Questions & Answers
Question : Toy Suggestions for toddler?
My daughter is 20.5 months old and I'm looking to buy her new toys, all her old ones are babyish and she won't play with them. I'm wanting to know what toys your children at her age liked playing with. She has a pram, and a huge amount of dolls, she is getting a wooden kitchen for her birthday with accessories.

Answer:
Anything by Leap Frog.

Question : Do you ever find yourself going overboard buying toys for your little one?
My daughter is almost 17 months old and for Christmas she got all kinds of toys. Not a huge giant amount but she's not lacking toys, that's for sure. I shouldn't buy her anymore toys since we just just Christmas but I keep feeling like she is bored, stuck in the house all the time because it's snowing like crazy. Then I go online to look something simple up, like I want to get her a mirror because she loves to put on scarfs, hats, and accessories and look at herself in the mirror. She only has a scratched up mirror for a tiny baby, not a toddler. Anyway, she loves Disney princess themed things so I end up looking at tons of toys and they get more and more expensive but I feel addicted to toy shopping. lol It's all so adorable and cute and it feels like they never have everything you know. I ended up going from mirror to bath toys to dolls to doll houses to toddler furniture. There is just too much cool stuff for kids!

Answer:
I can definitively feel for you. I have the same reaction. I love shopping for my daughter. I could look forever at cute clothing, especially shoes, toys, furniture, cloth diapers and so on for my daughter. Since I'm SAHM, our budget is limited, so I rarely go overboard actually buying the stuff. But I sure know the temptation.

Question : What's on your Christmas list for your toddler girl?
My daughter will be almost 17 months on Christmas. I want to buy her a few big gifts instead of a lot of little ones. I was thinking the Fisher-Price "My first doll house" and also the accessories that go with it. I also want to get her a doll, since she only has one. I kind of feel like I want to go crazy and spoil her but I am trying to keep myself from doing this because I'm trying not to live above my means. But...it's Christmas! lol I go back and forth...Do you go overboard with the gifts on Christmas? It seems like so much fun to do! What are you getting your toddler girl? Especially, what is the big present you are getting her?

Answer:
It's funny, up until recently, I haven't had any ideas on what to get my now 18-month-old daughter as we have "everything" from my three-year-old son. But, this Christmas, I've got loads of ideas and somehow have to whittle them down. lol. The FP My First Dollhouse is definitely on the list. The reviews are great and she loves Little People stuff so the dollhouse seems like a great way to introduce a dollhouse and encourage more imaginative play.A definite gift will be Fisher Price's Little Mommy set -- a doll, stroller, bassinet and chair/carrier thing. Costco has a version of it for a great price and my daughter loves playing with dolls, pretending to feed them, giving hugs and kisses etc. And, all kids, boy or girl, well at least the ones I know, adore pushing around stollers.A tricycle. We're doing the Radio Flyer lights and sounds one as we already have a push-bar one from my son and I got a great deal on it. Although she isn't able to pedal yet so maybe this one should wait in my closet until her 2nd birthday. Hmmmm... But, if your daughter doesn't have a push bar one, that would be a good idea. One with a belt is best (we improvise with a person's belt when she rides her brother's, which doesn't have a seat belt, but she still has tons of fun on it). Of course, our winters are fairly mild and some of the days can still have time outside playing. If you have harsh winters, a tricycle can wait until a 2nd birthday too. Although, I will say, my son learned to pedal during the winter, using it indoors instead of out. Outside was too scary for him to learn to pedal. :)Both my children are getting Step 2's Up & Down Roller Coaster as a joint gift. My daughter is a thrill seeker and this will probably be her favorite toy. We have a large basement and this will also come in handy for all those afternoons stuck indoors due to cold weather. Again, it gets great reviews and almost all of the people who purchase it say they are 100% glad they did. Before I chose this though, I was debating between it and one of the ride-on electric trains, like the Thomas one or Peg Perego Santa Fe ones. I still think that would be a great gift for a 17/18 month old, but I ended up choosing the roller coaster because I think they'll be able to get more use out of it for longer. In the same sort of idea, indoor "outside play" for the winter, I'm debating the Little Tikes or Step 2 large slide. We go to an indoor play session at our community center and the slide is a HUGE hit with my kids, especially my 18 month old, she'll just climb and slide for an hour straight. Of course, it's pricey, so with the roller coaster, I don't know if this will happen, but I know she would love it if we do get it.Other things, a rolling toddler-sized backpack. My daughter ADORES her brother's preschool backpack and will spend hours filling it up, emptying it out and pulling it all over the house. But, it has to have the wheels, like a suitcase, as that's the biggest draw. She has other bags without wheels and doesn't play with them at all. Grandma already got one for her. :)I know it may seem "gender-wrong," especially for first children who are girls and who don't seem to be as into stereotypically boy toys, but here are some ideas of my son's toys that my daughter plays with every day. She loves his wooden train set and will play with it every day. Who knows, she may be just mimicing her brother, but she really seems to like it. Another one is a matchbox car racetrack thing that we have. Probably not totally age-appropriate, but she loves sending cars or trains or, well anything, sliding down the tracks. A Little Tikes kitchen with plastic food stuff. She pretends to wash her hands and eat the food, drink from the cups etc. She also has a lot of fun just taking all the food and utensils out of their storage container and putting them in the stove and back again. Oh, the shopping cart for the same purpose is on our list, although, since we're getting the stroller I probably won't get the cart as well. But, it does seem to be a big hit with young toddlers.Isn't it fun shopping for your kids?? :)

