Questions & Answers
Question : What are the costs of preschool in your area?
I'm not talking about daycare, but preschool. I want my daughter to go to preschool this fall, before she starts kindergarten next year. I really think it will help her out and get her ready for kindergarten. Preschool is only a couple of hours a day, usually 2 or 3 days out of the week. Well, my husband is starting to freak out that it's just going to cost too much for her to go. I think he's being ridiculous, it's not like we're paying for college at age four!
Answer:
Preschool in our area which is called Headstart is free. The children go to school half a day, five days a week.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head_Starthttp://www.nhsa.org/Call in your area to see if there is one near you.

Question : How can I decorate my preschool classroom in a camping theme?
I teach preschool, and I have four year olds. The theme for next semester in my class is camping and the outdoors and I need ideas of ways to incorporate that into my classroom. My class is kind of small, but I need any ideas anyone has to help. I love my kids and really want to make this as fun and special or them as I can!!!
Answer:
You might want to make your reading corner out of a little pup-tent. If you put a kid size sleeping bag in the pup-tent a child can lie down while reading (and still be visible- which is always a good thing. You can also use one or two camp chairs (especially if you get the kid size ones) for them to sit in while they read.Add this to the campfire idea mentioned by another reader and you have a whole camp site.Check with your local free-cycling group (there are a lot of these groups on Yahoo Groups) for free sources for some of these items. You can also go to Goodwill, or Thrift Shops. That way you can amaze the children without breaking the bank.If you are allowed to, you can make some trees out of twisted butcher paper, (large carpet rolls are also an alternative). Then you could fasten stuffed animals like raccoons or owls in the tree's branches. You could also try to find some bulletin board sets that go with your theme to add continuity to the room. The animal friends calendar set below is one possibility. And you could post the kids names on the bears in canoes accents under a heading that reads something likeMiss _____________'s Happy CampersGood luck with the new school year!

Question : preschool_________________________________?
my child is 27 months, do you think it is time for her to go to the preschool? The preschool in my area (2 blocks from my home) accepts just children from 3 years old but there is a private one that can take her, what do you think? I don't work and I was thinking about waiting until next year when she will be more indipendent, what do you suggestanother question: she starts to love cartoons, she loves Handy Manny, for how many hours she can watch tv?
Answer:
Why do you want to send your 2 year old to preschool when you do not work? Can't you teach her her colors and numbers and read to her yourself? As for the tv watching my answer is : NONE! If she must watch tv, then 15 minutes here or there. NOT HOURS!

Question : What is the difference between preschool and prekindergarten?
Trying to find a school for my 4 year old son but have been stumped with some schools saying they have preschool and others saying they have prekindergarten.Trying to find a school for my 4 year old son but have been stumped with some schools saying they have preschool and others saying they have prekindergarten. The public school district I was looking up had several schools and each had the teahers listed with the grade they teach and some would call them preschool and another in the same district would call it pre-k.
Answer:
Preschool is a general term. Children ages 2-5 attend Preschool. A long time ago it was called "Nursery School". Children can attend Preschool for several years. The term "Pre-K" refers to the year before kindergarten. Children aged 5, and sometimes "older fours" attend this program. When they are finished, they go on to kindergarten the following Fall. Many times parents feel their children aren't quite ready for kindergarten, and so they send them to a "Pre-K" program. It gives the child a little extra time to grow and learn before beginning their school career.

Question : How to I become a preschool teacher in California?
I have my BA in Communications and have been working in South Korea as a kindergarten and elementary school teacher for 15 months. I teach English, Art, Science and Cooking. I would like to move to California and work in a preschool, what sort of certifications would I need to teach there? How long does it take to get the certifications?
Answer:
You need the minimum of 12 ECE Early Child Education units which can be obtained at any community college. It will take about a year to finish the 12 units. They are known as the "core units" that have different names depending on the college. Also there is permit that most centers in California are looking for, which you can apply for after the school, at http://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/CREDS/child-dev-permits.html. The website will give you more information on the units and level of preschool teacher you can be.

