Questions & Answers
Question : "So-called hunting spring guns (toy)" compresses air heating it up to 500 degrees. Why doesn't material melt?
Homemade PVC ones don't melt.

Answer:
Randkl called it!This question reminded me of a gun that used the compression/heat thing as part of it's operating cycle. The Daisy VL.The Daisy VL was a unique .22 rifle made in the 1970's that used a caseless .22 cartridge. The cartridge was ignited by the heat produced from a compressed air piston, that had to be c ocked for every shot. These rifles aren't that rare, and are often seen at gunshows, as are the cartridges. Even though the ammo has not been produced since the very early 1980's it seems to age well and still shoots reliably. Performance was equal to the .22long rifle round.

Question : Spring loaded toy gun is used to shoot a ball straight up in the air.?
A spring-loaded toy gun is used to shoot a ball of mass 1.50 kg straight up in the air. The spring has spring constant k=667 N/m . If the spring is compressed a distance of 25.0 centimeters from its equilibrium position and then released, the ball reaches a maximum height (measured from the equilibrium position of the spring). There is no air resistance, and the ball never touches the inside of the gun. Assume that all movement occurs in a straight line up and down along the y axis.Find the muzzle velocity of the ball (i.e., the velocity of the ball at the spring's equilibrium position ).Find the maximum height of the ball.I really dont know how to set up this problem. Any help of how to start this will be a great help thanks.

Answer:
PE(spring) = 1/2kx^2=>PE(s) = 1/2 x 667 x (0.25)^2 =>PE(s) = 20.84 J=>By the law of energy conservation:-=>PE(s) = KE(initial) =>1/2mu^2 = 20.84=>1/2 x 1.50 x u^2 = 20.84=>u = √27.79=>u = 5.27 m/sAgain by the law of energy conservation:-=>PE(final) = KE(initial)=>mgh = 1/2mu^2=>h = u^2/2g=>h = 27.79/(2 x 9.8)=>h = 1.42 m

Question : Where can I find one of those blow up toys that you punch down and they spring back up?
I want to get one for my son. I had one when I was little - and I'm only 28. Mine was Fred Flintstone. You blew it up to about three feet tall and it would fall over when you hit it but it would pop right back up, kind of like a big balloon. I can't find it because I don't even know what it's called. Thanks!

Answer:
I believe I have seen them in my local Toys 'R' Us. I couldn't find any on the website, but I found a Bozo the clown one at Amazon.com. Here the link: http://www.amazon.com/Rocket-USA-Bozo-Bop-Bag/dp/B00067TAWG/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qi d=1194926798&sr=1-1

Question : Getting your child to part with toys?
My daughter is almost 5 and I can not get her to give up toys. Her room has become overrun with toys, toy pieces, and stuffed animals.. There is literally no room. Many of the pieces are small parts and missing pieces to things that are broken or missing. Half of the things she no longer plays with because there is so much stuff she forgets she has them! But when I try to do spring cleaning to take some of the old toys to the goodwill, she freaks out, cries and doesn't want them to go. I don't want to just take them away and have the problem/fear become worse.. How can I get her to part with all this old stuff??

Answer:
Tell her that it's time for other children to play with the toys and that toys get sad if they are piled up with no one playing with them. Other children will love them as much she has. Then help her sort things into piles of stuff that is broken/ missing for the trash, old stuff that she has outgrown, old stuff to save, and new stuff to keep. Let her have some control even if it seems unreasonable to you but set a limit, like 15 items, and maybe reward her with a small treat or lunch out.

Question : A physics teacher pushes a spring toy compressing the spring, causing the suction cup to stick to the base of?
the toy. When the teacher removes her hand, the toy pops straight up and just brushes against the ceiling. She does this demonstration five times, always with the same result. When the teacher repeates the demonstration for the sixth time the toy crashes against the ceiling with considerable force. The students notice that in this trial, the spring and toy sperated from the base at the moment the spring released. The teacher puts the toy back together, repeats the demonstration and the toy once again just brushes against the ceiling.Explain in terms of mass and energy, why the spring toy hits the ceiling in the 6th trial and not in the other trials.

Answer:
In the 6th trial the toy and spring separated. Therefore the mass of the spring is lost and all of the kinetic energy is contained in the upward flying toy. Since the toy has less mass than the toy + spring, the toy flies farther.Best wishes and good luck.

Question : What is the toy popular in the 80s for toddlers/young kids that springs up?
It was a rectangular-shaped plastic box about 12" x 8" and about 4" tall. There was like a board area that pushes down and you had lots of little shapes that you had to put in their spots before the timer went off and the board sprang up and the pieces would go flying. The little pieces were yellow plastic. I can't remember what this game was called, can anyone else?

