Questions & Answers
Question : Crafts/Scrapbooking websites, products?
I want to make a scrapbook for lots of things, like holidays, events, or travels. i don`t know what i need and i don`t know how to make it. if you don`t want to explain that then could you find out where i can buy a scrapbooking kit. my friend has an All About Me scrapbook does anybody no about that or any other scrapbooking books or kits?thanks a bunch
Answer:
For scrapbooking, try and see if your local craft store offers classes and take a couple to learn the basics about scrapping. It will help you and give you confidence. You wnat to buy archival products - things free of acid, lignin, etc. This will allow your book to last and not deterioriate or yellow over time. Products in the scrapbooking aisle will say these things on the package. For starters, get a scrapbook that you like. I tend to get ones with plain covers as I want them to have a similar look on my bookshelf but the option is yours. I also like using 12" x 12" books as this allows for a lot of items on one page, but again the choice is yours. As you go, you will learn what you like.Items you need to begin: these are some basic tools that are good to start out with. Do not go overboard and start simply. You can add tools as you go.-12" paper trimmer-scissors-adhesive (photo squares, tape runner, etc... Get what you like. I start out with photo squares as they work on everything and you can cut them up to save $$)-background paper in the size of your book (I buy these when they go on sale - at JoAnn's right now the 12" is on sale for 5 for $1)-card stock (I usually buy a pack in various colors)-pensThese tools will get you started. You basically pick a background paper and the photos you want to go on it. If it's a 12" sheet I try to get 3 or 4 photos on it.I trim or "crop" my picture. Do this by looking at your picture and cutting out the unnecessary stuff out of it.I adhere it to a matte. This is cardstock from my pack that is usually 1/4" larger than my photo.I then place and attach my photos to the background paper. I also add a journal box. This is a piece of cardstock that I have written on to say what the page is about. There are many ways to construct a page. You can add stickers, embellishments...really anything. The sky is the limit. I tend to like simpler pages as it is cheaper and doesn't feel too cluttered to me. It's really your personal preference. As you get better, you will see what you like. You can also look on the internet for sample layouts to help you build your page. I also like to create my own embellishments out of my cardstock. For example, I make candy corn to add to autumn pages, stocking for Christmas, etc.You can buy scrapbooking products at Wal Mart, Target, JoAnn's, Michael's, the dollar stores and your local craft stores. Maybe you can get together with a friend or two and you can learn and share together. You can buy kits of paper, stickers, etc already in a pack. This helps you build pages quickly but cost more than buying the items separately.Good luck!

Question : How do I let go of the 9-5 world to do what I love which is creating?
I just recently started scrapbooking at a local store. The ladies go nuts over my ideas and buy what I buy. I make kits and they sell out but I don't have enough money to make this full time or am I just to scared to take the risk. I used to sew purses in High School and sold them like hot cakes I tried a few craft shows after that and nothing happened so I strayed away from that.
Answer:
Start slow. Keep that 9-5, until you are comfortable to leave it. I have always tried to make my crafting hobbies an extra source of income, but attending shows, buying the materials & the time put into each project, has made me keep my mundane job to pay the bills. Create a website to sell, use eBay, etc., and monitor the flow......a good way to see how long the interest may be. Enjoy!

Question : What can we do at my birthday party?
A few things:1) There are 5 girls including me and I am having a sleepover. Pizza is for dinner. Presents, dinner, cake will keep us busy for awhile, but I want something to do.2)PLEASE I do not want a big elaborate party where we have a craft station, a beauty station, a runway room, etc. I hate these parties where there is so much to do! Usually, they just kind of bore me. Strange I know, but I just want one or two fun things for us to do together.3) I recently had oral surgery, and can't chew. We have to cut up my pizza so that I can just swallow it!!! So, if you give cooking ideas, keep that in mind please.4) One of my friends is a diabetic. She is pretty good about giving herself insulin and knowing what not to eat, but if she gets too many sweets at once, it is not good.5) Two of my friends are not allowed to have caffeine (except for the little bit in chocolate) because of their religion.6) I don't want to say my age, but please don't give me pin-the-tail on the donkey ideas, or 6-year-old games. Not that pin-the-tail on the donkey is one, I just don't really like those types much.7) Limited budget people!!! I'm not poor, but I ain't livin' in a mansion or anything.8) Anything is fine, but I was thinking things like cooking, crafts (like scrapbooking type things, I don't like all of the jewelry making kits and stuff), games9) We can't leave my house because there is not enough room in my mom's car. We can go outside, but because of my surgery, I can't do anything where I could possibly get hurt (soccer, basketball, tag, anything like that).10) Don't suggest things like putting shaing cream on the people's faces please.thanks matt. and to the other guy, why do you say, "is that a joke?" sorry if it was so long, i just had a lot to sayto karissa:although i must admit, it is hard not to sometimes, it really isn't a Christian thing to do. me and my really close friends do talk about things a lot like things that people did that hurt our feelings, but we don't just sit and say, "she is such a..." we say stuff like, "she was acting pretty mean."plus, not to mention, one of the girls goes to my Church, and i know that she would not want to. plus she doesn't go to my school so she doesn't know all of this stuff.when i said she doesn't know all this stuff, i meant she doesn't know the people who we would gossip about anyway.
Answer:
when i have a sleep over with my friends i like to play truth or dare or just talk about something you all have in common. the key to a good party is knowing when your guests are getting bored of the conversation. also have some snacks to munch on.

