Questions & Answers
Question : Buying guitar for a beginner, is this equipment appropriate?
Is this guitar equipment ok for a beginner? And what might one pay for the guitar alone, second hand?My boyfriend has been wanting to learn to play, but keeps having financial stuff come up when he is ready to buy. I found this equipment for sale at what seems to be a decent price, but I don't really know if it is appropriate for a beginner. I'm hoping to surprise him. Also, what do I need to buy so that he can practice wearing headphones?...he lives in an apartment and doesn't want to bother the neighbors.Electric Guitar - Ibanez S470 color deep purple 2 dbl, 1 single,Floyd rose tremlo, Jumbo fret, Perfect condition Hard Shell case.Amp: Crate GFX212T, 2 12" speakers, built in tuner, FX options,2 channel distortion switches, 1 channel clean switch included. Answer:
Hi Linda. While that Ibanez guitar has been out of production for a while, it is still a great guitar. Ive found 4 stores here in Michigan selling them, and the price range is 275 on the low side, all the way up to 425 on the high side. The one at 425 was in excellent shape, 275 was pretty dinged and scratched, and there were 2 more going for 350 that looked like they were in decent shape. All these guitars except the one selling for 275 came with a hardshell case. Ive seen the amp going anywhere from 149 all the way up to 200, and that one was in near perfect shape. Those are nice amps by the way, and it should last him a long time. And yes... this is very good equipment for a beginner. The necks on these guitars are very easy to play, and it is a very good quality guitar. As far as silent practice goes... your already giving him one heck of a gift.. so.. this is something that would not run an arm and a leg, and comes loaded with a ton of FX as well. Just click on the link ive provided, and it should help you out some. http://www.zzounds.com/item--BEHVAMP2 Hope this has helped ya out.. and.. My birthday is just right around the corner if your looking to buy more music gear for someone!!! lol...

Question : I Just Inherited 30+ guitars?
My brother has been collecting guitars since the 80's and he recently passed away and left them all to me (including amps, thousands of strings, straps, picks, foot pedals etc). I have NO interest in them but can't get rid of them yet for sentimental reasons. He and his wife lived in a very large house and he had a room dedicated to his guitars. While I certainly appreciate her generosity by inisting on me taking them, I have NO ROOM for 26 guitars, 7 amplifiers and tons of gadgets. She's a great woman and he left her very finanically fit so it's not like she needed to sell them for cash but I don't know what to do with them as I know nothing about guitars and have no interest in playing them. How can I learn their values? I'm going to list a few that I know and anything you can tell me about value etc. would be greatly appreciated. I do know he bought several many years ago that were not expensive so I may just be receiving a bunch of junk but again, I have no clue.1. Harmony accoustic - I know this is very cheap2. Answer:
Actually, your best bet is to find similar guitars on Ebay and see how much they sell for after being bid on. Im not going to check everything out, but I will tell you the common street value for some of the guitars (used). However, for some of the guitars it will definitely depend on the condition, how much is original, and the year of manufacture.1) Harmony - depends on model and year.2) around $2003) Totally depends on if its standard, custom, special, etc.4) Squiers sell for around $100 each5) Around $100... $150 if its electric acoustic and maybe pushing $200 if its cutaway.6) IDK7) MIM strats are worth around $250-$350.8) US Strats are worth far more. This will be dependant on if they are in good condition, original, and what year they are from. There are collectable.9) Another collectable guitar. Depends on the year and condition. However, there were clones put out (by Hofner). You would need to inspect it to see if its original, old, etc.10) BC Rich wasn't known for their acoustics. I'd guess between $100-$400 for that brand. Its not a desirable or collectable brand, but they still sell.11) There is no 1112) This can fluctuate from $500 to $5000 or even more. Refer back to #8... same rules apply.13) $100 on a good day.14) $15015) refer back to question 8.16) Kramer put out a lot of different guitars. Of each model they put out different series. However, like BC Rich, Kramers were not considered collectables or superior guitars. Depending on the line, this guitar may be worth $100 or $500.17) $25018) $12519) Capos sell for around $3 on ebay, or around $25 in the store. However, there is not much of a market for used capos. Figure around $5 each.Zakk Wylde Epiphone - Around $300Marshall Mini stacks - around $40Marshall stack... depends on the model, year and series. Vintage Marshalls are worth thousands. Solid state Marshalls can be worth around $150. The Marshall cabinets are worth around $400 each used though. The Line 6 amp is like getting a computer... the older ones are already old technology. However, some of their high end amps, even the old ones sell for a lot. They have a few lines, tube amps, Spider series, heads, combos, etc. Look up the model and series to see what it sells for or sold for and figure its worth around 1/2.

