Questions & Answers
Question : beginner model train set?
i need ideas for a 6 year old who loves trains, and he wants a model set for Christmas, but i do not know what size will be appropriate for a little kid, it also needs to be something moderately inexpensive, and something the family can build on for years. He has had train sets before we have done this with, but those are for toddlers.Nothing like the Thomas the tank engine train sets, he has out grown that. I am looking for an inexpensive, but sturdy and versatile model train set with lots of accessories like switch tracks. (he likes the trains and tracks not the buildings so much)
Answer:
You have presented a difficult situation here. You have mentioned "inexpensive" twice. That in itself is difficult to define as to what your inexpensive is. The inexpensive "train set" market especially in HO is all but gone. When they were $29.95 "all in one box" sets they were junk and did not run well. Quality costs money.Model Railroading is mostly an adult hobby now - for good or for bad. Some answering this might recommend Lionel 3 rail but I cannot. No real trains had 3 rails, at least how Lionel does it.But if you don't mind spending a bit I can direct you to a New Jersey based company that makes S Scale trains. These are compatible with the American Flyer trains of the 1950s & early 60s but are brand new. They have a lifetime warranty and run very well. You can do "weekend warrior" quickly setting up their sectional train on the living room floor for a few hours or a weekend. They just happen to be having a set sale now. http://www.showcaseline.com/index.htmlBest of all, their products are accurate models and can grow with the child if a more serious interest in MODEL RAILROADING develops.

Question : Advice needed on N gauge train track?
We are in the process of building an N gauge layout, we have followed a plan from the PECO setrack book. We have 2 ovals joined in 3 places by pairs of turnouts. My question is do we use a twin controller like the one by gaugemaster with each oval controlled by one of the controls on the controller, or can we not do that due to the turnouts? Do we use a single controller and join the 2 ovals together with wire? We also want to power all the turnouts with motors, can they run off the accessory slot of the controllers?
Answer:
Husband is dictating this:By using the duel controller both of them should be connected to each oval separately, the turnouts that are joined together should have 2 isolation plastic joiners (fish plates) thereby having control of each oval. The auxiliary outlet from the controller can be used for powering electronic solenoids as made by PECO.So the last bit is yes.

Question : Question about model train scenery?
My husband and I have a Lionel electric train going around my son's bedroom. We've been putting some scenery up around it, but there's a very small space between the track and the wall, so we're looking for building facades that can fit in a space no more than an inch or two deep. I can't seem to find just the fronts, or something small enough to fit in that space. (I've only been able to find the full buildings.) Does anyone know where I could find something like that? (I'm looking for O gage size, or close enough to work with O gage accessories.)
Answer:
My wife uses an O gauge Lionel train as part of her seasonal "Christmas" village display of miniature Victorian houses, etc., that we put up in late November each year. I have built oblong box platforms for her out of MDO (medium density overlay) or dimensional lumber, and she has hot-glued polished stones to the front vertical faces of these platforms to make them look like stone walls. We use these platforms so that we can place houses on multiple levels in the display. For your specific need (only 1 inch deep), I recommend getting a piece of wood that's maybe 1 x 1 inch in cross section and using a table saw or circular saw to cut a kerf (slot) between 1/8 and 1/4 inch along the entire length of the wood. You can put foam core board of any height into that kerf, so that the foam core board stands upright. the higher the foam core board, the heavier or more substantial the slotted wood needs to be in order to serve as a stable base (unless you can clamp the wood to something). You can then print large-size digital images of anything (building fronts, natural terrain scenery, skies with clouds onto cheap or good digital photo paper and mount the pictures on the foam core board with spray adhesive. We have used this technique in our smaller displays of Halloween or Christmas houses.

Question : Anyone else think it's silly that adults are "collecting" Thomas the Train engines which raise the prices?
Anyone else find it silly, or rather annoying that adults are "collecting" Thomas the Train engines trying to make them "collectors items" which are raising the price of the trains? My son is 2 1/2 and loves Thomas the Train. He has about 25 different trains. Some that are plastic, some that are wooden, and some that are motorized .. even some that are duplicates (a wooden and a motorized of the same character). He has a couple sets of tracks and a few other random Thomas accessories .. I've noticed that as more "collectors" purchase these trains, the more the price increases on the trains. As for me it's not really a big deal, because I know my son is going to outgrow his "Thomas" fascination and will move onto something else. But for the younger kids out there that are just now starting to enjoy Thomas, they are going to be affected by the price increase. With todays economy less parents will be able to afford the trains .. which means less children will get to play with them. These "collectors" are causing a price increase which is affecting the children who play with them .. the very CHILDREN the trains were intended for.Anyone else put off by these so-called "Collectors" of Thomas the Train engines?- мaяк's ωifee -
Answer:
Lol... I didn't even think that adults collected Thomas the Train engines...weird!

Question : What is the average cost for garden, junction, and quarry model train railways?
I have been thinking about getting three different types of model train railways: garden, junction, and quarry railways. I plan to make each one of them at least 25 X 15 feet each. I will have 5-10 trains running on each one, and they are all about $45-$120 each (the trains.) I will be buying about $650 dollars worth of scenery, buildings, tracks, and accessories for each railway. So how much would be my average for each one?
Answer:
Unless you have an inside line on all the stuff you're asking about, $650 might cover one layout. Here's some links to back up my statement:http://www.towerhobbies.com/trains/train_listings/train_set_g_scale.htmlhttp://www.modeltr ainstuff.com/category_s/332.htmhttp://www.trainsetsonly.com/page/TSO/CTGY/SETSGBACH
