Questions & Answers
Question : Does anyone have a hobby of model trains?
I have modeled HO scale since i was little, no thanks to my dad and brother. Anyway, I want to paint two different rooms in my house the same color scheme as the BN (green, black, white), and another room the same as Santa Fe (silver, red, yellow). So does anyone know how I would find a match for exact colors as the real thing only in house paint colors? I hope that is all clear enough. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

Answer:
Most paint stores have a laser-matching device, which can match colors from any source to standard house paint. Use an HO model, or a magazine photo, or a photo downloaded from the web, and printed on a good color printer. Just a suggestion: paint a "separator stripe" in white, to go between the black and the green. Cover it with about 1" masking tape. This will keep the line between the other two colors clean, and represent the long hoods of the rebuilt "whiteface" locos. You can also do a yellow stripe/black pinstripe for the Santa Fe scheme of silver and red. Again, check pix of the locos on the web and in magazines like TRAINS and Model Railroader.

Question : A sports person that does many different hobbies?
Ok, so for my french homework, I need to explain either my hobbies or a sportsperson. But I can't do me, because I'm nil at hobbies, so I need a sportsperson who I can explain their hobbies in detail. Do any of you know of somebody who maybe does lots of sports as part as their training?Thank you/merci!

Answer:
surely you can make it up? Usain bolt is a runner, however he likes to play football and cricket (as well as watching them on tv)and has taken part in triple jump, hurdles and long jump (just make them additional hobbies). He also does a lots of training, and different excercises. Or....Tom Daley? He likes hanging out at the cinema with his mates, he likes swimming and diving (quite obvious) and one of his hobbies is wakeboarding. He likes eating Sausage and Mash with ice cream to follow and listening to the black eyed peas. Also, my link gives a lot of different swimmers profiles :)

Question : Is there a difference between Toy Model Trains, Model Trains and Toy Trains?
I'm thinking about starting a new hobby. I like trains so I was thinking of buying a train set and laying it out in my garage. I'm new to this hobby and I've been searching on the internet to find which trains to buy and I've noticed some sites use the term "Model Trains" while others use "Toy Trains" and "Toy Model Trains". I'm just curious if there is a difference between these three or do they all mean the same thing? Thanks

Answer:
Yes, there is a difference, though it isn't "standardized" as best as I know...Model Trains are intended to be ACCURATE models of the real thing. In the USA, they are standardized by the NMRA (National Model Railroad Association) regarding scale, and electrical and software standards also. There are varied levels of detail and accuracy... some manufacturers have two "brands" accurate for the normal modeler, and hyper-detailed for the modeler with a BIG wallet.Toy Model Trains are in between model trains and toy-trains.Toy Trains are simply that... TOYS that look like trains. If you're interested in model railroading, I'd suggest these two links:National Model Railroad Association http://www.nmra.org/Model Railroading magazine http://www.trains.com/mrr/GOOD LUCK and I'm happy to help with follow-up information

Question : Is there a standard size for model trains?
Sine I was a child I wanted to collect model trains. Recently my gf bought me a model train for my bday. I have seen different sizes in the hobby shops and I was wondering if there is a "popular" size. I do not care for the large ones (no offense to those who do) and I do not want "tiny" trains... Is "NH" a common size?My intention is to build one of the monumentous train "towns" you see in exhibits. I do not want to spend years collecting sizes that may difficult to keep up with.Thank you to all of you for answerting. This has reeeeeealllly been helpful.YES, it is worth 10

Answer:
HO is the most popular size with about two thirds of hobbyists specializing in that scale. A typical train car is about 6-8" long in this scaleN scale is the next most popular with about 20% of hobbyists choosing that size. A typical train car is about 3 - 4" long in this scale. The other scales are not as popular.

Question : I need help with hobby things! Trains and stuff. ?
I want to build a landscape with trains and slot cars but I need to know some basics. What do the different sizes of trains mean(HO ect.). What is a good website for all of the stuff and how do I start? Thank so for your help.

Answer:
Here is one site that has some gauges and their size on it but a real craft store if you called or a toy store could probably explain the sizes so you'd understand them better.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toy_trainHere is a better site:http://nttmuseum.org/abouttoytrains/index.htmHo gauge is a small to mid sized train. The box car measures 6 7/8" long and the gauge is the distance between the track rails.

Question : is there no way to start a model train hobby without a lot of money?
im interested in starting a WW2 layout, and most prices are very expensive. is it this way for all model trains?

Answer:
I model in G and N scale and I also like military vehicles as well. You're right about the prices. They can be high. Sometimes you can find deals at train shows and on ebay but buying full retail can really eat up the hobby dollar. I don't have an N scale layout but I do have an outdoor G scale layout. This was an N Scale train that I ran on Christmas day.http://www.flickr.com/photos/22021033@N06/3135636578/I picked up most of the flat cars on ebay at about $5 each. (Watch the shipping charges). The trucks I picked up at Big Lots for $1 each and the tanks at Walmart for $2 each. The engine was a little pricey but it's pretty much top of the line and you can certainly get others for under $50 if you shop around. I started getting serious sticker shock on G scale so instead of spending a lot of money for a building or car, I started buying tools instead and then building cars and buildings. I got pretty good at it and I sometimes sell some of the bridges and cars that I've built. http://www.flickr.com/photos/22021033@N06/sets/72157604814841389/http://www.flickr.com/photos/220210 33@N06/sets/72157605220541507/http://www.flickr.com/photos/22021033@N06/sets/72157604814879597/I've also started building my own WWII military vehicles out of wood. These are roughly scaled for little green army men which would be about 1/32 to 1/35 scale. This on the low side of G scale as some of it is made in 1/32 scale. http://www.flickr.com/photos/22021033@N06/sets/72157614647571749/The most expensive parts of these models is the glue and paint. I get the wood from a construction company when they clean up job sites.Anyway bottom line is you can spend as much or as little as you want. Shop around and spend some time scratchbuilding and you can make your dollar go a long way. Good luck and hope this helps.

Question : What is the best book or starter kit for a beginner with Model Trains?
One of my best friends mentioned years ago that his dad did model trains and had a big model train table before his dad passed away. He mentioned that he wanted to make something similar to it when he gets older, in part because it’s one of the few memories he has of his father. I’ve only recently remembered this conversation and I thought a starter kit or an informative book for beginners might be good for him as a birthday or Christmas present. Does anyone know anything about this hobby that might be able to make some good suggestions?

Answer:
Great Idea... the books I'd suggest come from Kalambach Publishing (they print Model Railroading Magazine):They have a nice SERIES of book that cover the basics, and also that deal with "realistic" operations and design of the layout. Here is a link to get you started: http://kalmbachcatalog.stores.yahoo.net/model-railroading-books-model-railroading-for-beginners.html ONE I truly suggest is "Realistic Operations": http://kalmbachcatalog.stores.yahoo.net/12231.html

Question : Where Can I get A large hobby train to go around a store?
I have a candy store and want to put it around the walls to put specials on. Any advice on where I can purchase a large train like this?

Answer:
The largest standard train models that are still smaller than those people ride on are Garden Trains (G Scale) http://www.gardentrains.com/This assumes you want a running train and are willing to provide the track to run on and somehow get past doorways - remember, it can't change level much.

Question : What hobbies could increase my strength?
I never liked exercise, but I found out I love to dance. So I go swing dancing a lot. It's very good aerobic exercise, so now I'm wondering if I can find a hobby to give me some strength training. Just going to the gym bores the heck out of me. Any ideas?

Answer:
swimming or any sport really
