Questions & Answers
Question : is my amp dead?
so.. i have no sound. the headunit seems to be doing its thing but when i look at both my amps they have no lights. i checked the in-line fuse and it seems fine.. isnt popped or anything. i even took the amp out and checked inside (no burnt smell). i also looked for an onboard fuse on the amp but couldnt find any when i opened it. it's a jl audio (250/1 and 300/4). i'm assuming it just doesnt have a built in fuse. i just want to know where i should go from here.. should i just take them to circuit city to test and see if they are blown for $20 each?so i got a multimeter. i tested for dc and the line moved a little on the analog meter. i did this by touching the black probe to ground and red to power. (i'm just writing this to make sure i'm using it correctly). as for the reading.. not sure if this number is right but 25 (DCma?) any ideas?ok upon the previous advice:i set the meter to 50 dcv. i touched the red to power and black probe to ground and got barely any movement. i then proceeded to play around with the probes to see if i could get any darn reading. when i touched the black to ground and red to remote i got above the 50-10-2 reading. did i learn anything about the amp yet?
Answer:
You should have the meter selector switch set on the 50 volt DC scale. Needle should move above the division marked 50-10-2.Some multimeters may have different scales. Ode of my low cost meters has a 15, 150, 1000 DC scale. Whatever the case, on the 15 volt scale, full deflection to the right would be 15 volts. You'll be looking for around 12 volts on both the battery wire and the remote wire with the amp turned on.Edit:Yes, you learned that the remote line to the amp is OK, but that the main power line is not. The problem should be an inline fuse or a bad connection to the battery.

Question : How do I connect my speakers and laptop to my amp?
In short, I have got:-Cambridge Audio Model A1 Seperate Stereo Intergrated Amplifier3m heavy duty loudspeaker wireStereo 3.5mm Jack to Twin Phono LeadI will buy my speakers soon but first I would like to know how i would connect the speakers to my amp with the 3m heavy duty wire and the 3.5mm phono lead. I read on the internet I have to strip the wires and well confusing stuff. Could someone please post a link to a simple guide or write a simple guide on here for me? I'm not really much of a technical guy. Thanks.
Answer:
The 3.5mm plugs into you pc audio out the 2 phono to an input ie aux on the amp. You need strip the wires back on the spkr cable then attach to the spkr to the amp, some wrap round a binding post some just push in it obvious when you look at it.The amps spkr terminals are colored red and black this will be the case on the spkrs themselves. You must make sure that the red connects to red & black to black else you will be out of phase, there is a stripe(or ridge) on the cable to make sure you know which wire is which

Question : Which extension cord should I buy for a 13 amp electric snow blower?
I just bought a new electric snow blower and need to buy an outdoor extension cord. The snow blower says it has a 13-amp motor and I will probably need an outdoor cord that is about 100 feet. I'm confused on the type that is best for this motor as I see some listed with a gauge number and some with an amp number. Do I have to buy one that says it is for 13 amp only or does that make a difference for this motor? Also for the gauge number, I see numbers from 16 down to 10 gauge. What should I buy? I don't want to get the wrong one and burn up the motor on the first try. I saw one review that someone wrote on this snow blower and he said he had a 12 gauge cord and bought a 10 gauge instead and got a little more power from the lower number. Then I read another review and it said that if you are buying 25, 50 or 100 feet to use a 16 gauge. I thought the hardest part was over when I finally picked the snow blower that is best for me to handle and now it is more confusing to pick out an extension cord. Any help on clearing the confusion would be greatly appreciated.
Answer:
The lower the gauge number the more juice it can carry. Buy Yellow Jacket brand cords. They are high quality and stay flexible even when cold. They are expensive. Amazon had the 10/3 100ft cord for $109. They 12/3 is $58You don't want anything smaller than 12. The 12 is rated for 15 amps. The 10 is rated for 20 amps.http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BQM06U/ref=asc_df_B000BQM06U962057?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=googleco m09c9-20&linkCode=asn&creative=380341&creativeASIN=B000BQM06U