Question : American Girl dolls for younger kids?
Does anyone have experience with getting a toddler an american girl doll? I know they're recommended for girls around 8, but I'm a bit excited to get my daughter one and I'm not sure if it's necessary to wait that long. I wouldn't give her any of the small accessories. Would it be too big for her to carry? I don't know, should I go with the bitty baby or twins instead?

Answer:
My 4 year old has an AG style doll (it's actually Madam Alexander but same basic thing) and I'm about ready to strangle the relative who gave it to her. It's not that they're too big or the accessories are too small, the HAIR is a friggin nightmare to keep neat. It's less trouble to keep my child's hair neat, I swear. I can spend a good 45 minutes getting all the snarls out of that dolls hair and within half a day, it's back to looking like a rat's nest.Go with the Bitty Baby for now. My mother bought one for each of the grand-daughters to keep at her house. They're a good size and a good feel.

Question : let's be mean your fashion 10 worst list?
It has been done before, even by me but every so often I feel the need ask again what are the worst fashion trends you see out and about at the mall or school or on the street. This is your chance to let it out!1. Still goes to sagging pants. Why can't guys get there pant waists up where the waist of their body is perplexes me. That is why it's called the waist of your pants not the butt or knee of your pants. I don't want to see your ugly expensive underwear mommy bought, I don't care if you are afraid of a poopy stain because you can't wipe properly. Pull them up!2. Affliction and Ed Hardy clothes I loathe them so, however, as much I loathe them it has made that much easier to tell who is afflicted by douchbaggery because it makes you look like one. And I am still at a loss as to why people feel the need to wear huge logos on everything like they are a billboard.3. "Vintage" band shirts, especially for tours from long before the wearer was born. I don't screw with your bands by a shirt for music I care nothing about so my bands alone, thanks you. And as a 3 1/2 how come there are no band shirt for legendary women musicians on the same level as men. Carole King, Etta James, Heart, Aretha, Joni Mitchell?4. Vampires are in and that is so not cool as the son of dentist if I see another pair of fake fangs I'm draw some blood but not with my plastic teeth.5. Uggs (Auusie called them that cause they were ugly so who in the US decided they were cute).6. Lensless glasses, shutter glasses... what the... glasses are meant to help you see or protect your eyes not block your vision and look stupid the process.7. emo/scene hair mostly because when it is done it is done wrong and poorly (e.g. DIY). It looks way to poofed out and frizzy thanks to the flat ironing and the hairspray. Then of course there is the whole "layered" effect and the reverse mullet (short in the back long in the front). I've see a few folk do it well but just end up looking whiny and moody but with bad hair. I almost went that root but then I went to this person called a "hairstylist" who is trained to work with hair and she saved my follicles. Lastly ye with the emo hair usually have it covering the the eyes. Okay it looks cool occasionally in a photo but all the time is just dumb. You can't see where you are going so you run into me and then I have to punch you.8. Not really fashion related other than it sets up awful stereotypes and gives bad ideas to young children about how girls should look, but Bratz dolls and the worse toddler bratz dolls (how Bratz got worse is a miracle). This is on my radar because I am now an Uncle and I'll be damned if her self-esteem will be altered by effing trashy dolls. Which means of course the the whole Disney and it sexist teen stars and shows is also on my watch list.9. Foil gansta print on anything especially guns and diamonds.10. A belt is a great accessory and I love some of the belt buckles you can find now. But wearing more than one belt and wearing it half on so it hangs down on the side is L-A-M-E. It is great however for giving me something to grab onto when I toss you and your emo hair in front of a taxi after you run into me because you couldn't see with the bad hair and the sutter shades.

