Question : What kind of clay do i need to use if i am not using a kiln but want to fire my clay in a fire pit?
I don't want my pots to crack or explode or anything I just want to know what clay will bake at the right temperature so that it will work. any tips on this and building the fire correctly will help. thanks in advance!

Answer:
There are several types of clays that should hold up well, terracotta, raku actually just about any clay would work as long as they are completely dried out before firing. But with Pit Firings there is a certain amount of breakage to be expected. Generally in situations of large scale production (businesses} using Pit Firing techniques they will over produce to compensate for any loss which they know that they will have. It is only with small firings (amounts) that the process seems hazardous. Also be aware that generally Pit Firings will not achieve the very high temperatures that one would expect from a closed kiln firing. But as with anything the more experience one has with a process the more they learn and are able to make corrections. Since I do not care for most glazes I prefer the look of scorch marks and such obtained from alternative firing methods. Do look into Saggar techniques as well. Also there is Terra Sigalatta to consider!!!! Here are some links:Pit Firing:http://www.google.com/search?hl=&q=pit+firings&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B3GGLL_enUS383US384 &ie=UTF-8Saggar Firing:http://www.google.com/search?hl=&q=Saggar+firing&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B3GGLL_enUS383US3 84&ie=UTF-8Terra Sigalatta:http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rlz=1B3GGLL_enUS383US384&&sa=X&ei=3fRKTJGcJMP-8AaatdEz& ved=0CBEQBSgA&q=Terra+Sigillata&spell=1

Question : Clay?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
My 13 year old daughter wants clay that can Harden by the oven and she said she wants tomake bowls, cups, and other things like that and she wants it to harden??!!! Help!!And Also she wants the bowls to be usable!!We Don't have a kiln

Answer:
To make bowls and cups that would be usable - she really needs a class in ceramics or potteryThis wil provide a source for materials and a way to have pieces fired in a ceramic kilnSome of the tools would be best to try in a class before buying them because they are expensive. Also safety procedures should be learned from a teacher. Here is a partial list of places offering ceramic classeshttp://ceramicartsdaily.org/education/classes/Ask your daughter to help you check out classes. The art teacher at her school may be able to direct you..Your daughter may have fun

Question : clay????????
i really want to know how to make clay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!how do u make clay????????????????????????????plzzzzzz tell me

Answer:
You really can't "make" clay. You can buy it, or in certain areas the ground is full of it.You can make various sorts of doughs that are more like play-dough, if that's what you're looking for. I found a bunch of recipes at http://www.teachnet.com/lesson/art/playdough061699.html and http://babyparenting.about.com/cs/activities/a/playdough.htm

Question : What is the best clay to use for beginning pottery throwers?
I am trying to find a good clay that works well with begginers learning to throw pottery. I have tried a few but they were so hard that i could barely mold the clay. Any suggestions??

Answer:
I hope you are taking a class. When you buy clay each bag as a different amount of moistureWedging the clay with a spray bottle handy can soften the clay someThe idea is spraying a little water at a time will help soften some clayThere are other techniques like putting water in the bag and waiting a weekThis can make the clay too soft or with uneven moisture Wedging and sitting out - A fan can also speed dryingAre you going to a ceramic supply? They can tell you other techniquesWorking with clay means you will always be altering the moisture content

Question : What animal should I make my clay whistle sculpture in art?
I have never used clay before, so I need an easy clay animal to make.I must make a whistle out of clay and then turn it into an animal. For example, somebody made a whistle and then sculpted a dragon around it. You blow into its tail and the whistle sound comes out of its mouth. If you don't get it, just tell me some animals that will be easy to make out of clay. I think it will be approximately 12cm long.

Answer:
a cat or a turtle. a snail would be pretty easy too since snails are somewhat shaped like a whistle anyway

Question : What type of clay is good for claymation movies?
What type of clay is good for making a claymation movie for my video broadcasting class? I need to make two people talking, an alien and a regular human. My question is What type of clay is best for this, and Where can I get that type of clay?

Answer:
I can't think of the name right off the top of my head but crayola products have this forming clay that doesn't dry out and you can form into anything. It comes in all colors you will normally see it in little coils packed in packages.

Question : What is the best clay product to create some characters with for play?
I produce internet videos and want to use clay characters. Does anyone know a favorite clay, similar to play-doh but for adults?

Answer:
if you want to do claymation you will need an oil based clay so it doesn't dry out but stays flexible. So you would need some plasticine clay. Depending on size you might need a metal armature inside. Claymation figures like Wallace and Gromit are made out of plasticine. Some people prefer special brands, but if you just want to start you can try out the cheap ones for kids. You can probably find some at walmart.
