Question : Does dry wood furniture need to be treated before staining?
I'm getting ready to finish an old outdoor glider/bench. The wood is VERY dry. Should I rub this down with some kind of furniture oil before trying to stain it? The wood is so dry it is starting to crack a little in some places, and the surfaces are kind of textured.

Question : VERY tricky and unusual situation with a friend? Desperately need advice on what I can say?
I have a very good friend who is extremely overweight. I think it is over 350 pounds (just to give you an idea). She is an absolutely lovely lady, and a very good friend, and my children are friends with hers, etc.My only problem is that over the time I've known her, she has broken various items of my furniture, dining chairs, recliner armchair, outdoor seating benches, and also the passenger seat of my car twice.I can't exactly tell her to stop visiting, or put her off, as she would guess there was a reason, does anybody have ANY suggestions on what I can do to stop having to replace things all the time? All suggestions are welcome, but serious answers only please.Also, just wanted to add, that as a friend I have thought of encouraging her to undertake a healthier lifestyle (ie, weight loss), but she is perfectly happy with herself (as she should be), so that wouldn't be a good idea. What a difficult problem! This actually happened with my Dad many years ago, at a time he was quite overweight. My sister and her hubby had just bought a new dining setting and Dad sat in one of the chairs and it just collapsed under his weight.We all teased him a little (not too much because fat people have feelings too!), but what my sis did was go and buy one very good strong plastic chair and whenever Dad came to visit, that is where he was seated. She put a cushion on it etc, and told him that for his own comfort and safety, that was the chair he was to use. She bought it from a commercial supplier of outdoor furniture, so it was really tough and after that they never had any problems. As it was plastic and therefore lightweight, Dad would simply move the chair from room to room wherever he went, and bring it to the tv room, the dining table, wherever.True, it did not match her other furniture, but when guests (not Dad) were there, she could simply put it outside, as it would not matter if it got wet, etc.As far as your car goes, Dad had to have a special seat installed in his car to carry his weight. It was very expensive, so maybe you should just use her car or a taxi if you go anywhere?Best wishes and good luck, your friend is fortunate to have a thoughtful friend such as you :-)

Question : Should I start making cedar yard furniture to sale.?
I was thinking I have all the tools to start making cedar outdoor furniture like adirondack chairs, benches, love-seats, end tables, planter boxes, and gardening workstation tables. Does anyone think that these items would sale if I started advertising locally and bringing my products to farmers markets to start with and will this type of product sale in the winter time or mostly in the summer when outdoor living in. I live in northern California so the winters arn't all that bad.

cedar is a natural insect repellent and is usually expensive to purchase so maybe, they would sell but maybe incorporate some cheaper wood products of equal quality...good luck

There is a Fluffo mattress Company somewhere east of Knoxville. Jefferson City, Newport, Morristown. Somewhere in that general area. They probably turn mattress trade-ins into something "recycled." As far as i know they are manufacturers of lines of "discount" mattresses. I don't have knowledge of their recycling program.

Question : Wood outdoor furniture care? I have chairs and a potting bench that are looking shabby. Help?
What type of product should I put on them and how? They are both stained to look like redwood and are fading and drying out.
Answer:
Clean them up with an oxyclean and water solution. Either apply and then power wash or apply and then scrub. After cleaning decide if the furniture needs to be sanded.Then apply an outdoor deck stain. Behr (sold at Home Depot) has a nice redwood stain.

Classic "English"garden benches are often made of teak.Insect & rot resistant but pricey.White cedar would also be a good choice for same reasons.but is softer & will not last as long.Recommend stainless steel screws to avoid staining the wood esp if using cedar which will eat up common fixings.Either can be left unfinished & will go "silver "w/ time.A marine supply store will have "teak oil" used on boats which hold up well & protect against sun & moisture.Does not form a "skin"& is easily touched up .They will also have "brighteners" to clean up before re -treating.Best regards

Question : Why are my cats so very naughty?
I have two cats both 1 and a half years old. They are brother and sister. We got them from a friend who's cat had babies. When my cats were first born and up to 6 or 7 weeks old they were outdoor living with there mum. When they were given to us we decided to keep them fully indoor because we lived on a main road and didn't want anything bad to happen to them. The only thing is our cats are so naughty! yes they are probably very bored with the kids at school 6 hours a day and myself and husband at work. We leave the two cats in a spare bathroom when we are out which is not very big. In the room there is scratching posts, there food and water bowls, there kitty litter and lots of places to sleep but not very much space to run around. We do this because we know that they will jump on the bench tops and eat everything in site. They will also scratch our leather furniture and just create a muck. I understand that they may still be young but will they ever change. I sometimes think that maybe we should let them go outside so they can be free but i really don't want them to get run over. What can i do to make my cats calm down a bit so we are able to trust them to be good cats when we are out?I should add that both cats have been disexed but the male cat tends to pee regularly outside his litter box. (On my rug, on blankets, on anywhere soft really) what can we do?

They are not being stimulated enough while they are stuck all day in a bathroom. They should have toys to play with. You can get all different types items to stimulate your cats. If it is possible, you should put them in a room that has a window. You'd be surprised how much it will help for your cat to have something to look at all day besides the wall. Your cats are storing their energy in all day and then releasing it when you get home. When you let them out you should play with both cats. Buy a laser pointer and wear them out so your cats don't take their energy out on your furniture. Be careful not to use the laser pointer too much because your cats will become obsessed with it. You can also let them play with their new toys throughout the house. A cheap and easy toy is a ball of tinfoil. You also need to clip your cat's nails once a week. There are plenty of videos on YouTube on how to do it. Buy a water gun or put coins in a tin can. Cats hate either one. When your cat shreds the furniture shake the can or squirt the cat with the gun. Leave the scratching post near your sofa so the cat will learn to choose the post and not the sofa.As for the urinating, you can buy absorbent pads in the pet store to place around the litter box. If he is missing you may want to use less litter so he pees on the wall of the litter box. Buy a spray that cleans the stains and removes the scent of the urine. Your cat will keep urinating in the same spot if he can smell where he marked his territory. Good Luck and read books, watch videos and ask professionals. It will help you become a pet expert.

Question : What is the best weather-proof sealer for outdoor furniture?
I have a bench that has worn down to the bare wood and it needs a sealer. Any suggestions ?
Answer:
a marine varnish is a very good sealer but cost more than say a exterior polyuerethane but worth it , wood preservatives like thompsons waterseal soak into the wood and dont leave a hard sealed finish not to mention soaking into your clothes unless dried for a month or so and then you will still have the splinter problem. Varnish has always been a good old product, just ask a old wise dude and they will tell you how bad the products are these days due to the EPA , another 50 years there probably wont be any good clearcoats available

Question : What is a reasonable asking price for a used bench swing set?
Hi, I have a bench swing set that I'm looking to sell on craigslist. It's a few years old but it's in decent shape. There is a little bit of rust in some spots, but it is not falling apart in any way. What would be a reasonable asking price for a bench swingset like that? I'm not really too familiar with outdoor lawn furniture, so I thought I would ask around so that I know what is a fair offer and what is a pathetic lowball offer. Just out of curiosity, how much do these things sell for new at walmart and home depot? When I went to walmart.com, the only ones I saw were the ones with chains that you hang to a ceiling, not the kind I have here.
