Questions & Answers
Question : What ultracompact digital cameras have decent quality optical viewfinders?
What ultracompact digital cameras have decent quality optical viewfinders?
Answer:
Pentax has really great small cameras. Many of the new ones use only the screen on the back, but some have a view finders. I have had several (I am a junky for new stuff) Pentax cameras and they take amazing photos and they are very compact (S series fit inside an Altoids tin). Great cameras.

Question : How important is the viewfinder on a digital camera?
I'm shopping for a new digital camera, and all the models that interest me have no viewfinder, "LCD only." This seems like it might be a problem, since if the LCD screen breaks, or there is a glare on the screen, it will be difficult to line up a good shot. How important is the viewfinder on a digital camera, and why do so many compact and subcompact cameras have LCD only, rather than a viewfinder and and LCD like the other cameras I've owned? Do you have any suggestions for a good camera under $400 with good shutter lag?
Answer:
Not important. You will not use it. The only time it may be helpful is when you are outside and the sun is so bright you can't see your screen really well. My camera does not have one and I am fine with that. The one I have is the Fuji Finepix F20. I did a lot of research and it got really good reviews from professional photographers. It is simple to use and takes great pics and is priced very competitively for all the features.

Question : Question about using the viewfinder of a different camera?
I recently heard that people are buying old TLR cameras in okay condition with no intention of putting film in them.Apparently they are just using the camera for its viewfinder and using their own digital camera to take a photo of whatever is appearing in the viewfinder of the TLR camera. It sounds interesting because I have a few TLR cameras that I don't plan on putting film in, mostly because I don't feel like going to the trouble of respooling 120 to 620 or 616. Does anyone know anything else about this?
Answer:
Hmm, I just tried it with my Mom's old Argoflex, and the results were disappointing. It was hard to focus on the screen first of all, and when I checked the image, it was out of focus. There were also some weird reflections going through it. Oh yes, and it was backwards.

Question : Four-thirds cameras, is it true their viewfinders are smaller than usual?
Four-thirds cameras, is it true their viewfinders are smaller than usual?
Answer:
Actually, as far as I know, it's the sensors that are smaller than usual. The larger the sensor the better the photos coming from it.

Question : does anyone know what compact digital cameras have viewfinders as well as screens?
I find on sunny bright days I cannot see the screen clearly but very few (if any!) small pocket sized cameras come with a viewfinder window. Are there any at all?
Answer:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare.aspEnter what you want, and it will give you current (even discontinued models, if you tell it so) models of the camera you are looking for.

Question : Is Canon known for thier viewfinders to be not 1000% accurate?
sorry, its 100%
Answer:
Well, the answer is going to depend on the camera, not the brand. For example, an optical viewfinder that is separate from the picture taking the lens will never be 100% accurate, and they get worse as the subject(s) get closer to the camera. This is known as a parallax error, because the optical viewfinder is offset from the actual imaging lens. However, SLRs where the optical viewfinder is through the same lens used for exposing the film or sensor usually show about 98 to 100% of the fully exposed area. It's so close to 100%, and usually very conservative that you won't miss anything and in fact, you may get slightly more in the final version.Digital cameras with screens usually show 100% of what's being captured, unless they are cheaply and poorly designed. A digital SLR will allow you to compose properly, then you can review on the LCD to make sure that the composition is right. Again, on a digital SLR, the viewfinders are usually conservative, cropping slightly on the edges, so the final file will show a few more pixels that what you might see through the viewfinder. The brand isn't important at all; what is important is the type of camera and viewfinder used. With a Canon (or any other brand) point and shoot, the optical viewfinder will be less accurate as your subject gets closer, but the LCD screen will be accurate. With an SLR, the optical viewfinder will be correct, but may crop a few pixels along the edges.

Question : Are Flipback angle viewfinders efficient and do they expand image range?
My camera, Coolpix l100 doesn't come with a viewfinder, so I'm wondering if these flipback angle viewfinders will increase accurate shooting, here's a link.http://www.amazon.com/Flipbac-Viewfinder-Protector-Digital-Cameras/dp/B002N2V0K2
Answer:
NOAll they are is a mirror that will allow you to view the LCD from different angles.Squeezing the shutter release and steadying the camera will have to do.

Question : are there any small digital cameras left with viewfinders?
I would like to get a compact digital camera for snapshots, but none seems to have a viewfinder any more. In bright light LED screens are however pretty useless. Are there any left which bother to have a view finder? I've been looking at Canon Powershot or Sony Cybershot cameras...
Answer:
There are still a few compacts with viewfinders. The Powershot A1100IS would probably suit you.12mp, that all important viewfinder, Image Stabilization, 4x optical zoom....http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-A1100IS-Stabilized-Silver/dp/B001SER4BK/ref=dp_ob_titl e_ceA Cybershot with a viewfinder.10mp, 5x optical zoom, Super Steady Shot, HDTV....http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Cybershot-DSCW170-Digital-Optical/dp/B0012V3D3C/ref=sr_1_1?s=phot o&ie=UTF8&qid=1276545747&sr=1-1

Question : Whats with all of the hype of people using LCD cup viewfinders of their DSLRs?
Why would tyou put something huge on your lcd when you have a real viewfinder right there? They are cheap though so I guess why not.
Answer:
It is necessary for those using their dSLR's as video cameras. It it the only way to assure that your video images are in focus. And they are NOT inexpensive either. A remote LCD can cost over $400, the 3x hood another $150 or moreFor still photography, the viewfinder is still the best and easiest to use.

Question : What would cause the viewfinder of a camera to not work, but pictures to come out perfectly?
We have a canon 20D that all of a sudden, when you look through the viewfinder, NOTHING is in focus, not when you use manual or auto focus. But when you take a picture, they are all coming out clear. What the heck is going on and how do we fix it? We've had this camera for 3 years and this has never happened!
Answer:
Check the diopter adjustment wheel to the top and side of the viewfinder. Look through the viewfinder, and turn this wheel until the boxes indicating the focus point in the viewfinder look their sharpest. This is the point at which the diopter adjustment wheel is set properly for your eyes.
