Questions & Answers
Question : Where can I find hand held skate sharpeners?
I've taken a quick look around some malls and stuff but can't find any. And not being the kind to do that many sports, I have no idea where to look really. Can someone help me out? Will I have to order this by internet?

Answer:
No, no, no and NO! Attempting to sharpen your blades when you aren't a qualified professional will do nothing but ruin them. You may think that sharpening skates is easy, but it is not. To sharpen skates, you need to be able to know how to get the correct hollow size (everyone skates on different sized rockers), how to ensure that the edges are even (and that there ARE edges) as well as how to specifically sharpen figure or hockey skates. Unless you're planning on becoming a professional skate sharpener in a pro shop (which I highly doubt) I suggest you scrap this idea completely. The hand held sharpener probably wouldn't be much use anyway - they're fine to touch up your blades, but it's still a tricky process and quite pointless because you'd have to take them to be sharpened normally as well.It never costs more than $20 to get a pair of skates sharpened, and you don't need them sharpened awfully often. It really isn't worth ruining your blades with home sharpenings. Good luck! :)

Question : How good are these ceramic and diamond knife sharpeners...?
I have always used a steel or a stone but I am wondering if the diamond and ceramic sharpeners are any good.

Answer:
The primary benefit of both diamond and ceramic sharpeners is on some of the more modern steels that are tempered to be very, very hard. When you get into the range of RC60 or harder conventional Arkansas stones can seem to slow down in getting an edge on the knife. However, because the ceramic and diamond stuff is much harder than that there isn't a noticable difference in sharpening the harder steels. The other thing is that aluminum oxide ceramic sharpeners (the most common type) are easier to maintain, particularly in fine grits, than conventional stones. In a conventional stone as you remove metal it fills the "porosity" of the stone makes the stone less effective over time. Then you have to clean it to get that out, and you are good to go again. For some natural stones using conventional soap isn't that good for them (it can lead to them cracking) and you need to use red scotchbrite, not green on them or you actually rough up the stone's surface. (green scotchbrite actually is aluminum oxide and very, very abrasive.) However, with ceramics, if you have a dishwasher you are comfortable using you can toss them in there and they come out great. Now, none of this really matters if you are a casual knife sharpener and basically are dealing with your pocket knife and maybe hunting knife one or two times a quarter. However, I actually own a little (really little at the moment) knife company and probably sharpen 10 - 15 knives a month, sometimes more. So, tend to use more ceramics, because for volume sharpening they hold up better.Oh, and with regard to steels? As previously mentioned, steels primarily serve the purpose of smoothing out burrs and kerfs on an edge. They don't remove metal the way a stone does. I don't use them much, instead I actually have polishing tape for putting a polished edge on my knives.Thinkingblade

Question : Do they make pencil sharpeners specifically for colored pencils?
Whenever I try to sharpen a colored pencil, 9 times out of 10 it justs eats my pencil up so I resort to sharpening it with a knife, which takes a while. So, do they make pencil sharpeners JUST for colored pencils? If so, where could I find one and about how much would they cost? Thanks =)

Answer:

Question : Are new electric knife sharpeners as good as professionally sharpened?
I mean sharpeners like Chef's Choice or something. I have very expensive knives that i really like and i don't want to mess them up. IS there an electric sharpener that won't do anything bad and sharpen them the way good knives are supposed to be sharpened? if so, please list the type. (I have german and asian style knifes so different angles would be very nice. including an option for single bevel)

Answer:
i actually just went to a seminar on knife sharpening.the only way to get a well sharpened knife is with a whetstone. the electric sharpeners will, over time, develop a rounded edge to the knife. this is not visible to the eye, but it will mean that after a while your knife wont be as sharp and you'll need to grind down more and more of the metal to get a good edge, so you shorten the lifespan of your knife.for an inexpensive kitchen knife though, or for somebody who just doesn't want to use a whetstone, an electric one will be effective if not ideal

Question : What kind of Knife sharpeners should I get?
I have several extremely dull knives and I don't really know much about sharpening supplies. I was told to get a leather strop and a Bench-stone. The only problem is that there are several types of each product and I'm not sure which kind would be best. I was told Arkansas Stone is what I should get but again there are different types of that. So if someone could tell me what I need that would be much appreciated.