Question : Guitar Rig Question - What guitar amp do I need ?
I wanted some input on what an ideal guitar rig would be for small club like venues. I have an Ibanez RG321ex, which is has very metal / hard rock leanings. I also have a Korg Ax3000g which is a modelling unit. Now I bought a starnger amp, coz I figured I do not want to colour my sound beyond the processor unit. But Im not very pleased with the tones I get. My question is - Having spent all that I have on a reasonable modeling unit, would I still need to invest in a Marshall or Vox amp. Would that make my processor redundant ? I know these amps come with their own tone effects, but would shaping the signal through processor + amp tone be an overkill. I want simple warm tones with good sustain and not much else. Please advise.

Answer:
I have a similar philosophy about guitar effects. After listening to every guitar effect I could find, I finally settled on the BOSS GT-10. I also have a Roland Juno-G keyboard synthesizer that I can plug my guitar into and use like an effects processor for the guitar. I was happy with everything except when it comes to turning out the really dark metal overdrives and distortions. For that, I recently purchased an ENGL E530 preamplifier. The only effects, the ENGL has is crunch and distortion using the gain knob on either the clean or lead channel. So, in effect, it simply adds to my distortion or provides a very nice clean reproduction of the BOSS GT-10 effects. I use this setup primarily to record with which works just great. For playing live however, I needed a pristine reproduction of what I already had so, I selected twin JBL JRX115 2-way speaker cabinets. I have always loved the sound from a JBL speaker. To drive those speakers, JBL recommends a 500 watts per channel stereo power amplifier. The QSC GX5 was just perfect for that purpose. Now, I realize that you are not looking to play in a stadium or even a large auditorium but, I rarely turn up my QSC even 20% of it's capacity so I have the capability if I need it but, I also have the this incredible clear reproduction of whatever guitar effects I want to turn the volume up on for a live performance. So yes, you probably need an amplifier of some kind (for going live) except in the studio for recording in which case your current set up should suffice. If you don't like your sound with just the guitar and Korg playing through a set of studio quality headphones, then the problem is in your guitar and the Korg. You can get mellow out of your Ibanez by turning the tone controls to a more bass sounding tone. I have a Hagstrom Swede. I specifically selected the Swede because of it''s unique dual toggle switch configuration that allows me to go from harsh metal tones to smooth mellow jazz or blues tones at the flick of a switch. As a songwriter, I needed that wide variety of tone possibilities. That is also why I selected the BOSS GT-10. You might try playing a different guitar through your Korg. I'm not familiar with the Korg AX300g but, after looking at the write-ups, reviews and specs, it looks like a pretty interesting effects processor. Since it does amp modeling, you perhaps just need to find and adjust the correct amp model to give you that mellow tone you want. I would say you should spend a day or several days really getting to know that effects processor. It will likely take me a few years to learn everything there is to know about my Roland Juno-G and my BOSS GT-10. For small performances, you might consider getting a Roland AC-60, JC-120, KC-550, or KC-880 amplifier. The Roland amps have exceptional sound quality and had I not been sold on the JBL speakers, I would have probably ended up with a Roland amp.

Answer:
You speak of the Typhoon truck or a custom build? A good typhoon in reasonable shape is worth about $3800 if fully dependable. They are so breakable and any occupants are at wrisk. Redefine what you possess for an accurate accounting!

