Fusing the spirit of punk rock with traditional Irish folk music, Shane MacGowan and the Pogues created a distinctive musical style and influenced such modern alternative heroes as Dropkick Murphys and the Real McKenzies. MacGowan's songwriting and distinctive vocals have created some great music, both in the studio and live. This fantastic double CD brings you the best of both The Pogues' worlds. Disc 1 features 22 classic singles and album tracks including 'Irish Rover' (with The Dubliners), 'A Pair Of Brown Eyes', 'White City, 'London Girl', 'Fiesta', their unique rendition of Ewan MacColl's 'Dirty Old Town' and 'Fairytale Of New York', which features the incomparable vocal talents of the late Kristy MacColl (Ewan's daughter!). Disc 2 showcases The Pogues live in concert, recorded at the legendary Brixton Academy in 2001. This second disc features an additional 22 blistering performances including 'Turkish Song Of The Damned', 'Sally Maclennane', 'Young Ned Of The Hill' and 'The Sickbed of Cuchulainn' among others. Two discs featuring 44 tracks in all. Warner.

Customer Review :

Great collection from one of the best Irish groups around...

This is a two-disk set comprised of a greatest hits volume and a live CD. Both are very good engineering and the pair is worth the price.

If you saw "PS I love you" you heard the best song of this collection, "Fairytale of New York" was played at the wake and not released on the soundtrack of the movie. Kirsty MacColl is simply an amazing singer and this is one of the best of a wonderful set of songs from both the 'best' and the live' CDs. I'd normally gripe about a repeat, but how can you?

"The Irish Rover" with the Dubliners is another highlight of the live set. The recording was made at Brixton Academy and that's one live set I wish I could have attended! Great engineering, too, for a live CD.

One Band Two Versions

First, this is a very good Irish band doing both standards and newer songs. Much of their new work is hard-edged, gritty but very honest. They are a very talented group with a voice that you do not want to ignore. This CD is an excellent example of their best work providing two different but similar versions of songs. This duplication is one of the strongest reasons to purchase this set, CD 1 is the studio version, CD 2 is a live performance. You instantly understand the value of having the two songs in one set as you hear the differences in presentation.

On CD 1, The Irish Rover is performed with The Dubliners. This is almost worth the price of the set, being one of the best and most rousing renditions of this song. Fairytale of New York, featuring Kristy MacColl, is one of the bands best songs. The CD two versions are not equal to but are still worth hearing. The rest of the duplicated songs will showcase their talents as a live band, giving you the feel of being there.

The Clancy Brothers, The Irish Rovers, The Dubliners, The Chieftains and The Coors have all drawn on and contributed to the music of Ireland. These contributions have produced an electric lively interesting sound. The Pogues are building on this heritage and expanding the sound. This is a band with something to say and is worth hearing! They have a sound that is a combination of Irish music and punk rock that attracts and beguiles.

This is the One to Get

If you are a Pogues fan, or you have just found out about them and want to check them out, this is the CD to get. You not only get the accomplished studio versions of some of their greatest hits, but you get the raw, rowdy versions from a live show. And, man, are the Pogues a great band to see life. Saw them in DC and NY this March and they were great as ever. The band is as tight as it gets and Shane, bless his heart, still does the job in his boozy, wobbly way. Get the CD and see them when you can.

Poor Sound Quality

I hate to be the dissenting voice here, but the sound quality on this album just doesn't have the same warmth as that on The Very Best of the Pogues. On the compilation CD, it's overproduced and sounds as though the mixer wanted to emphasize MacGowan's lyrics at the expense of the instruments. The vocals on the studio version of "Young Ned of the Hill," not by MacGowan, are nearly indecipherable.

The live album has its ups and downs. On the first several tracks, one of the stringed instruments has something wrong with its feed and sounds like randomly occurring electronic noise by comparison with the rest of the music. When I first heard the CD, I was so startled that I'd assumed my phone was ringing. Oddly enough, though, on the live album "Young Ned of the Hill" comes out splendidly. "Fairytale of New York" is good, but Kirsty MacColl did it better (not that there's anything that can be done about this). One of my favorites, "If I Should Fall from Grace with God," comes out abysmally.

As for the track choices, I'd have liked to have had the studio version of "Turkish Song of the Damned" added and "Fiesta" or "Summer in Siam" removed, but so be it.

Overall, the album's not bad; the sound quality's just lacking that extra "something" present on The Very Best of the Pogues.

Ultimate Collection Disc 3?

A great collection here. I already have all the disc 1 tracks on other Pogues CDs, but this collection was still worth it if only for the live CD. But having so many of their great studio recordings in one place on disc 1 is pretty convenient. I do have to agree with a previous review that the studio tracks on disc 1 are not really perfect sound quality. The same tracks on the remastered studio albums sound slightly brighter and better listened to side-by-side.

Of course, The Pogues had enough great songs that this collection could have had another CD of their studio stuff. So I recorded my own Ultimate Collection Disc 3 CD from tracks I have on their remastered, extended studio CDs. This combined with the collection disc 1 & 2 mean I rarely feel the need to dig out their other CDs. Here's the studio tracks I included on my "Ultimate Collection Disc 3":

Auld Triangle
Band Played Waltzing Matilda, The [long version]
Bottle Of Smoke
Broad Majestic Shannon, The
Danny Boy
Dark Streets of London

Visually entertaining and beautiful

"How to be" is charming and engaging for a child to read and discover acting like different animals, but still being a kid. Lisa Brown follows two children (brother and sister) as they transition from the beach/lake to going home. Each animal has a different color and at the end she blends them all into one theme. I recently had the fortune of listening to Ms. Brown speak at a children' writers conference. She brings a unique sense of character to each of her books. I look forward to reading more of her books.

