Question : How can I contribute furniture as start up capital to my new business if I do not have receipts for them?
Hi,I am have just formed a new company in my home and want to contribute my old furniture (in addition to money) as a start-up investment. This furniture is about 4 months old and I do not have any receipts for them. I do have CC statements though.1) Can I contribute this furniture as start-up assets to my business?2) How do I decide FMV for the furniture if I do not have receipts? Thanks
Answer:
You should start by reading the IRS rules for home office expense, and deciding if the furniture qualifies as being deductible. Personally, I wouldn't try to take a tax deduction for it unless it was in an area of my home designated as the office, and 100% used for that purpose. If the furniture is in your living room and used partially for business use and partially for personal use, the IRS will see a red flag if you get audited.If you do have a deductible home office, then the furniture in that office can be treated as a capital asset and depreciated over the life of the furniture. You may also be able to deduct the entire amount right away using Section 179 depreciation expense.It seems the credit card statements could serve as proof of your cost. However, since it has only been four months you might also be able to get your retailers to provide you with copies of the receipts.I would take a reasonable percentage of the furniture's cost to assign market value. If it is only 4 months old, it is probably in near new condition. Nevertheless, it has gone down in value somewhat. I think they say a car goes down in value by as much as 25% when you drive it off the lot. Seems like you could value the furniture at 70-90% of what you paid for it, depending on its condition, since it is so new.An even better way of valuing the furniture might be to decide what depreciation would be over the life of the furniture, then compute the amount attributable to the 4 months of home use and reduce the cost of the furniture by that amount. What is the best furniture fabric and color for pet hair?I have an Australian shepherd and two cats. I want to get microfiber furniture (the cats are not declawed). I want to know is this the most durable fabric for my money? Also, what color should I pick so pet hair won't really be too noticeable? I can't really prevent the animals from getting on the couches because they sleep on it at night and during the day when I am at work. One good hint of advice----Get a pet throw (couch blanket) for the areas they sleep on, it'll save the furniture. Also a miracle brush to get fur off easily. The blanket can be washed as needed, and a second blanket may be needed to cover all the couch if the dog is up there too. I'd rather get fur on the blanket which is replaceable, than woven into the furniture cushions.Best color? I'll say gray. I've got a medium brown and things show up on it. Black or white would show fur like crazy. Plaid is ugly, but will disguise the fact some fur is on it.A loose weave is the worst for cats, it encourages them to dig claws in. A tight weave like most 'furry' upholstery fabrics is pretty good.

Hi, we are buying a new set of sofa (Leather), a new dining table (glass top with steel/aluminium bottom) and a cot (wooden). We would be using it for 2 months. Later we would be going to a different place for 4 to 5 years before we get back here again and use this furniture. During this long absence we are planning to pack all the furniture and lock it up in a room till we get back (after 4 to 5 years). Please let me know how I can pack these pieces of furniture and with what material should I pack such that once we get back the furniture is still in good shape as it would be today. Just sheets/drop cloths to keep the dust off. I wouldn't wrap in plastic as the leather needs to breathe. Also, don't stack the upholstered pieces, it will collapse the padding over time. If space requires stacking the items, I'd build a simple platform (2x4's and plywood) to place one piece above another.It would also be a good idea to give all metal pieces a heavy coat of furniture paste wax to prevent rust/corrosion.

Apparently Cane furniture is out of fashion (all the old mills around here that used to sell Cane have now closed down), so what is the best furniture to put in a Conservatory? During the last two or three years I've noticed two distinct directions in the conservatory furniture trends.1. A revival of modern furniture (strong colors and fabrics, simple lines, smart proportions) which is rather dull if not adjusted carefully to the light.2. Solid wood furniture, which looks great in the evening, but, again, rather inappropriate during the daytime. Question : What is the most efficient way to move furniture to mop the floor?
I want to mop the entire floor in my room. There is some dirty areas both underneath the furniture and the floor area around the bottom edge of the furniture.Should move all the furniture out the room, and mop the entire floor at once? It's seems more efficient but takes more work. Or should I move once piece of furniture out the way and mop the floor that was underneath and move it back, and then do it again for another piece of furniture? This takes more patience.