Question : Is this a good 'beginners' gaming PC?
Well okay my budget is AU$3000 and yes this is the first time I'm getting such a beastly computer. I'm getting it for my birthday and I'm gonna be using it for University === Gaming XD. So yea. But I have a question whether I should get the Core i7 970 or save a bit of money and go for the 960. Any thoughts? Impressed? Can it run Crysis 2? MW2? Black Ops? Compatibility Issues? Put your comments down below and it could be.... on next weeks show... Nah it could be the best answer.>>>UPDATE<<< [17/4/11] [6:48 PM]Good points but I still don't think that the 1366 socket is dead. And yea I might cut back down on stuff. I will soon upgrade to the 980X. But for gaming the 9**X Series will still dominate.>>>UPDATE<<< [17/4/11] [7:23 PM]Hi Brennan I completely agree with what you said. Yes I do avoid Asus and I prefer EVGA, for the video card - I actually plan to upgrade and get a second in a few months and put it in SLI, I probably will scrap the Velociraptor series and get an SSD, just like you I know I will burn Blu-rays in the future, and yes I understand that Corsair make good power supplies - however I tried to avoid that and stick with a 'Thermaltake' system with all 'Thermaltake' parts - well most...As for Jack, yes I know that the 1155 socket has almost replaced 1366; well it has... But it's a matter of personal preference. I'm an enthusiast and well, I know that sometime I will upgrade my motherboard and CPU when I need too. Video rendering, yes... I will do that. The RAM... Well just because I can. But yea those are my reasons. With all those spare parts I will have after upgrading, they will just go to my other PCs.Vomit. Yes I'm considering your points and I will even
Answer:
1. The I7 series of processors doesn't lend itself to a pure gaming environment although they do game quite well. I have an I7 950 myself and am completely happy with it. And the I7 1366 platform is cheaper even with triple channel ram then the I7 2600k right now IF you get a 950 or a 960 processor and an Asus Saber-tooth board. That being said if gaming is all that matters to you get an I72600k processor and be done with it.2. I generally stay away from motherboard manufacturers not named Asus this has nothing to do with the quality of other motherboard manufacturers products but more to do with personal preference and experience with Asus's customer support system across countless computer builds and tech support calls due to customer negligence. They are the least painful to deal with.3. RAM is basically personal preference I generally use Kingston, Corsair has in the past suffered some reliability issues but they have seemed to address these so be aware of that.4. As for your video card choice you can go with the 580 or for the same money you can pair: 2X 6870's in Crossfire, 2X GTX 560's in SLI, 2X 6950's in Crossfire, and all of these pairings will beat a single GTX 580.5. If your serious about gaming and your already willing to spend that much on a processor I would get a Solid State drive, they are not that pricey. Hell sacrifice the processor which matters less and get a SSD.6. Optical drives are your choice I put a Blu-Ray Burner in my own PC just cause I know sometime down the road I will likely burn Blu-Ray's.7. Get a Corsair, Enermax, Silverstone, or Antec. Corsair gets the award right now for producing the best powersupply, but I can say that Enermax and Silverstone both produce a quality product as well, and Antec is a good middle of the pack. Get something that is at least rated 80+ silver.*Edit*The 1366 socket is far from dead in fact X68 is going to be coming out very soon which will breathe new life into the 1366 socket, and most of the hardware associated with 1366 will carry directly over to intels new socket. If anything 1155 is the dieing socket because they have done everything they can with it at this point and it is at the end of its life as far as innovation goes. 1366 suffered from the problem of being too revolutionary and too expensive for its time so it was ignored by the majority of users who migrated to other socket types. Finally I encourage you to scrap that line of thinking when it comes to your computer you sound like your going to be hooking up alot of expensive hardware up to your PC a second 580X and maybe a 9__X processor down the road? I would rather see that expensive hardware in the safe hands of an Enermax, or Corsair or even Silverstone powersupply, where they guarantee that if your system shorts out due to a powersurge while connected to their powersupply they will replace it all. Why would you take that sort of risk especially on something that you wont even see?

