic bathroom remodel cost? New tile, new vanities, new toilet. No new tub. Total bill?
It's a first-floor bath with a sliding door between a toilet and the tub - there's a sink on either side of the door. I'll tear out the carpet to save time and $, but there is linoleum under that. Don't think we need a new subfloor. I'd buy the tile, the vanities and the toilet if it would offset the cost. How much should this be? I've heard a range of prices that goes from reasonable to ridiculous.

Easy to do. They do sell 60 inch tops with dual sinks. I would go with a new single 60-in cabinet with that. Two individual vanities would look like a last minute design change - no planning.It would be very difficult to hide the plumbing between the two cabinets, plus the seam between the tops.

Why do vanities often use clear light bulbs as opposed to frosted ones? Frosted light bulbs are supposed to give the illusion of giving off more light, so what is the advantage of using clear bulbs?
Answer:
Vanities can use either bulb. Frosted bulbs do not give off as much light as a clear bulb. They reduce the glare. So, if you have a lot of reflective surfaces in your bathroom, they would help soften it. Bright lights such as a clear bulb give more of a daylight feel so you can see what you are doing and basically are task lighting. So, when a woman is applying makeup, they will get a better feel for how they look during the day. With a frosted light, which is softer and muted, the makeup would end up being applied a little darker or maybe too much. In today's world, plastic liners are used in the tub area and a cloth over so general light is lost. It all depends on how your bathroom is configured, the size and the amount of general lighting. It means you can take nothing with you when you die.Every thing we do here in the flesh body is vanity. houses, cars, riches, when you die, your family son, nephew, etch inherits it, or if you are consumed by debt, it goes to probate and is used to settle your debt.We do all these things to make ourselves elevated amongst men and to boost our egos. We can take none of it with us when we die, and you can't pray from a grave.

Question : How can you raise height of exisiting vanities?
We bought a home, and the bathroom vanities are really low for us. Is there any way of raising them without replacing them? They are standard vanities, and are attached to the wall/floor, I think.
Answer:
Well one easy way would be to take out the vanities and frame up a deck (2x6 and then 5/8" inch plywood) the height of which you want the vanities raised. Then you can tile the deck (to match your bathroom tile) set the vanities back on top. The major advantage to this is it is not that intrusive and it will look like it was done from the start and not a cheap fix.

Twenty two years ago, before it was even popular like it is today, I used an antique piece of furniture, cut a hole in the top, dropped in a scalloped porcelain sink , and transformed it into a working sink/vanity in my downstairs bathroom. And, the oak furniture piece cost only $165.00. Yes, I had to retrofit the drawers so they could still be used, but the end result is well worth my efforts. The style of the furniture is curved in front with a harp on the back for hanging towels, like an old fashioned wash sink to match my victorian bath. But you can use any other style to fit your decor. I refinished the vanity with Minwax Antique Oil Rub. The oil absorbs into the wood and is waterproof. You may be tempted to finish the wood with polyurethane and although it is waterproof, it will eventually end up getting scratched and begin to lift which will result in more maintenance that you may want to dedicate to the vanity. Whereas the oil soaks into the wood, not coating the surface like the poly. And the finish is hand rubbed, leaving a wonderful patina look to the wood.May I suggest that you skip the bathroom showrooms and go directly to the flea markets, consignment shops, antique shops and the like?You may be surprised what you can find if you have the time to shop, because if you have more time than money, you are sure to find something that will work for your application. This may not be the answer you were looking for, however, please at least consider the possibilities.
