Questions & Answers
Question : Which is the best value and most versatile card making gadget?
I am thinking of joining the craft club, but will only be able to afford one of the three gadgets on offer for joining. I am brand new to card making, and my attempts are currently rather haphazard. I have tried and like basic stamping but haven't got on to anything else yet. Those on offer are: xyron design runner (32.99)xyron x410 (19.99)sizzix sidekick starter kit (22.99)Can any experienced card makers out there recommend which of these is the best value and would be most versatile to me. Any pros and cons would be great. Also, do any of these gadgets require expensive upkeep in order to keep them useful.thanks for any help!

Answer:
I don't think any of them are very good for a beginner. The Sizzix is useful but you will want to keep buying new dies.I would advise you to spend your money on a Carl PRT100 trimmer instead. The different blades are still optional accessories but there are only a limited number ot them and you can ask for new ones as Christmas or birthday presents.

Question : How do you make crafting stamps at home?
I am an artist who has recently gotten into card making and I am having a really hard time finding specific stamps. I would like to make quality stamps at home (no carved potatoes). I also don't want to spend $500 on some machine or kit. Does anyone know if this is possible?? If it is, how would I do it?? Thank you for your help!!

Answer:
You can have quite detailed rubber stamps made online, or at rubberstamp companies in your area (if you live in an urban area, look in your yellow pages under Rubberstamp makers). And it's so fun that you may have found a new addiction :-). As an artist (or just a human being) it can be a whole new way to be creative and/or have some quite useful stamps for all kinds of purposes. There are various online companies that make stamps but I like the one called Ready Stamps (not Ready Stamp which is a different company) because all the money goes to the Cerebral Palsy Association and many of the workers are themselves disabled. They do a great job, it doesn't take very long, and it's quite inexpensive for what you can get back imo.I've written a bunch of info about them before including exactly what they offer, how much $$, etc., in at least one previous answer here, so just get the details from there:http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091226172225AAZWAbK(If that link ever doesn't work for some reason, you can get a lot of the same info and a link to them from here:http://polyclay.com/ready.htm )You might also want to check out the Stamping page at my site for more info on mounting your own stamps, etc., and that page plus the Molds page for info on using one of the things you'll get back (if you ask for it) as molds of your stamps to use with polymer clay or other clays, as well as other ways to "make your own stamps including stamps from polymer clay, "eraser carving," etc:http://glassattic.com/polymer/stamping.htmHTh, and have fun!Diane B.

Question : how can I make my own rubber stamps?
Where I can I buy the rubber stuff that you carve using spacial tools to make stamps? I have the tools, but can't find the rubber stuff... I checked local craft stores and they have the stuff, but only in the size about a 3x5" note card. I will need bigger. I've searched online and haven't had much luck finding the stuff. Also, I saw online a kit where you can design the image on your computer and then print the negative and somehow using Polymer it creates a stamp. I didn't really understand and they are asking $300 for it so I don't think so... lol But are there any kits cheaper like this? Do they work well? Finally can I use t-shirt ink on a stamp to stamp on fabric? Will it hurt the stamps at all?

Answer:
There are various ways you can make stamps yourself from flexible or stiff materials, and also some cheap ways to have your own stamps made.Art stores usually have various sizes of rubber or "linoleum" sheeting that can be carved with linoleum carving tools, or you can carve sheets of wood, polymer clay, white rubber erasers, foam plates, etc., then use those. You can also buy the materials to make your own "clear polymer" stamps (and some come in kits), but that's fiddly and gets expensive. There may be other kinds of kits too. However, you can have your own stamps made in just about any size, and almost any image. Look up Rubberstamp in the yellow pages and take your drawings to one of the shops that makes them, or office supply stores will usually make them too (though they'll usually be much more expensive).Personally, I like to have ReadyStamps.com make my stamps. They're pretty inexpensive and do a great job, and it supports the Cerebral Palsy Association. After you've drawn or printed out your images on a 9x7" sheet of paper (they may be able to do larger too) and sent that to them, they'll send back a rubber stamp sheet with your images on it. If you've put more than one stamp in your 9x7 area, you can cut the stamps apart. Thn you can mount them on anything you want--or leave unmounted. ReadyStamps will also send you the "molds" they used, if you ask for them, which can be great for polymer clay, etc. This page will tell you much more about ReadyStamps and give you a direct link:http://polyclay.com/ready.htmYou can also read more about making stamps from polymer clay (in various ways) and making stamps from some other materials too, on these pages at my site:http://glassattic.com/polymer/stamping.htmhttp://glassattic.com/polymer/carving.htmI'm not sure what "t-shirt ink" unless its the plasticizer/etc kind that's used for silkscreening (and those might not be good for rubber, but don't know). Various kinds of "fabric paint" can be used with rubber stamps though since they're water-based, though it's always good to clean stamps off before they sit around too long. HTH,Diane B.