Question : Do you think this is a bit micromanaging?
In regards to Day Care Centers in Colorado:"The pending regulations, proposed by the Department of Human Services' Child Care Division, include the following for toddler and infant classrooms:• All doll collections must represent at least three races.• Children shall not be required to participate in an activity and must have a choice of at least two alternative activities.• Children are not allowed to drink whole milk unless they have a written note from their health care provider.• Each type of art material shall have a minimum of 10 pieces, such as 10 paints, 10 paintbrushes, 10 crayons.• Each classroom shall have at least two sets of blocks with a minimum of 10 blocks per set.• Each classroom shall have a variety of at least five accessories for each block and be representative of people, animals, transportation, etc.In addition, the proposed rules say that “activities shall be culturally sensitive and represent diversity” and that “boys and girls shall not be restricted to gender-specific role-playing.”"http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2011/jul/13/colorado-proposal-would-impose-para meters-on-day-c/Please keep it mind these are proposals, but the fact that they actually made it into the considered report - and someone proposed them - seems to say it all.

Answer:
See, now, in Colorado there is Denver. And then there's the rest of us. Boulder sort of is a strange inbetween world ruled by people who are known for talking about their pets not as being owned but of having 'custody of', like children. Rules like these are typically made up by Denver and Boulder, and the rest of us tend to shake our heads and wonder what they're smoking. They typically don't pass, and if they do then most of us fight to get them repealed... but it rarely passes unless you vote someone into power who pushes it in the backdoor. Because... quite frankly... these sort of rules are the type of thing that Colorado natives think are stupid. We get all sorts of fun and funny proposals, especially out of Boulder. But don't take them seriously. None of us do.

Question : What are you getting your toddler girl fro Christmas this year?
I just need a few more things for my 2.5 YO and not really sure what to give her. She has a toy kitchen with ALL the accessories that Santa brought last year. SHe LOVES puzzles but we've already gotten a bunch of them. She also already had a doll house with most of the accessories. I was doing a lot of baby doll stuff as she is getting a baby brother a few weeks before Xmas and thought it would be a good way for her to get used to him and not crave soo much attention during feeding/diaper changes. So she will get a crib, high chair, travel seat and changing table along with smaller stuff for her babies. We also got her Tag Jr and a few books. I literally want like 1-2 more medium priced things between 20-40$. And then any stocking ideas. Also because it DOES make a difference for what she gets, she is classified as "gifted" and plays with most toys ranged for 3-5 YO's (aside from electronic games like vmotion ect because she doesnt have the coordination yet). But mentally she plays/learns like a 4 YO. So keep that in mind with suggestions pelase

Answer:
We have a daughter the same age. She's such a little girlie girl. She's getting a vanity with with toy hair dryers, pretend make up ... etc. I'm sure she's going to love it. We're also going to get her some dress up stuff, since lately she's shown interest in playing make believe. So, we'll get her scrubs, firefighter uniform, whatever is available.

Question : How much could I sell these items for at a G-sale?
You don't have to answer all... Just as many as possible please. Thanks in advance. We're having a garage sale soon and I just wanted to know what to price these items?1) Portable DVD Player. Nothing fancy... in pretty good condition. Includes wall charger, DVD player and remote for it. Nothing really wrong with it, just got a new one. Have had it for about 2 years and there are a couple TINY scratches. Still works though.2) A small girls, purple bike. In good condition... Some scratches, not too many. Still usable and tires aren't flat or anything... It's a pretty cute bike for a little girl. (well not like a baby or toddler... like a child... easily for a 1st-4th grade or so)3) TV. It's an old model, one of the bigger/heavier TV's. Works perfectly... just doesn't have the 3 holes (red, white/ yellow holes) that I need so used a different TV> Only comes with the TV and remote... nothing else. No scratches.4) Leap Pad kids game-type thing. In GREAT condition. Includes the Leap Pad itself, and two disk things needed to play that specific game and the books that go with it. Also have 2 more books but can't find the disks that you need so those can be extras or thrown away.5) Pretty big, white dollhouse/ book shelf. Split into 3 parts, top-middle is a doll house, the bottom (smaller) parts are a book shelf or could be used for a doll house. About 64inches tall or so. In FAIR condition... Needs a little work since it's made of wood but very usable and fixable (we'll fix/touch up before sale) and pretty heavy.6) Brand new, still in the package Gamecube silver controller7) 3 cute babydolls. Includes clothes with them too. Theres also baby doll accessories that can go too that have like small blankets, fake food etc.I'll add some more stuff later probably.