Question : What are the requirements to become a preschool teacher in FL?
Right now I'm working on a bachelors in legal studies but, I would like to teach also. So do I get a masters in education, certificate in preschool education, or associates in preschool education? BTW: I prefer the credentials for a private school but, would like to know about public and private. Thanks.
Answer:
First, finish your BA. Then, decide which level you want to teach. Educational requirements are determined by each state, so you can go online to the FL dept of education and find the info you need. If you're sure you want to teach preschool, then go visit a good one and ask them what the best path would be. The better your credentials, the higher the salary you can command.

Question : When should I start preschool for my daughter?
She is turning 4 in April and I'm wondering about preschool. She has never been in any kind of day care & hasn't been exposed to babysitting much. I'm worried about putting her in preschool, but don't want her to be behind when school starts. I also know she could use the social interaction but am afraid preschool will be too much for her since she isn't use to being away from home that much. Any thoughts/suggestions from other mothers of preschoolers? She is 3, but will turn 4 in April 2008. There seems to be some confusion.
Answer:
No worries! Many children don’t start preschool until they are three or four. It will be best for her to start in September so she will be better prepared for kindergarten socially. Social readiness is so important! She will get two full years under her belt before kindergarten. Children who have experience with school before starting kindergarten do much better than children who do not. They are better prepared to make friends, take direction from their teachers, understanding a classroom routine, join in playground activities, and have a greater respect for their classroom. You don’t need to put her in an all day program. She can start 3 days a week, no more than 3 hours a day. When she gets older you can add another day. Many Montessori schools offer this option. If you haven’t, check a few out!Make a list of several schools in your area to look at. Give the schools a call and ask any questions you may have (Hours of operation, tuition, sick policy, CPR training, school philosophy…). Ask how long the teachers have been at the program. Good schools keep their teachers. Once you have selected a few, go and observe each program without your daughter, if you can, so you can get a good feel for the program. Be a “fly on the wall” and watch how the teachers and children interact. You may want to ask the teachers a few hypothetical questions such as “What would you do if a child refused to sit at circle?” “What would you do if a child bit another child?” “What would you do if a parent brought their sick child to school?” just to get an idea if their ideas fit yours. Go with your gut!Once you have found a program you can then take your daughter for a visit. Do your best not to feel apprehensive about it or she will pick up on your feelings. You can arrange some play dates with some of her classmates before she starts to help her feel more comfortable. Between now and September, you can take her for a few more visits and drive by often. This will greatly help with the transition of separating from you and give her a little time to have something to look forward to. Relax and good luck!

Question : Do preschool teachers generally Love the children in their class?
I think it is important a child receives love throughout the day. A big reason I am worried about preschool is that his teacher won't love him, children need love and nurturing to grow. I have a week to decide if he goes to preschool, I still haven't met his teacher who will be in next week. What do I do? What do you think about preschool and love?
Answer:
I have worked in several different preschools. The best thing for you to do is to go to the preschool you are interested in and talk to the director and teachers and see what their policies are regarding the care the children receive and discipline etc... Sit in on a class and observe the children see how they are treated and reactions of the children to the teacher and teachers aides also - aides are also left alone with children for different reasons so their behavior is also important. Look for lots of positives and hugs from teachers, do they seem frustrated or happy? Children happy to be there? Look for children to adult ratio? is it enough or not enough? Daycares are very very hectic and busy. Yes I loved my kids but also getting through the day and having so many kids can seem overwhelming sometimes. So again see the teachers reactions and if they seem overworked or overwhelmed. Most teachers do go into this field for the love of children and you can tell if a teacher really cares for the children. Parent to teacher contact is vital and expect daily reports and feedback. Please realize that your child may need lots of time to get used to preschool and expect he/she to not be very happy at first. Crying is very normal and after the first few days please DO NOT stick/hang around thinking it will make it easier for the child because it does not!!! Good luck and go with your first instinct! If things don't seem right speak up! If you child is happy and happy to go to preschool then thats great!
