Editorial Review :
Buffalo Games Audubon Hummingbird II Jigsaw Puzzle 500 Pieces 18" X 18" Ages 10+ This Audubon Birds 500pc Puzzle of the Hummingbird II (Rufous Hummingbird) used to be an easy bird to pin down - it breeds in the Pacific Northwest from northern California to southern Alaska, and it winters in southwestern Mexico. It has an interesting migration along the Pacific Coast in early spring and along the western mountains, including the highest meadows, in summer and fall. But in recent years, more and more Rufous Hummingbirds are being seen in the eastern states in the fall and along the Gulf of Mexico - from Florida to Texas - all winter long.

Question : What strategy games are there?
I need to do this for a girl scout requirement and I was wondering what kind of new and rare (by rare I mean a game that a lot of people don't know how to play) strategy games are out there. I don't mean things like tetris or games you play on the internet or on a game station. I mean stuff like chess, or solitaire, a board game, or checkers. So what strategy games do you know?
Answer:
How about thousands of new boardgamesatboardgamegeek.comReal games are common in Europe while here the horriblebig games companies don't want you see (so they are rarely heard of - as your question shows!) such great games asSettlers of CatanSaint PetersburgPower GridTake a look.

Question : What are the best strategy board games?
I love them! I already have Mensa Connections, Quatro, Traverse, and Stratego (Admirals). I know chess is a good one, but it takes me way too long to make my decisions...
Answer:
Diplomacy is tops.

Question : Ang good war strategy board games?
I like Risk(c), but my family says its too simple and boring. Are there any more interesting war strategies games that are good family games. any suggestions? How is Axis and Allies? I also like when they have the concept of world domination.
Answer:
Hi Steven,GREAT question. My favourite alternative to Risk (which I agree is boring) is Nexus Ops. Instead of little plasitc pieces, you command armies of glow-in-the-dark mutant space bugs--how wicked is that? Another excellent strategy game is Tigris and Euphrates. It's incredibly strategic, never boring, but doesn't have cool bits. My first big domination game was Struggle of Empires. It's an all-afternoon beast, but soooo satisfying. I wrote a review of it here:http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/264164But I'm not an expert on war games. Still, I know a great place to look: boardgamegeek.com. They know everything about the best board games (and no, this isn't some spam site: BGG is the largest online boardgame database). You can drop me a message there (same name) if you want more info, but you should have no trouble finding your own way around. Here are some places to start looking:This list must have been written with you in mind!http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/35661If you go to this page, you can specify what kind of game (even which war/period!) to search for:http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeksearch.php?action=advsearch&objecttype=boardgameGood luck and happy gaming.

Question : What's your opinion of the following board games?
I tried out Acquire and loved it. These are games that were also recommended to me.1. Power Grid2. Ticket to Ride3. Diplomacy4. Carcasonne5. Puerto Rice- Rio Grande game6. St. Petersburg- Rio Grande game7. Settlers8. SequenceI'm a big fan of strategy games. Perhaps dwelve briefly into the strategy of each game. Also, which is your favorite?
Answer:
Power Grid - Combination of resource management and territory control. Game tends to build slowly, then cascade at a faster pace toward the end.Ticket to Ride - Great intro game, lots of expansions. Randomness in the form of available trains and tickets drawn. Light strategy.Diplomacy - Heavy strategy, lots of deceit. Don't play with friends who you're interested in keeping as friends.Carcassonne - Tile laying modularity with area control elements. A ton of expansions that alter basic game play.Puerto Rico - Major resource management with impact from role/action selection.St. Petersburg - Pure resource management. Limited randomness, fairly linear play.Settlers - The "founding father" of euro-style strategy games in the US. Great fun, some random elements (production), trade, resource and territorial control.Sequence - Boardgame driven by a deck of cards, so obvious randomness from that. Strategy increases in team play, requiring coordination without table talk.Personal favorite for folks that have all played the game is Power Grid, followed by St Petersburg/Settlers (depending on group size). I've just never "gotten" Puerto Rico. For teaching/introducing new people; Ticket to Ride, followed by Carcassonne.

Question : how many of you play educational board games? How do you feel about these compared to computer games?
would you rather play one or the other? if you do like the board game variety better do you have a difficult time finding a good selection? I am only interested in unique, hard to find games that actually teach subjects in school or about life in general. unique strategy games that corrolate with history or let the player use the mind first and foremost is OK, too. games such as Monopoly and scrabble do not apply. some luck oriented games are OK if they are different and unique.http://www.djoyner.com
Answer:
I prefer board games to computer games.I have variety of educational board games for all levels with having to rely on the mass market boardgames. I do not have trouble because of Boardgamegeeks, National Board Game Week ( The forth week of November), and several publications (I really don't have them with me right now) that list the level, age group, subject matter (math, science, history, geography, etc.. )For myself, ALL boardgames are hard to find.

Question : does anyone know of any websites that give guidelines for making strategy based board games?
although i covered most of my question in my question title, i am specifically looking for guidelines on making TILE based stratedy games. you see, i'm in the middle of social no-where and am so bored i give a new meaning to the word. if anyone could assist me, you would be saving my sanity. thanks.
Answer:
Two very big resources for board game design: www.boardgamegeek.com has a large community and several good resources. There is even a designer community there.www.bgdf.com (board game designers forum) is a community of people that all want to design games. Many have and either self publish games or have had games published. I think it is great. They both have information on what you seek, but if you sign up at BGDF you will get just about any question answered. I suggest you start with the "getting started" tab at the top of their home page, think what you want to make your game about, and go from there. I'm in the middle of designing a tile game myself right now.Willi_Bwejbaldwin

Question : What kind of board games are the most fun?
What kinda board games do you like? strategy games like risk, diplomacy, and other games like that or things like clue, monopoly, and so on?Also what do you think is better simplistic board games or the ones that are a little more in depth but have more rules to follow??
Answer:
My husband & I are big Eurogamers. European-style board games are more strategic & complex than American-style board games (e.g. Monopoly, Clue), but can often be played in an hour, sometimes two.I enjoy "lighter" games like Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, Pandemic (which is a cooperative game), Yspahan, Samurai, Cleopatra, Through the Dessert, Small World, San Juan... I don't like games that are overly strategy-based because I tend to lose badly, but my husband loves games with a little more substance to them: Agricola, Battlelore, Caylus, Rune Wars, Mr. Jack, Puerto Rico. You can learn more about these and similar games at Board Game Geek:http://www.boardgamegeek.com