Question : rca picture distored.convergence problem.why so many power supply problems with rca projection tv?
rca projection tv model p60923 chassis ptk195kc had no power, found blown 5 amp 125v main fuse, replace fuse and had power to tv but the picture is distorted screen is red in color and top and bottom screen is concave in shape.

Answer:
If your MAIN 5 amp fuse got blown, and you replaced it AND IT WORKED (started up and ran) --- You got WHACKED by a power surge !!It could have been lightning...it could have been a drunk hitting a power pole....but you got whacked. And your convergence circuits didn't like that, not at all......Right now I can only suggest you get an RCA servicer out to your home....it's not something a general layman can fix.....Heck, I'm a TV tech, and I wouldn't even attempt to fix it in the home. I'd take it to the shop with a $400 to $500 estimate. There is just so much work ahead to get it fixed.....

Question : Which is a better bass and a better deal? And a Good Bass Amp?
On a Budget, I need a good amp too. Suggestions? The first is a Dean Edge, the least expensive and the reviews seem to be good for a beginner bass. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Dean-Edge-09-4-String-Electric-Bass-Guitar-519941-i1150840.gcThe second is a Dean Edge as well, I love how the color goes all the way up the neck, but not the shape, plus $60 more. The bright colors are a plus but I'm still leaning towards the more simplier classic black. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Dean-Custom-Zone-4-String-Bass-Guitar-512934-i1172581.gcThird is a Ibanez just as and extra, there aren't any reviews, but it is supposed to be smaller. I'm not that small but going against how most bass players are bigger. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ibanez-GSRM20-Mikro-Short-Scale-Bass-Guitar-516148-i1324105.gcLastly a Yamaha, A great brand name for instruments. Good reviews but it says the Jack Covers sucks but that's a small fix. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Yamaha-RBX170-Bass-101834489-i1146652.I also need a good amp to go with (Didn't have space) But guitar amps aren't gonna work on a base and I need a good decently priced one. I'm on a budget as stated and it's basicly going to be a christmas present from my parents. I know they don't want to spend alot but they probably will if they know if it'll be better in the long run and is a good quality. They're probably not wanting to spend more that 200 or at most 250 all together...which sucks, including a bass, amp, strap and a few other urgent neccesities that aren't waitable.

Answer:
Because all guitars feel and play differently, and because it's very important for a beginner to find a comfortable guitar for them. I would suggest you set yourself a price range, and go to your local music store to try a few out. The guys at the store will be more than happy to let you try them, and even make some suggestions if you explain your situation.I would reccomend Peavey or Ibanez. I play bass, and I have tried many guitars by both of these companies. They are very well built, and even the lower end/starter models have a great sound to them. The action's have always been very easy to adjust too, which I think is an important feature. As I said though, you really need to try a few out to know what's right for you. As for the amp, if it's an amp for volume and soud quality, I'd go for an Ashdown or Laney amp. I love both these companies, and you can get yourself a pretty powerful combo for a decent price. If it's just a practise amp your looking for, I'd try the Roland Cube. They're pretty new on the market, and they have effects built into them. They're small, but still have quite a bit of volume to them. Perfect for the money. As with the basses though, I'd try a couple of amps out at a local store. Good luck, hope you find what your looking for.