Question : Frugal wedding tips- can you cut this budget for me?
Okaaay!I have the following left to pay for for the wedding that is September 6th.DJ- $200Minister-$200Marriage license- $100Bridal party gifts (4 of them) $150candy buffet (instead of favours) $150groomsmen golfing morning of wedding- $100wedding bands- $300clothing for our kids to wear to wedding- $125rehersal dinner night before for close family/friends- $250Hair/makeup- $100thank you cards for after wedding & shower- $40Rest of the catering bill- $400 (parents are paying other $3000)I am thinking about skipping getting my hair & makeup done and doing it myself. I am buying basic blank cards from a craft store and stamping my own thank you cards. We have a contract with the DJ otherwise we would just use a laptop for music... but we can't now. We're not handing out favours, but having a candy buffet. Buying candy in bulk, putting it in bowls and stamping white paper bags with our wedding colours and design. how can I cut down on bridal party gift costs? I paid for their dresses. I am really trying to keep their gifts at around $100, not the budgeted $150... was thinking about framing a nice picture of me with each of the girls and giving them as gifts, along with a mini spa kit (bath bombs, lotions, scrubs, etc).I just bought the dress for my daughter on clearance for $19- now my son needs khakis, a white golf shirt, and both kids need shoes. Was thinking about how to spend less on the rings- a brushed white gold/titanium/silver band for hubby, and a white gold band for myself. Where is the cheapest we can get them? Online is fine, as long as they will arrive on time.I also need to buy the following--tea lightsspool of raffiawhite paper bagsplacecards & bulletin board for place cardsmini plant pots with greenery in themtullegreen and chocolate brown ribbonsome fake green button mums or something similara big wreath form to make a wreath with the flowersany ways i can cut down these costs even more? I only have like $2000 TOPS for the rest of this! And what is the ettiquette on tipping the caterer/minister/dj?Thanks!

Answer:
You already bought the bridal party their dresses, so don't go overboard--go and buy them something simple and inexpensive like that mani/pedi kit.I personally wouldn't skimp on hair and make-up. This is a day to indulge yourself with something like that and it'll look great.See if you can cut the rehearsal dinner bill. Do something really simple and relaxed--dinner/bbq at your house or pizza. I have a friend who went bowling instead.Check out dollar stores and on-line for the rest of the stuff you need--you can get a deal...ebay is great for wedding stuff.

Question : What would you do with an email like this from your kid's stepmom?
My children, "Mary" 11 and "Joe" 14 have 2 months visitation across the country with their Dad & Step Mom. I just received this email after 2 1/2 weeks. What would you do?The girls and I just spent all morning cleaning their room and trying to organize all of their stuff today. "Mary" brought a lot of unnecessary things with her that are cluttering up their room and our home. For example, her own first aid kit, feminine pads, envelopes, stamps, toothpaste and such. All of these things we already have here in our home and there was no need for her to bring these things with her. To further complicate the clutter problem you keep mailing the kids packages. "Mary" just received a large package from you today in the mail full of stuff to make stuffed animals with. First of all, we already have an entire room of our home full of art, craft and school supplies, second of all the last thing "Mary" needs is another stuffed animal. We have 7 children here, 9 people in our home. There are three girls sharing a room together and it is literally crammed full of their belongings. There is no where left to put another thing unless we start hanging things from the ceiling. Our school room/art and craft room/dining room is packed full as well. So, please do not mail her anymore large items. We have plenty of our own books, (plus we go to the library once a week), and toys, beads, glue, fabric, googly eyes, paint, paper of all sorts, crayons, markers, chalk, oil pastels, acrylic paints, professional water paints, paint brushes, wood working projects, ceramic items to be painted, string, sewing supplies, things to make hair barrettes, pot holder makers, latch hook rug kits, etc, etc... We do not need anymore things like this. It adds to the clutter problem and it also creates a problem with the other children in the home when you are sending candy, books, and magazines to "Joe" and "Mary". It really is not fair to the other 5 children in our home. So, for those two reasons, please do not mail "Joe" and "Mary" anything bigger than a regular sized envelope. We've never had this problem in the past and I'd like to stop it from continuing to be a problem this summer. Thank you in advance for you cooperation and understandingFYI -- I have sent 2 packages. The first package had a manilla size envelope in it for each of my children -- 1 magazine each, 1 small box of nerds, and a small toy.The box today was for my daughter while her brother was at scout camp. It had a shoebox full of craft supplies and a book with patterns to make 2" high stuffed animals. Oh, yea. I also sent about 20-30 felt squares of a variety of colors to share with all th kids.Would it change anyone's view if they also knew that this same step-mom took the kids cell phones away from them when they arrived? And she makes them feel badly for wanting to call me? I am allowed to speak to them only every-other-day per court order, but Dad & Step mom think that is excessive.By the way -- great answers so far!

Answer:
Hmmm,I have to be honest with you,I started of thinking I was going to take your side, but as I read on I realized that the woman has a point. She is right about you showing preference to your kids by sending goodies to only them. The proper thing to do if you need to send Goodies send it to all the children. How would you feel to know that the step mom takes the children out but only buys stuff for her children though your children are present?I know what you are trying to do is to let your children know you are not far away, but remember they are with their dad.I know the woman is coming across as high minded and smugand that it is not her role to be talking to you about your children,it is your ex job,but try not to make it any harder for the children.I take issue with 2 things.Talking about the children bringing clutter into her home is rude and insensitive, and I hope she is not saying it to them.If she needs to complain about the kids she needs to do it through their father.Send the email to your ex with the points are made here and let him know you are concerned for the kids.Don't worry 2 months come by so fast they will be home soonaddendum. The woman has no right to take your children's cell phones.Let your lawyer send your husband a letter asking him to return the children's property, failing which you haul both their as**s to court.I am sorry to go this far but your husband looks spinless from here.
