Questions & Answers
Question : How do I keep my oil paints from drying?
I know the best thing about oil paints is that they dont dry so quickly, but when ever I used a lot of linseed, they dry very quickly. Im planning a painting and I want to keep the canvas and especially the palette wet for at least 2 weeks. How can I do this?
Answer:
Hi,Am I wrong when I think that you're a beginner to painting in general ?I'm not aware of a way to conserve them wet and workable for that long, unless you make more paint than needed and eventually the upper layers of paint will form a film that will protect the rest of the paint on the palette.Since oil paint dries through oxidation (sp?) and not evaporation, keeping them air tight will help but won't avoid drying.I believe that you concern is about getting the right colours again if one should dry, right ?Don't worry, with time you'll learn how to achieve the "same" colour again. Of course that is practically impossible to get the same colour 100%, but you'll have to learn how to trick the eye using fading techniques.Keep an eye on the value issues (darks and lights).Kind regards,José

Question : What are the two paints that create a shatter effect together?
I know that when you move into a home and you plan on painting, you must first test the paint to see what type it is so that you don't paint another kind over it and have the paint crack into a shatter effect. What are these two paints that do this together? I think the finish is very chic and cool.
Answer:
It's not "shatter", and it's not 2 paints. It's a "crackle medium" and latex paint, and very tricky to do to have a good result.ALL hardware stores sell it, and have many direction brochures..

Question : What are your favorite paints and brushes to use on canvas?
Okay so I want to know what paints and brushes are good for a rookie painter, who wants to paint on canvas. Nothing to expensive or too harsh. And what are your favorite things to paint?
Answer:
Buy the best brushes you can afford. The small detail brushes are worth paying a little more for, the big laying in brushes can be cheaper, some of the synthetics are pretty good. I buy sable Kalish brushes, I think you can find them online...

Question : Who spray paints the graffiti along the highways in the inner city?
I have always wondered this. I've worked in Detroit for nearly my entire career, and they never clean it up, but someone always comes along and freshens it up or covers it and paints something new. This spring we have all kinds of artwork with interesting and/or profane four-letter words, some I've never heard of before, decorating our freeways. Is there a community of artists out there? Do they ever catch and arrest anyone for this?
Answer:
Jenn, there called taggers. These are as your one posterpointed out the Printers for the gang's they represent. Mostof the tags are intelligence facts about what is Present, past, and future in the gang territory. Pending wars, pending territory disputes, are all a part of this form of vandalism.Gang Units around the country, can drive a area, and tell youthe name of the tagger, by there style, They can look at theseforms of communication and tell you when they need to beefup police patrols and when activity levels are going to increase. This is as much counter culture as it is a Problem,, Some ofthe taggers are actually great talents. They have stories totell. and If allowed to, in the right venue, this is a great art form. But left uncontrolled just vandalism and gang communication,

Question : what types of paints are best for painting a metal/tin trunk?
I'm planning to buy a brand new metal/ tin trunk to paint and design and am confused about using acrylics or oils. I'd prefer to use oils because it has more depth in making motif designs but the paints might erode the metal. So which are the best to use and how do i go about doing it?
Answer:
I'm thinking oils would be Better than acrylics because the oils won't corrode the metal like water soluble acrylics will. But there are tole paints for painting on metal; use those.

Question : How can I make acrylic paints stay on glossy ceramic?
I bought this cute little vase (it's glossy ceramic (finished)) and I drew little illustrations on it with acrylic paints. What can I use for the paint to stay on because it scratches off easily?
Answer:
It takes 3 weeks for acrylic paint to become fully hardened. Maybe it will be ok in a couple of weeks. I would hate for you to have to paint it over again. Try putting some gel or varnish over your paint and then wait for a couple of weeks.

Question : What paints could i use for paper marbling?
i want to experiment with the marbling technique.... but i dont want to splurge on marbling paints untill ive had more practice.i was wondering if anyone knew what other paints could be used for marbling.i have a supply of fabric, glas, acrylic, oil, ink and watercolour paints.which one would be best suited?and could i add anything to the paints to make them perform better?
Answer:
u can use normal artists oils, just thin them down with turps and a bit of oil if you have it. Get them nice and runny and they'll work fine. (float them on water)You should also be able to get marbling inks quite cheap. Best ones seem to be Japanese, in small 'squeezy' plastic bottles. The thick wallpaper glue technique mentioned above maybe something you get into later if you want to get more control over your designs. I wouldn't bother with it for starters.Have fun.

Question : What type of paints do I use for a canvas?
I want to paint my own canvas but not sure what kind of paints I should use on the canvas,no silly answers please, thank you.
Answer:
Since you'll be working on canvas, you will need to use a paint that is flexible after the painting is dry. That leaves you two choices: oil paint and acrylic paint. Acrylic paint will remain flexible for longer than oil in years to come, but in the short run, their flexiblity is comparable for about 10 years. Before painting with either paint, prime and prep your canvas first. You can either stretch your canvas onto stretcher bars, strainer bars or a board securing with staples or very good tape. Then prime your canvas with acrylic gesso. Apply at least two layers of gesso.I recommend you start with acrylics. It cleans up with water and is easier and less toxic to use. Start with five or so paint brushes of various sizes, a palette of red, blue, yellow, white and black, a big glass jar for holding water, paper towels and a palette to mix your colors on.
