He can do all the big jobs that Harvey can't do, like lift derailed engines back onto the tracks. He has no engine and relies on other engines to pull him to where he is needed. Measures 10.5" long.

I want to buy my 4 year old a Thomas the Train type set for Christmas. The Thomas the Train brand seems way over priced for our budget. I have seen that Brio, Maxim and Kid Kraft make compatible sets. I really interested in one from Kid Kraft sold on Amazon.com. If you have purchased any of these brands. Which would you recommend? Which should I avoid?

We like the items from the Wooden Railway Adventures site. With the money we saved buying the Maxim tracks, we could splurge and get extra Thomas brand trains. Thomas and his buddies didn't mind that we didn't buy his fancy track. ; ) The only difference our boy noticed is that he got a lot more trains and track than he would have otherwise...http://store.woodenrailwayadventures.com/index.html The site's Kid's Corner page is fun too.

Question : Non-Thomas the Train wooden train sets...?
My son loves the Wooden Railway sets of Thomas the Train...they have wooden tracks that fit together and the trains/traincars that fit on it have magnets on each end so they "clip" together. Does anyone know of another non-namebrand set that is similar? He doesn't even know who Thomas is, so I hate to spend that kind of money if there's another alternative. TIA!

I was thinking of getting some of the Thomas stuff for my son for Christmas and he already has brio which is hard to get hold of. Do they fit together because they look exactly the same.

According to about a hundred sellers on ebay, yep, Brio is compatible with ELC, just like Tomy is compatible with Trackmaster.P.S. Check out ebay, I have found tons of hard to find Thomas things on there for my boys.

Recently picked one up for $13 at an estate sale, I honestly don't believe this woman knew what she had. Hand carved backgammon/chess set. Folds up. Very intricately made, was wondering if anyone knew approximately what it's worth? I know chess set collectors will pay top dollar for nice boards. Thanks!

Something like that is worth only what someone is willing to pay. Knowledgeable collectors look for markings that identify the maker and date of manufacture. Minus any markings, the piece will probably fall into one of two categories: Mass-produced (and it may only look hand-carved but is actually machined to look that way) or a one-off piece made by an amateur that would fall into the realm of folk art.You can start by researching any identifying marks you can see. Absent any at all, it's not likely to be of great value.
