Question : How do I rent to people with pets without having to replace my nice carpet?
Let's face it, even the best of pet owners is powerless to prevent a pet accident. Even my stepmom, who babies her poodle constantly, has to pick up an "unwelcome present" from time to time. I have just installed new carpet and would like to make it available to people who have pets (why discriminate against people who care about animals?). But how do I do it without having to pay huge amounts to clean/replace carpet every time someone moves? Does anyone have SUCCESSFUL experience with this?

You can list "no pets allowed". And to the landlord that made the comment about a pregnant barmaid with the cat, this is an isolated incident and just because they work in a bar doesn't make them deadbeats or noncollectable. I have given my landlords a $500 pet deposit ($250 nonrefundable) and am required to have the carpets professionally cleaned when I vacate and provide them with a receipt from the company that has done the cleaning. Yes my dogs have had their accidents but I clean it up ASAP as I don't want to live with doggie mess everywhere or smell it. I will be honest though I have 4 boys (ages 5-10) and they are capable of doing 10 TIMES more damage to the carpets and I am a stay-at-home mom who is constantly keeping on them to take off their shoes & keep drinks in the kitchen. But more accidents have come from spills & dirty feet than my 2 ten year old inside doggies. Just do a good job screening the people. But keep in mind you can't discriminate against tenants with children but you can with pets & aquariums (just put it in your listing).

Answer:
Yes, your vet or places like Petco should have the Info, I remember seeying something at the Vet's office where a company offered to insure a pet against all medical emergencies for something like $16 a month or so, with the way vet bills are that sounded great!

Question : How do I manage pets on a newly seeded lawn?
I am going to be putting some lawn patch repair on the bare parts of my fenced in backyard (mulch/fertilizer/seed) and also some turf builder on the rest of the lawn. When can I let the pets go back in their yard? Would it be best to supervise them when they are in the yard? The packages say it is safe for pets, but I am not sure it is safe for the grass for them to be on it. Any other suggestions would be appreciated on how I can avoid having a big muddy mess this spring since the winter/pets have turned the backyard into a big mess.

Its fine as long as they arent trampoling the seeds to death but Its best to keep them off.Make sure you keep the seeds well watered. They will need potassium. Potassium will strengthen the root system. Check the ingredients on the bag. Dont use it if it has alot of nitrogen, it can burn the new roots and kill it. Once the roots have developed after a month or 2, then use the nitrogen. Nitrogen encourages growth. Iron helps with color.I think the turf builder has alot of potassium and low nitrogen, that'll probly be good. Just dont over fertilize!

Question : How picky are airlines about the size of pet carriers for traveling with pets in cabin?
We'll be traveling internationally with Continental and Lufthansa. Both airlines have different size requirements for pet carriers--we have two mini dachshunds. Lufthansa requires 21.6 x 15.7 x 7.9 inches. Continental is 18 x 11 x 11 inches. Are they going to get out tape measures at the ticket counter? If we're an inch or two over will it be OK? It's impossible to to find pet carriers that are exactly the dimensions required. All tips about particular pet carriers or flying with pets would be greatly appreciated.

Question : How many people give pets as a Christmas gift?
I have never felt that giving pets as a "throw away" holiday gift was a very good idea, especially to very young children. They don't really know how to care for or properly handle a kitten or small puppy. Then after the novelty wears off, the poor animal is often mistreated or neglected, then thrown outside when the coldest part of the winter is settling in to starve or freeze to death. PLEASE - don't give pets as gifts, especially without consulting parents or guardians!

Answer:
Well, all the fairly small rodents are decent, such as hamsters, gerbils, and rats. They won't smell depending on the bedding you use as well. If you use odor control it won't smell, for I am using it now and my hamster doesn't bother anyone in the house. Of course if you get close enough it will smell, but don't get too picky. They don't need too much money spent on them. Just a cage, chew toys, treats, and bedding. Of course food and water are needed as well. Hope this helps!

How many pets does it take to be considered a pet hoarder? My neighbor has 6 or 7 dogs and some cats. City ordinance only allows 3 dogs/cats combined. Example 2 dogs and 1 cat.6 of the dogs are outside dogs

Are they cared for? Does the area they live in look well maintained? If so, then your neighbor is not a hoarder, just an animal lover. If there is a problem of the dogs getting into your garbage or on your property and doing damage, then get some evidence, like photos, and take it to your neighbor and ask him to restrain his dogs. If it is barking, again, get evidence and confront your neighbor. But if it is nothing more than the number of animals, and they are well cared for, just leave well enough alone. Those animals could end up in a pound and put down for no other reason than there were a few too many.
