Questions & Answers
Question : When do babies start scribbling with crayons?
I read on Baby Center that babies start scribbling with crayons around 12 months. My daughter is 13 months and most things still go into her mouth... especially paper.

Answer:
My daughter never took much of an interest till 15 months. She finally stopped attempting to eat random objects a month shy of 2yrs. But to this day (25 months) she still has a rough time coloring on paper . . she prefers random objects and walls. My son has a different temperament. He is very eager to learn and listen. So he stopped the whole sticking things in his mouth when he was approx. a year and was scribbling with crayons by 12 - 13 months.

Question : What are the best brand of wax crayons for children?
I am looking for smooth, good quality wax crayons for coloring in. We keep trying the different makes but they just go onto the page in lumps, and the children cannot make fine lines with them. What brands are popular? We used to get Crayola in South Africa but I can't find them anywhere.

Question : How do you screen print using litho crayons?
I know you can screen print by drawing directly on the screen with litho crayons, then you cover the entire screen with screen filler, but what do you do after that? Do you just let it dry and then print? Does ink go through the litho crayon? Or do you have to wash off the litho crayon? Thanks!

Question : What type of crayons to use for a toddler who likes to eat everything?
My son will be 17 months soon, and we have bought coloring books and crayons for him, however he keeps putting them in his mouth. On the package, it doesn't say anything about being toxic or non toxic as they are a very small 5 pack that came with the book. What sort of crayons do your children use? And are the washable ones really washable...?Also what about the markers that only write on certain paper? Are they pretty safe as well? Thanks for input!

Answer:
Crayola have some that are plastic with a bit of crayon at the bottom, they also wind up when they become blunt. They are short and fat and shaped funny so they are easy for toddlers to hold onto.

Question : How do melt crayons in a conventional oven?
I'm doing an art project with my niece this weekend and we want to use en-caustic, however, I am not sure of the best way to melt the crayons in my conventional oven. Should I put wax paper on a cookie tin or do something else? Also, what would the best temperature be? Thank you!

Answer:
You might try melting your crayons the same way that candle makers do. They use two pans, one for water in the bottom and the crayons or wax in the top one. Then they melt the wax with a thermometer inserted in the pot to check the temperature. You might check where you buy these supplies about the temperature. You can buy them at any art or craft store. If you use an oven, be sure to use metal containers to put the crayon in and only use a 350 temperature setting . You might also put the oven on bake. Try this at 5 minute intervals, opening and checking the containers. You might consider also putting the containers on some kind of metal cookie or pizza sheet. That way if the crayon gets too hot and spills over, it won't go in your oven. You might also use very stiff brushes to create the "en caustic" technique. There is also a simplier way for creating the "en caustic technique". Simply use a blow dryer to "melt" your crayons as you work. Draw directly with each "heated" crayon using the blow dryer. This is an easier method and works fairly well. No brushes are required and not much heat.

Question : How do you get crayons out of cloths?

My toddler have had a good time with crayons and one of our oil paintings now is a mess. Did someone had a similar problem?

Answer:

Question : Crayon shaving stained glass - How many crayons per child do you need to make?
I'm going to be setting up some arts and crafts for a whole bunch of kids and I want to do crayon stained glass with them but I don't know about how many crayons I would need per child (working on a specific budget). Each stained glass would be slightly smaller than a regular sheet of printer paper. Has anyone ever done this before and have a guesstimate on how many crayons I would need per child?