Question : Fender Squier Strat + amp or Jackson Dinky JS32R w/ Licensed Floyd Rose?
Like the question says. I can't really decide. I've been playing a classical guitar for over half a year now and I want to move onto an electric. I've read tons of stuff, reviews and shizz about the Jackson Dinky and it overall gets good reviews. Video reviews here and there say it's an awesome beginner guitar, plus they also say that the tremolo setup with them bolts @ the head enables the guitar to stay in tune after whammy abuse and that's what I want. I've always wanted to play a guitar with a tremolo and abuse it to all hell and have it stay in tune as much as possible. With that said, the Squier deal is a lot cheaper as it includes a SP-10 amp but the tremolo isn't a Floyd and it's not got the fancy tuning stuff but I can start playing immediately. So what I wanna know is the following of a couple of things:I'm a Metallica fan, first off. I also like playing anime songs (I know it sounds silly on a classical guitar, playing songs that should be played with distortion but still), so that means really happy sounding tunes, really sad sounding tunes. The Metallica songs I like playing are the ballad ones and the general melodic ones like Nothing Else Matters, The Day That Never Comes, Fade To Black, Turn The Page, The Unforgivens and the little more heavier ones like Enter Sandman, Seek and Destroy, Sanitarium etc.I also like playing Michael Jackson songs, Red Hot Chili Peppers etc. Nothing that really has very heavy chords. I'm more of a lead guitar person so I like more picking. With that said, which guitar would be better suited for this? You see, I'm biased towards the Jackson really due to the tremolo mainly. I don't know much about the Squier (I don't know much about electrics either) but I've heard there are some guitars that are used to play heavy stuff and then there are guitars used to play light stuff. I prefer light stuff, soloing, riffs, rock, blues etc.Which guitar should I go for? I'm not that desperate (or am I?) to go for the Squier if the Jackson would be better. Currently I can buy the Squier + the amp at a very reasonable price (for me at least, and for where I live) That would be 225ish euro. The Jackson on the other hand is 315ish euro but doesn't come with an amp.I'm inclined - again, as I said above - to go for the Jackson if it would be better for what I wanna do (no gigging, home playing). If I am to go for the Jackson, however, I'll need some more money to buy an amp as well. My birthday is coming up in half a month so I'll get more money then. Question is: If Squier, then why? If Jackson, then why? + a suggestion of a good and affordable amp. I want a GOOD amp, when I say affordable I don't mean sodding 50 euro, I'm ready to pay 2 or 3 times that if I get a good amp for that money.I know I'm a beginner but I also like quality. If the quality is good, I'll pay the extra money and not have to bother with it for a while. So yeah -> If Squier, then why? If Jackson, then why? + a suggestion of a good and affordable amp. Please, no trolls, I want serious answers. 10 points will be given to the most well written and explained post. Also, I know some people hate Jacksons but think for a bit, I'm a beginner, I don't think I'll be able to make out whether the Jackson is shit or this Gibson Les Paul is great =) They would all sound almost identical to me. CHEERS!
Answer:
IMO, since you want to play multiple things, I say skip the Jackson and get this guitar instead:http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/esp-ltd-mh-103-quilted-maple-electric-guitar/51487200 0012000ESP-LTD MH-103It has features of both the Jackson (Humbucker and Floyd rose) and features of the Squier (single coil neck and middle). You can get that high-gain sound for Metallica, and lower output stuff for Michael Jackson, perfect for RHCP, and blusier stuff. In fact, the bridge pickup isn't really an extremely high-output pickup, so it'll sound pretty good for low-gain stuff, but still has enough gain for metal stuff. As for an amp, I'd say look for a Fender Mustang II 30W combo. I recommend it because its a modeling amp, wich can do a bunch of different amp models (clean amps, low gain, and high gain amps) and different effects. Its a somewhat new amp, but it gets really good reviews. The guitar:http://www.thomann.de/gb/esp_ltd_mh_103qm_stb.htmThe amp:http://www.thomann.de/gb/fender_mustang_ii.htm