Question : What is a good second guitar?
I feel that it's time for an upgrade. My first guitar is a Squier Affinity Series HSS Strat. I love the way it feels-The weight is almost perfect, the body shape is wonderful, the neck is perfect thickness (I prefer thin necks), the neck doesn't play perfectly, but I do like the feel of it. I absolutely love practicing with my Squier unplugged, but when I plug it into my amp, it sounds like crap. I can adjust the knobs to get a good sound for single notes, but that makes chords sound horrible, and vise-versa. What do you think is a good second guitar? It should be under $1000. I really like the feel of Stratocasters and most other Fender products. I've played a $550 Epiphone Les Paul and hated the feel of it. No Les Pauls. I played an Epiphone G-400, though, and it was great. The only thing that I didn't like about it was the fact that the bridge is hardtail. I'm not a fan of PRS. I think they are good quality, but I don't prefer the sound. I'm considering the following as second guitars, let me know what you think.Fender Standard Stratocaster (white, rosewood)Fender Highway One Stratocaster (don't like the Hwy1 colors, though)Fender Standard Stratocaster HSS FR (white, rosewood)Fender Classic Player Jaguar HHGibson SG ClassicEpiphone G-1275Brian May Signature Series Squier Classic Vibe 60's StratSchecter C-1 Classic (can I get a classic rock tone out of this?)My favorite band by far is Rush. I mainly play their music, but would also play some Led Zeppelin and a little bit of Van Halen. I'm completely obsessed with Rush, though. Sorry about the ridiculously long question, please give as much info as you can. Thanks

Answer:
You do realize that virtually every guitar you named is better than the squire? So once you get a new guitar your squire will be demoted to guitar #2. I too am a big rush fan (checkout my video link to see some of my original music, Road to the Future is very Rush-like!) I really like the Ibanez S series guitars because they have a very thin and fast neck with a great feeling body. I prefer Seymour Duncan JB pickups because they have a wonderful tone and harmonic content. If your squire's sound is not up to snuff try a JB in the bridge position. You can get a classic tone from virtually any guitar, it depends on your amp settings more than anything else. Since you are already very used to the fender then you will most likely want to stick with them. Give some Ibanez and even some ESP guitars a try. The Brian may that I played had a somewhat fat neck that I was not impressed with. You know that a real Gibson Les Paul feels much better than an Epiphone and that each one has a different feel so you need to play a few before you decide you don't like them. This is the same for almost any brand of guitar, you can pick up two of the exact same model and they will feel quite different. Likewise, you can play two completely different brands and models and find that they have a very similar feel and tone. The bottom line is play a lot of guitars and decide which one is right for you. Yours is the only opinion that matters.

Answer:
Alright choices of stuff but I'd get a better amplifier. Most Hifonics amplifiers are overrated by a few hundred watts. That 1608 is probably going to give out 1200-1400 watts rms. So you could go for the Hifonics BXi2008 instead which should give out at least probably 1700 watts rms if you're lucky. Now remember to BEEF UP YOUR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. That capacitor you're getting won't help much especially if you're running a stock alternator and battery. Best thing to do is to get a better battery such as a Kinetik HC1400, Yellowtop, etc..also, that amplifier wiring kit you chose doesn't actually have real 4 gauge wire in it. Many brands lie so I'd go for the $59.99 StreetWires 4gauge kit from Sonic Electronix (I'm guessing you picked these products from there too).

Question : help picking a guitar and amp?
alright so iv been playing on an ibanez gio and a peavey blazer 158 15w crappy practice amp for a year now, and iv gotten quite good, so i was thinking and entire gear upgradethe amp i seem to have chosen already, the Line 6 Spider III 75W combo amp, along with an FBV Express footswitch and a Dunlop Crybaby From Hell wah pedalnow im having trouble picking the guitar - i have a choice of the ESP LTD ec-500, since tremolo's are headaches and the spider III has a built-in tremolo effector the B.C. Rich WMD Warbeast, who has an OFR and rockfield pups for just 50 bucks more, but imo the color is too sombre - i would prefer a white ec-500so in the longrun, will not having a tremolo be a regret, or if you have any other guitars in mind please name themthank you!p.s i have taken a bnreak from superstrat shapes, i want weird shapes or lp shapes onlywell fenders arent generally suited to metal =)

Answer:
B.C. Rich makes a pretty good import guitar (much more reasonably priced than an ESP/LTD) and Jackson imports are very good as well. You can get a Jackson V or a Kelly model starting at around $500 and it will sound great. And you might want to check on the Line6 amp because I believe that it has a built in Wha feature and you can use it with the floorboard (FYI). Good luck and keep on playing!
