Questions & Answers
Question : How to get pastel artist chalk off my hands?
I got these pastel chalk sticks today and when I was using them, the chalk got all over my hands. Now this isn't like school chalk. Its thick and oily and the more water I use the more it smears. I've also tried hand sanitizer, but it doesn't work.

Answer:
There are a few brands of abrasive liquid soap that are perfect for removing oily pastel (and oil paints and just about any sort of art media) from the skin. Pumice is used as a mild abrasive to release the bits that tend to get stuck in the grooves of your hands. Gojo Orange and Lava are the two brands that come immediately to mind, though I'm pretty sure any pumice soap will work. The liquid soaps are available at stores like Home Depot and Lowe's and you can find pumice bar soap (including Lava) at just about any grocery store. They're what mechanics use to get the grease and dirt out from under their fingernails.

Question : What gas is produced when chalk is combined with hydrochloric acid?
When a piece of chalk is in a beaker and 45mL of hydrochloric acid is added what gas is produced? Also, if you know the chemical formula for this reaction that would be great. Thanks :)

Answer:
Chalk is calcium carbonate(CaCO3).Hydrochloric acid is given by HCl.When a metal carbonate reacts with an acid carbon-di-oxide is produced.CaCO3 + 2HCl = CaCl2 + CO2 + H2O

Question : How do I keep a chalk drawing from smearing?
I just completed a chalk drawing, and I'm trying to keep it from smearing. I tried this can of Krylon Workable Fixatif I got at Walmart, but the chalk still comes off when I put my finger on it. I also tried hairspray, but it just makes the drawing look blotchy, and the chalk STILL smears. What can I do?

Answer:
I know the perfect remedy. Try this hairspray,... "Beyond the Zone Pro Formula", Frozen Stiff 24/7 Freez'N'Hold ultimate hair spray. It's a tall purple can with a dark purple top and smells good too, although I don't use it for my hair, heh heh.. It's not cheap stuff either, you can find it at beauty supply stores like Sally's (store) not WAL-MART, bluegh! I never buy art stuff from there. Oh and don't spray your artwork with the spray too close to the picture, go about 12 inches away and spray a mist over the work, repeat if you feel you have to. Now with this spray you can run your hand over the work and nothing will happen! Hm, fixative never works for me too.

Question : Can you take chalk on an international flight?
I am planning on going to guatemala and the kids there don't have chalk to play with and i wanted to take some, but is it allowed?

Answer:
Sure is!

Question : How do I get chalk stain out of a wool suit jacket?
My boyfriend bought a new suit for a party that is in four days. He had it altered and when we picked it up, there were still chalk marks on the jacket. Is it okay to use a damp cloth? It's 100% wool. Any other suggestions? We only have a few days! Thanks!

Answer:
there are these sponges special for cleaning granulated dirt. you just rub it on. found it at the hypermarket. they also clean up marks left by your powder, or dust, should also get chalk off ;)

Question : How do I remove car chalk from the garage door?
Kids painted car chalk on the garage door, I used Simple Green and it's better, but I can still see the blue paint , faintly. Is there a better product to use for a surface like this, or I pretty much left with the good ol' elbow grease?

Answer:
Maybe repaint that part of the garage door, but simple green is the best solution

Question : How can you make chalk that can be used to write on blackboards? What are the procedures and materials?
What are the procedures and materials? The chalk should be able to write well in blackboards. Please explain.

Answer:
The mineral chalk is calcium carbonate, but blackboard chalk is actually gypsum, hydrated calcium sulphate, CaSO4.2H2O, because calcium carbonate is a little bit too crumbly. Here is what Wikipedia says:From Wikipedia article on "Chalk": Although traditionally composed of natural chalk, modern blackboard chalk is generally made from the mineral gypsum (calcium sulfate), often supplied in sticks of compressed powder about 10 cm long.I should imagine that small amounts of starch or some similar binder is also used, to make the particles stick together.

Question : How to stop ants getting inside my home with chalk?
Hello. Years ago (l'm talking the 80's) l remember my Nan drawing a line of chalk around the front door or across the pavement to the door to stop the ants going into the house. They could never get over the chalk and would turn away. Being naughty kids we used to draw a circle around the ants and watch them run around in confusion because they couldn't get out!. Anyway, my parents have suddenly been invaded tonight by ants (must be the warm weather in the UK at the mo') and we thought of the chalk thing - but this time it didn't work!. The ants are walking all over the chalk - l think maybe a ingredient that was in chalk years ago has been taken out, or ants are stronger nowadays?!. Anyone know of anything except bug spray that can stop them wandering in my house?? Thanks!

Answer:
the asian stores have an insecticide chalk that kills any ant that comes close to it!! my wife is from the phillipinines and only used this until she got used to our spray cans and stuff,, but she still uses the chalk alot many local stores are starting to carry it now

Question : What is the deal with weightlifting chalk?
I am currently trying to bench press 300 pounds which will be a personal best for me. I want some chalk for the day I try the lift but I am confused when I search online. It seems chalk can range anywhere from a few bucks to a lot more. I need some buds that put up the pounds to tell me what is the best brand- regardless of anything else.

Answer:
I am not trying to sell you anything.. but there is a glove/pad I have been using that rock.. they have great grip and are thick so it really helps grabbing the bar.. I have been using them for about a year and they are killer... they look a little funny.. but trust me.. they work.. heck they have a money back guarantee...www.newgrip.comafter you order them email them and tell you chris stewart sent you and they might hook you up... or if there is a place to put that when you order try that... trust me.. the are great! and you will get 300 no problem.. hey really take the strain off your hands and help focus on the weight.. not the pain on your hands..

Question : How do i remove chalk from drawing paper?
Ive created a drawing i created with pencil that i decided to highlight with chalk (small, thin pieces of sidewalk chalk) but i put too much chalk in a certain area. How can i take out the chalk without ruining the drawing?

Answer:
Get a thin putty rubber - they're used for charcoal and so work on chalk too as they are desinged to pick up the dust. Do NOT use one of those hard school rubbers - they'll damage the paper and leave it all bally and possibly ripped if you go too hard. You can get putty rubbers in any arts and craft store and in some school shops. They're also very inexpensive and work like a charm :)