Question : What are some good arts and crafts items for a 9-year-old girl?
I have selected my Angel Tree kid, and she likes jewelry making kits and arts and crafts items. What types of things are age-appropriate? (I don't have kids, so I don't know these things.) I'm guessing that she's too old for crayons and safety scissors! What about activity books, sticker books, or even coloring books? I want to get some general supplies like drawing paper and construction paper, too. Oh, and she likes scrapbooking stuff. Is a prefab kit made for kids good, or should I go to Hobby Lobby and get her some real stuff? The last two years have been easy because I selected girls who were the same age as my little cousins, so I had a general idea of what they liked. But this year I'm a little lost. I don't want to get things that are too young for her that will make her feel like a baby. On the other hand, I don't want to spend a lot of money on "real" stuff that will be too old for her. Thanks in advance for your help! Hopefully some parents or teachers of kids this age can help!
Answer:
I wouldn't get scrapbooking stuff for a child from an angel tree because her family may not not have the money for additional supplies or even for her to print out photos to complete the project.9 is beyond sticker, activity and coloring books, she's ready for the real stuff. She's at a good age for needlework like crochet, knitting, cross stitch, weaving, sewing or even latch hook. You could put together some supplies and some instructional books. You could also put together art supplies along with some instructional books on drawing techniques and some sketch books.Prefab kits are nice because everything is included, but they're not always as good of a deal as getting the supplies separately. I saw a headband making kit recently for $20 and it contained about $5 worth of plain headbands and maybe $5 of ribbons. Jewelry making kits are usually a good deal but make sure to include a pair of needle nose pliers because most kits assume you have a pair and she may not.

Question : I'm making a my best friend a scrapbook for her birthday, but i need some help!?
i'm really good at crafts and i love to make things for people, but i have never been good at scrapbookingi'm not patient enough to do them lol!I am going to buckle down thoughbecause i have a bajillion pictures of me and my best friendand i know that she would love something like a scrapbook for her birthday and i already have a ton of scrapbooking pages, stickers, ribbons, decorations, and ect.I have a couple of questions thougha) should i use the stuff i already have or should i go buy a kit at hobby lobby or walmart that way everything is cute and matching and flowing plus it's easier on me to put everything together since it is brand new and nice and organizedor should i use the stuff i already have and just go out and buy an album?b) how many pictures are usually on one page?c) i was thinking like 10 pages, is that enough or to little?d) in general is it cheaper to print the pictures at walmart or to buy the paper and print them at home i have about 30 picture in all
Answer:
a) You should just use the ones u already have because u said that u have a lot and plus u dont need to waste money!b) It depends on how big your page is. you could try and fit 3 photosc) It really depends on how many photos you have but i think 10 pages is enough.d) I suggest you to print it out so its easier to stick on! but its your choice