Springboard to poetry

I shared this book with my eighth graders as we were discussing families. Each student wrote a poem about how to be the ___ family. We put these in a booklet that each student gets to take home and share with his or her family. It's a wonderful book to use as a springboard to writing poetry and talking about a variety of topics.

Great Primary Book

This is an excellent book to use with students K-2 when teaching sequence and transtions.

Children learn about animals and themselves as a people and individuals.

"How to Be" is a book that teaches and entertains at the same time. Lisa Brown cleverly uses the various traits of different animals to show children good qualities in people. The book takes children through `how to be' seven different animals - with the seventh being humans. The illustrated title pages give children an opportunity to think about each featured animal and then tell what they know about the animal's behaviors. Then, when they turn the pages, they get to see if they were right. Lisa Brown's humorous and thought provoking illustrations are another source of entertainment for children while they learn about animals and themselves as a people and individuals. My four-year-old granddaughter loves the illustrations of children acting out each animal's behavior. She also enjoys when the children and animals join together in the "How to be a Person" section. This is a good read-together book. However, the simple and entertaining illustrations also make it a book that children can enjoy looking at alone.

A Sweet Moral Message

This book has very simple pictures and text. It gives a good lesson at the end on what it means to be a good person and being yourself. Saw this on "Between the Lions" on PBS and had to buy it.

All That A Field Guide Promises and More

I found this Hip Pocket Guide, by David Arora, to be helpful for bringing hunting. This is one of those books that will probably fit into the pockets of most fungi foragers. The title is apparently an accurate one, but applies elsewhere geographically. I noticed many fungi from the Great Lakes Bio-region are present on the pages as well, with all color images, edibility index, and replete with their Latin names. Scan this book and you may come across a short story of a favorite mushroom hunt contributed by a friend of the author. There are even cooking suggestions. Also, have you seen the cover photo? This book is great for the field, but by no means the most extensive reference on fungi identification.

Fungus Amoung Us

This is an excellent book for people just beginning their journey into mushroom adoration. It is simple, colorful and filled with hilarious stories about people and the mushrooms that they find. Once you have become familiar with this book, Mushrooms Demystified, also by David Arora, is a natural and recommended progression.

Mushroom Hunting made much easier

This book is a great field guide when foraging. Recently, we went to a mushroom identification class at Point Reyes National Seashore and I noticed almost everyone had this book in their arsenal of mushroom hunting books. I have since purchased the author's more detailed book, which is better for identifying finds one you get back home.

Best Little Field Guide in print

When you start exploring mushrooms there are so many "guides" and so much information out there you'll get a migraine trying to find something that works for you.

This little book is fun, practical, interesting - best little book I found. If you are new to this "culinary" sport - start here - you won't be disappointed. If you are experienced, well - you'll enjoy this one too.

I have to order another one of this because my best friend saw it on my table, looked through it and begged to borrow it. I know how that will turn out - he'll never want to give back. Lesson - buy 2, not one. - Laugh

Yea, it's that good.

Fun and very helpful

I bought this book at the Fort Ross State Park bookstore, and 20 minutes later was hiking in the rain at Salt Point. A mile up the trail I came across Belly Button Hedgehogs--which this book very clearly described. Now, I had never gathered mushrooms that I then ate, because of being worried about misidentification. Not only did this book help me get past that (at least with the hedgehogs), but it provided a great recipe! The next evening I cooked up a very delicious dish for three, which we all enjoyed immensely. I'll be going back to Salt Point, and this book will come along with me...in fact, it will come along with me on my frequent walks in my neighborhood.

Question : What would be the best camera to buy
I just have a regular Kodak Easyshare 10MP digital camera right now. It is a nice camera, but it is really hard to get good night pictures without all of the pictures turning out blurry. I love taking pictures and am saving up for a nice Nikon or Canon ( in a few years). But as for right now I'd like just a simple digital camera that can take good pictures all around. Can anyone help me with the best kind Nikon Coolpix, Sony Cybershot, Olympus, Canon

Answer:
you can consider Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH20 14.1 MP Digital Camera with 8x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_nossurl=search-alias%3Delectronics&tag=cameradeals-01-20&field-ke ywords=Panasonic+Lumix+DMC-FH20+&x=0&y=0&ih=1_0_0_0_0_0_0_0_0_1.183_6&fsc=-1Canon PowerShot SD960IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_nossurl=node%3D330405011&tag=cameradeals-01-20&field-keywords=sd9 60&x=0&y=0Canon PowerShot SD780IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCDhttp://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1ff3=4&pub=5574865779&toolid=10001&campid=533668 9170&customid=camera&mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fphotography.shop.ebay.com%2FDigital-Cameras-%2F31388%2Fi.html %3F_nkw%3DCanon%2BPowerShot%2BSD780IS%26_catref%3D1%26_dmpt%3DBatteries_Chargers%26_fln%3D1%26_trksi d%3Dp3286.c0.m282

Question : How to fix all the 'Portable Devices' in System Manager/Computer Management
all of my family's ipods, cameras, etc have exclamation marks in by their names under 'portable devices' in system manager. to get here, start>run> type in %SystemRoot%system32compmgmt.msc /s ;;; my computer won't recognize my camera. the ipods all work but my camera won't automatically upload all the pictures. HELP

Answer:
Try turning the camera on when you connect it to your computer. If it doesn't work, the camera probably needs an updated driver for your Windows operating system. If you don't have it, you can use search engines like bing.com, google.com or yahoo.com. Just type in your camera brand and model name plus the word "driver".There is another way though. You can remove the memory card from your camera and plug it in a card reader connected to your computer.Good luck
