Questions & Answers
Question : Do construction companies have stronger vehicles?
When it comes to sheer raw power of a vehicle and capabilities to absolutely destroy something with it's power alone, do construction (destruction) companies have more powerful vehicles than the military? Tanks are powerful, no doubt, but how do they compare with massive bulldozers, or gigantic earth moving vehicles? How about massive vehicles designed to level a 5 story building? I know there was a machine that took over 5 years to build called the Bagger 288, which weighs about 60,000 tons and dug up about 5 feet of earth per minute. (Not sure on the actual numbers, but it was close to that)

Answer:
Yes, I believe most of the world's largest/strongest vehicles are used in the construction/mining industries. The Bagger 288 which you mention is the heaviest land vehicle in the world, though it is not self-powered. It has to be supplied with electricity from external sources. The Crawler-transporter is one of the largest self-powered vehicles in the world. It is used by NASA to transport the Mobile Launch Platform, plus a space vehicle on top. Only two have been built, in 1965, and were designed for use with the Saturn V rocket (which carried the Apollo spacecraft to the moon). The same two crawler-transporters are now in use to transport the space shuttle, and NASA plan to keep them to use with the new space vehicle that will eventually replace the shuttle.Interestingly, the Bagger 288 is built by Krupp, a company that produced tanks for Germany during WWII. The largest tank ever concieved was designed by Krupp, but was never built: The Landkreuzer P1500 Monster. This tank was so huge that it wasn't even called a tank, the special designation 'Landkreuzer' means land cruiser. (As in the ship type, cruiser)The specifications called for a mass of 1500 metric tons. Later analysis has shown that this was too optimistic. If built, it would have had a weight of around 2500 metric tons. The P1500 was designed to carry the largest artillery cannon ever built, an 800 mm gun also designed by Krupp. This gun was in actual use during WWII but was instead mounted on a railway car.A smaller land cruiser, the P1000 Ratte (Rat) was designed to carry a cruiser turret with two naval artillery cannons. It was also never built.

Question : What progress has been made in terms of large ELECTRIC construction vehicles ?
I would like to know if there are REAL electric equivalents to the HGV digger and other heavy construction vehicles ??What progress has been made to find heavy 'plant' construction vehicles as an answer to the alternative energy debate - are there any REAL alternative. If so could you please show me them and my first question is that , do they run on batteries or are they plugged in the the mains electric ??I would like to know about anything from HGV, diggers (esp.), cranes, down to even road sweepers.PLEASE post any pictures or company website details about these products (even ebay if you find them !!).Warmest regArds.

Answer:
The very largest construction vehicles have been electric for some time. These are machines that tunnel through the Earth. They are electric because they produce no emissions within the tunnels where it would be deadly to workers. Electricity is either supplied from diesel generators outside of the tunnels or a direct connection to the electrical grid. Fortunately the vehicles move slowly enough that trailing a cable is not a problem. The next largest vehicles are huge earth movers. The reason that these vehicle are electric is that electric drive can have full torque from 0 RPM. An onboard diesel generator makes these vehicles series hybrids, but the system is sometimes referred to as an electric transmission. By using the electric drive an even more costly and transmission large enough to handle the torque requirements is avoided. A case could be made that an elevator is an electric vehicle. Although the "car" is moved by cables these are in turn moved by electric drive. There has been some discussion in using electric drive for the cranes used to to handle containers at shipyards. The rational here is that it is possible to recover energy from lowering a load that can then be used to raise the next load. Such regenerative systems are easier to work into an electric rather than a conventional design. These vehicles use transmitted or manufactured power. This avoids all the problems associated with battery's while taking advantage of electric drive. There are some construction yard moving equipment 18 wheeler tractors that are run on batteries but these seem to be mostly experimental.

Question : Would I be breaking NC or SC laws to have amber strobes mounted/used on my Construction vehicles.?
Would I be breaking the law to install amber strobe lights on my construction vehicles to be parked/used on public streets in North & South Carolina? If this is allowed, recommendation of where strobes are to be mounted to keep within the letter of the law would be appreciated also.

Answer:
www.dmv.org will guide you to agency that could tell you. CFR49 (Federal Regulations) also can give guidance. Some states require beacons, some strobes, some silent to type. I used to live in Seneca, SC, but i can remember type used. NC and SC nearly mirror transport regs! There is always a DOT guy in the rest areas in NC, you may want to stop and ask them!

Question : Are fire extinguishers mandatory on Commercial and construction vehicles?
Are fire extinguishers mandatory on Commercial and construction vehicles?

Answer:
Yes they are.

Question : I'm interested in operating construction vehicles?
I have no experience. I'm currently attending college full-time. I don't want to work for Pizza Hut; I want a man's job. How should I achieve this goal?

Answer:
equipment operators have a union and training programs

Question : The reverse tones in construction & public transport vehicles?
I've noticed that most of the construction vehicles and the public transportation vehicles along with a few others make a beeping tone while backing up. Does to govt. put any restrictions on permitting these on the passenger vehicles? How can one go about getting it installed in their vehicle?