Question : Any inspiration or advice for handmade wedding invitations?
I am getting married in June and am thinking of making my own wedding invitations. I would like to make them myself using paper, glue, watercolor, ribbons, etc. -- not a pre-made print-at-home kit. I would probably print the invitation text on vellum and then affix it somehow to the decorated paper. I haven't done a lot of scrapbooking or paper crafting before, so I would appreciate any advice you have for me.Do you know of any websites that tell one how to do this?Do you have links to any pictures that could inspire me?Have you done this before? Do you have any good advice? Thanks for your help!
Answer:
There are tons of ideas out there! First start looking at different invitations and get an idea of what you like. Then you can buy the paper and supplies, and lastly lay it all out. A website which I use frequently and recommend often is paper-source.com.Go to how to > videos > and watch their videos onpetal invitation, pocket folder invitation, and program kits just to get ideas. Before you decide on your final measurements and materials, be sure to do a thorough test run. You may find that vellum doesnt work well for your printer, and card stock does, or vice versa. Printing is where most problems arise, so sort this out first.Expect these to take a great deal of your time to complete- they will! But if you enjoy it and have patience, they will be beautiful.Ill attach a pic of our invitations. We got a lot of compliments on them. I used Japanese washi paper and gold cords to tie the front, to incorporate my husband's culture. Inside, I designed and printed the invitation, map, and RSVP card.Good luck and have fun with your invitations!http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z45/fizzystuff/IMG_4322.jpghttp://i195.photobucket.co m/albums/z45/fizzystuff/IMG_4323.jpg

Question : Best Craft/Scrapbooking Kits?
My SIL is graduating High School this year, and she would like a nice craft/scrapbooking kit to take with her to college. Any suggestions about a pre-fab kit or what to include as essentials in one?
Answer:
You can get awesome kits on qvc.com, they have coordinated kits with all the paper, accents, and everything you need to put together scrapbooks, including the albums. You get TONS for your money there. What to include in a kit would be:Albumacid free cardstock and some paperacid free adhesiveacid free accents, stickers, die cuts, etcacid free penspaper trimmer and scissorsrulerAlphabet stickers/embellishmentsI would find out if she wants to scrapbook in the size of 12x12 or 8 1/2 by 11, that will help you know what size album and paper to get. If you buy a kit from qvc, you will pay about $30 for everything, where in a store, it could cost you way more for a lot less, where qvc gives you over ONE THOUSAND pieces for that price, you can't buy fifty pieces for that price in a craft or scrapbook store. It's worth it to shop with qvc for their scrapbooking, you can go to their website and type in scrapbooking and it will bring up a page and it will show you kits. I would go with one of them. They are put together by the leaders in the industry and you can't go wrong with them. You can go to AC Moore and Michael's and buy an album and some paper and carstock with some accents and pens, adhesive, etc, and put together your own kit for her too. I'm sure whatever you choose to do she'll love.

Question : Do they make 3-ring 12x12 scrapbook (all-in-one) kits?
I'm new to scrapbooking. I went to a craft store today and was looking around to see what I would like. I decided that I like the 3-ring 12x12 scrapbook albums. I also saw some kits that have all the supplies to get started (the "all in one" kits). However, I only saw these kits for the post-bound albums. Do they make these kits for the 12x12 three-ring albums? Ideally, I want my kids to help with the scrapbooking because it is for their pictures from school. Thanks!
Answer:
My wife bought 3-ring 12" x 12" photo binders at Wal-Mart last year.
|
Question : Scrapbooking- should I convert to 12x12?
Okay, so I have been buying the 20 dollar scrapbooking kits at walmart because I like the binder- it is just a 3 ring binder- and it comes with paper and stuff. But, when I want to buy paper at the craft store they really only carry 12x12. They have some 8 1/2 x11 but not much. So, here is what is stopping me. There are only postbound albums. I have only had one, but it seemed like the pages were hard to open, they wouldnt lay flat. What works well? WHat have you tried?ps- I am not really into this. I do holidays and vacations and such. I make about 50 pages a year. I am not super into embellishments and such.
Answer:
I used to teach scrapbooking at Michaels and what I recommended to most people is buy the 12 by 12 post bound scrap book but them for like $4.00 you can get a snap load adapter kit. The posts are unstable especially when you extend them but the snap load is essentially a plastic piece looking similar to a flattened zip tie that makes changing pages and binding your book super simple!

Question : What is the best way to learn creative scrapbooking? Is there a website or classes in the Philadelphia area?
I have seen some absolutely beautiful scrapbooks full of photographs. I have gone to the craft store and bought some scrap booking kits. I am wondering what are the die-cuts for and how to use them? What are essential items to purchase to be successful in scrap booking? I have the basics such as books, paper and embellishments.
Answer:
Try finding a scrapbook store in your area. Most will have classes. They will demo products for you. going to a crop will let you see what others are doing and what products they use. It is a good way to socialize and meet other scrappers. You do need a good paper trimmer, Fiskars is a good brand.check out www.sizzix.com for die cuts, and ideas for them.
