Questions & Answers
Question : ...I feel as though I've wasted my money on a really moronic trading card game called "Magic The Gathering"...?
In case anyone doesn't know what "Magic: The Gathering" is, it's a collectible trading card game. I spent around $300 on it (that's about what most people pay) because I was really interested in it. So, I get everything ready to go and head down to the local comic shops or whatever they're called now. I believe I went to around "5" of these places to make sure I wasn't just having bad luck.I've noticed some incredibly annoying things (these aren't coincidences, mind you, considering they were prevalent in all of the stores that I visited) that have really put me off from playing:1. The people smell in every possible way, whether it be their hair, their teeth, etc.Am I in their face smelling their hair? No, of course not; I can smell it across the table. I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, but I kind of wish I had some sort of pomander with me. It was bad.2. They eat/drink/etc while they play.I wouldn't have a problem if it was a bottle of water... but a god damn burger and fries? MINI PIZZAS? Grease grease grease. Gross. Maybe that's why their hair is so greasy. Maybe the rub the deep-fry grease into their bodies like bath oil.3. They are weird. What do they have to talk about? World of Warcraft. Anime. World of Warcraft. Hentai. That's it. Oh yeah, and what new video-games are out.====Like I said, I totally feel as though I've wasted this $300 down the drain. I invested the money into the game was the assumption (look who's the moron now) that I was going to go into a room with cleanly and hygienic people and play A CARD GAME WITHOUT THE FEELING AS THOUGH I'M SITTING IN A GOD HIGH-SCHOOL CAFETERIA.What do I do? Sell the cards? FML!
Answer:
I play magic and i can tell u for sure, not all of us are like that, i have met some pretty down to earth people and they are usually chill, nice people. It depends on your interests, u can try to sell the cards, i say good luck on it. i just bought over 4,000 cards for $32 on ebay. I say keep them, its a fun game to teach your family.

Question : What courses should a collectible card game seller take?
Say, if I wanted to own my own trading card game shop, what courses should I take? Management or something else?
Answer:
I've been in the antiques and collectibles business for more than 25 years. I own an auction co. and have had 2 retail stores in the past. If I'd have had the internet when I started out, I'd have never gotten a brick and mortar store. If I were you, I'd consider learning the ins and outs of eBay, open up a store there. I've been on eBay for 10 years and I can assure you that there's nothing like it for getting a good retail education. From there you'll learn much of what you need to know to run a store, but be warned, if your successful on eBay, you probably won't need to open a physical store.Another thing you can try is to get a job at a store similar to the one you want to open. There is no education like hands on education. Why pay good money for something you can get paid to learn? And you'll learn things there that you can't learn in a course.Good luck!

Question : where do shops selling collectible actions figure, trading cards and video game, etc. get their merchandise?
trying to open a small shop in my town, but no idea how to actually get the merchandise. Me and my friend think that opening a shop in our town selling things like posters, xbox/ps3/wii video games, collectible action figures, trading card games (pokemon. magic, etc) and table top RPG games and accessories (minis, books, etc.) would be a great idea, and could do pretty good business aswell. The only thing is we've never ran a business like this before, and we have no idea how to actually get our stock and merchandise. We've googled randon sites and none so far seem suitable, nor trustworthy. Any tips or websites to go to, or anything at all to help us understand and figure out how to get these products? Thanks.
Answer:
Usually they get them from the manufacturer, or from a wholesaler/distributor. I'm fairly friendly with a local comic/games shop owner, and I know that he gets his merchandise from a wholesaler, who puts out a catalog for his customers. I tell the comic shop guy "Hey, I want three Cosmic Wimpout dice sets", and he puts in a call to the distributor. Some manufacturers will deal with individual shop owners, and give them a wholesale price, and others won't, so you'll have to go through a wholesaler.I'd start by just writing (email or snailmail) the manufacturers of the merchandise that you want to carry. For instance, Bandai for action figures, Wizards of the Coast for CCGs and various pen & paper game accessories, Chessex and other dice makers, etc. Ask them if they sell wholesale, or if they sell to distributors. I know that at least some of the dice makers sell dice displays as well as just the dice. So start by Googling the manufacturers and contacting them. Go to various cons, and ask about becoming a retail outlet for various items.I have to tell you, though, that most small businesses fail within the first five years or so. And mostly, it's because they're undercapitalized. That is, the entrepeneurs didn't have enough money to keep the business running. You have to assume that the business will bleed money for the first couple of years, then it will still lose money for a couple of years, but not as quickly, and sometimes it will break even at the fifth year. This means that you need to have enough money to run the business AND live on for at least five years, or that you can get enough credit to pay those bills. Every cent you make during those first years needs to be plowed back into the business. And you have to realize that a game shop doesn't sell anything that anyone really needs. I mean, I love my comics and games, but when I'm going through a financial pinch, this is one of the first areas that I eliminate. So don't go into business thinking that you're going to be able to live on it immediately.