Answer:
theyre availible nearly anywhere. sometimes ya can find em at walmart, or advanced auto/autozone. as for the govt stopping you, it wont, it actually encourages you to install a back up alarm, and some insurance companies will give you a small benefit of doing so. generally it will install in the plug for the back up bulb. so youll have to remove one of the light assemblies to install it, and the bulb will piggy back into the unit. set up this way when the back up lights come on, so will the alarm.

Question : where can i find a movie with just construction vehicles?... how they work, for my boy?
i found one on ON DEMAND but.. its only about 10 minutes long, and includes busses, and boats... which he doesn't like as much. I'm looking for something longer and all about bulldozers, tractors, dumptrucks.. etc...

Answer:
I would try TLC, History Channel or Discovery Channel specials. Shows like Modern Marvels on History Channel do 1/2 to 1 hour pieces on things like the world's largest earth movers, and so on.Good luck

Question : would developers see a larger profit if they didn't clear-cut subdivision plots before construction?
maybe i'm being naive, but one of the most unappealing things about new subdivisions is the lack of mature tree canopy overhead. i realize that substantial removal of trees and vegetation must occur in order for roads and utilities to be installed, and there must be sufficient room for construction vehicles and supplies to build new homes.but i would think the market for those new homes would bear higher listing prices for buyers seeking the look and feel of an 'established' neighborhood instead of an 'empty' one with no trees... trees which take 20 to 30 years to grow to a comfortable height.it has always bothered me that this practice of clear-cutting is done. shouldn't developers look at leaving mature stands of trees as an investment, if nothing else? any experiences you can share are welcome.

Answer:
In the UK there is a blanket area Tree Preservation Order that is put on mature trees when any planning application is made. The problem with this is that until it is applied the land owner, without a TPO can clear the land of any trees then apply for the planning application.Stupid practice, but it is the system. Now TPOs are very interesting and very restrictive. Hence only private land owners tend to be subjected to them. The developers, advise people to clear cut before selling so the TPO is not an issue on planning application. The grounds for which TPOs can be appealed are many some examples for your amusement below:The Council has not followed procedural requirements of the regulations. That There is no Known Threat of Risk To Trees:The trees are must be good examples of their type, or of a particularly good form. Their normal life expectancy will be restricted The trees may be unsafe and may be at risk of collapse into neighbouring properties. These trees are near the boundaries of neighbouring properties. An actionable nuisance. Trees do not represent an important visual feature The mere fact that a tree is publicly visible from a public space or road is not itself sufficient to warrant a TPO. Trees particular importance by reference to size and form, its potential as an amenity, special factors such as rarity, value as screen or contribution to the character or appearance of a conservation area. Any TPO is only justified in these instances in exceptional circumstances.Access to light. Local surroundings should only be assessed by also taking into account how SUITABLE they are to their particular setting as well as the presence of other trees in the vicinity. These trees are not veteran trees. They do not have identifiable, commemorative or habitat importance. Have no importance for cohesion as they are an isolated block This is only a tiny few of the reasons you can appeal. So why are most places clear cut in UK. Developers know the law and do not want to get involved in restrictive TPO so they clear cut. The law is an ASS.

Question : Do you really have to stay back 500 ft from a Firetruck/ other construction vehicles while driving?
I can understand staying back far enough so that the driver can see you in his/her mirrors, but 500 feet? we're talkin 1 and 2/3 Football fields...that's a little ridiculous, what would you do when stopped at a traffic light behind one of these trucks?,..I want to know what the general public thinks of this. Thanks Guys

Answer:
The distance varies by locale, but that doesn't mean stay 500' back ALL THE TIME. That's for safety when the unit is on an emergency call. You do not want to be drafting a ambulance/firetruck and then have to dodge equipment, debris and God knows what else in the event something happens, or the unit in question arrives at the scene and pulls up short - with you in it's area of operation. As far as construction vehicles go, it's a very good idea to give them a wide berth. Even though they have those tarps on to cover the payload, sometimes a good bump will send rocks, asphalt or whatever right over the dump bed onto whatever is following or riding alongside.Once, on the Maj. Deegan Expy in the Bronx, in a new car I'd only had for 4 months, I was about 2 seconds behind a DOT road truck hauling salt/sand mix (he wasn't laying it down). He hit a bump and a rock that looked the size of a baseball was headed for my windshield - it was actually about the circumfurence of a nickel, but when you're seeing coming at you <:-O. I'll just say this, if not for the invention of safety glass, I'd have caught that one straight in the kisser.

Question : What organization is transporting used, large items and vehicles?
I've seen them on every interstate, usually a damaged used vehicle towing a damaged used vehicle. The "permit" is sometimes issued from Rhode Island. Sometimes it's a bus, box truck, or construction vehicle filled with household goods. They always seem to be heading south.