Question : what is better a acoustic or electric guitar?
So I have never played a guitar or even know how to read notes, and all I do is write my own music. I just want to add some tune to it. But which is better for a begginer who is starting classes soon, acoustic or electric? And can you even use an electric without an amp? What different sounds do they make? Anyone who could help that would be awesomee haha obviouslyy I know nothing about it. But I do want to start a career in music?
Answer:
Hello there,There is no absolute best choice. Some folks argue you should learn on an acoustic because it is more forgiving and less complicated (no controls, amp or effects do deal with). Others argue you should start with an electric because it is easier to play. I take the pragmatic approach. Go with which ever you may to play the most. Why tie up money in an acoustic if you really want to play the electric. Why bother getting an amp and effects pedals, if your are more interested in the acoustic. You can learn on either the electric or the acoustic equally well and equally easy. So go with whichever interests you most.Yes you can play an electric guitar without the amp. There is not a lot of volume, but you can hear it. However, without the amp, you loose the benefits the electric guitar has to offer and it becomes a poor, weak sounding acoustic. If you don't plan to use an amp, go with the acoustic. If you want to play the electric guitar, get a decent amp. Not some small practice amp. Those have lousy speakers and make you sound thin and tinny no matter what brand. Most beginners underestimate the importance of the amp and speakers in the quality of your sound.I keep an electric guitar next to my bed. Nearly every night I play for a while to relax before I can go to sleep. Although I do have an amp in the bedroom, I almost never use it. In the quiet of the night, I hear the electric guitar just fine without an amp. And since I am playing to relax, I don't really need any volume. Of course, I have several amps and speaker cabs in the other room I use during the day when I play. But I find playing guitar to be about as relaxing as anything. I don't have to think. I can just sit there on the bed and play whatever my fingers feel like doing.Later,

Question : Bass Guitar is not working through the amp.?
I have a Fender Squire 4-string Bass Guitar. The amp works, I also have another amp that I tried, and a recorder... At first I would get nothing at all, except a buzz. To find out that the white wire came off, I soldered it back, tried it again. Still buzzing, except now, If I point it down, and only in a specific position will it barely come through for a second. So it's still not working. I have considered taking it in, but first, I want to know if maybe it is something that I can do myself instead of paying somebody else to do it for me.I don't want any links, or anything other than a simple, ANSWER! or suggestion for what it could be. It's a waste of your time, and mine to type/write something telling me to take it in. I know a couple other things that are a little weird with the bass, maybe one of them have something to do with it..The white piece at the top of the neck, is cracked between the D & B string. (I think thats the names.)It's not tuned... mostly because it's being read by anything.and the strings have Never been changed. I've had the same strings for years. (Don't tell me I'm stupid for not changing the strings. I know I need new ones.. but first I need to fix the bass, otherwise... What's the point?)
Answer:
get a new patch chord. or check your plug in thingy on your bass. (were you plug the chord into) It's probably fucked inside of thier. good luck bro

Question : How can I get my microphone to work?
Ok, so I LOVE to sing and write my own songs on my guitar, it's my LIFE. But that's not the point hahahah. I got a REALLY good professional microphone for Christmas along with a stand. But the problem is, I have no amp to hook my microphone in to get it to work, do any of you no any ways to get it to work, and I don't have a karaoke machine. :S Please help. Thank you for taking your time to read this. (:
Answer:
the only other way to use the mic without an amp is to plug into your computer. Go to radioshack or any electronics place and ask them for an XLR to Quarter inch adapter. This will let you plug in your microphone to your computer and use whatever sound programs you have on it. Also you might want to check out some free recording software. I use Mixcraft, just google it and you can get a free download from their website. You can even use your mic to record your guitar and make your own songs, granted it wont be the best quality, but you can still use it :D have fun!