Answer:
The game you are looking for is called Perfection. While I doubt you would want your toddler to play with this type of game today, it was more for younger kids to play with. The little shapes proved very easy to swallow for toddlers and was later adjusted in age to be appropriate only for ages 10 and up.

Question : Pop up toys?
I have a pop up toy with a sucker on the bottom that you stick to a surface and then after several seconds it jumps into the air. The total compression of the spring is 1.2cm and it jumps 34cm into the air and the mass of the toy is 0.65g if gravity is 9.81ms-2, how would i work out what the spring constant is ?

Answer:
use energy.5*k*0.012^2=0.65*9.81*0.34solve for kk=2*0.65*9.81*0.34/0.012^230111.25 N/m__________________-

Question : Trying to find a pop up ball toy?
I saw a child playing with this simple toy but cannot find it anywhere. It stood on the ground and he put a ball on it and pressed it down. (There is obviously a spring and a delay mechanism), he stood over it with a bat (rounders/baseball) and when it popped up, he tried to hit it.When I try to find it using search engines I either hit a ball thrower for a dog, or an expensive tennis ball launcher for tennis serves.Does anyone know what this is called, or where to get one? Thanks

Answer:
I think you are talking about the stand they use for T ball. Look up T ball and see if you can find it. Also, ask in the Sports category and someone there might know.

Question : Help: Uncontrollable Dog.?
OK, so I have a dog. 3 years old, this dog is very energetic. Symptoms: Uncontrollable walks; walking until she is choking herself...harnesses don't work and neither does anything I could do to stop her, including what should be done with the whole not rewarding for poor behavior and stopping when pulling or chasing or barking. Nothing seems to work. I have read up on the subject and nothing is seeming to work. Next, Manic barking. Literally she will stand there and stare at you and bark for 10 minutes straight. Reprimanding does nothing and she just continues if you ignore her. She is impossible to catch and runs at every chance to get away. To be honest she just wants to play, but there is a fine line between playing and instigating for a conflict which normally what it is. Similarly, with in this topic she also barks at any noise or any passer-by. This is probably territorial, but there is no stopping her.OK next, ordinary training does nothing. I have tried training with treats as any obedience school would do and all she does is get one for doing something good and then get crazy and attack for the rest of them. Scolding does nothing and I am at the point where I have to defend myself from her. She seems to have so much energy and has never had any training from her family that she just is always doing something wrong. Its just bizarre that she does not respond to anything. On the completely opposite side she has her moments where she will sit with you and be the most lovable thing on earth. Then someone with a basketball will walk by out front and off she goes completly oblivious to yelling or physically picking her up (medium dog) and removing her. I just dont know what to do and I have read every dog artical out there. Nothing works. Please help. I need that woman on TV...lol In my reading I found this which pretty much sums it all up:Some dogs seem to live a manic life and are like furry wind-up toys with springs: While other dogs walk, they run. While others nap, they pace. On the leash, they tug and yank their owners down the street. Off the leash, they seek confrontation and then may run off. They bark excessively, jump up on nicely attired strangers, mouth and tug the leash, steal food off the counter, and demand a tremendous amount of attention. (www.petplace.com)Thanks for all the great responses! On the topic of remaining calm and in control, I am consistent and calm but to no avail. I could stand there for 20 minutes waiting for her to stop barking or pulling. Trust me I have done it...lol. To add a bit more which I know I will hear about...(be kind) this is not my dog. This is my girlfriend's family dog. They are on vacation and I am watching the house. I only live a block away and I've been around for 3 years so she does respect me...the dog that is. I am practically part of the family and the dog sees me as that. For proof the dog actually responds to me better than most of the family because of the consistency. The family unfortunately does nothing to control the dog even though they do not like it. I have talked about professional care for the dog, but its just not common enough for them to consider it. I am merely looking for a way that I can bring some kindness to this dog and help the whole family. Thanks again for all the help! Thanks for all the websites! All dogs are going to be different, but is there any time when you should just give in and say "OK this is absolutely for a professional"? I've been at it for a few weeks now and there is some progress, but not much. By the way I did have a dog of my own (RIP 10/2008 17 year old German Short Hair...wow!) and have trained her traditionally with minimal problems. Thanks again and keep any new ideas coming!!!

Answer:
The problem I am reading is that you are trying to deal with her after she is over threshold for the distraction. By that point she is so excited or distracted by the 'thing" she is focussing on, she has no interest in you or ability of focus on you even if she wanted to. Instead, you must teach her the behavior you want when she is calm and slowly increase the distraction level. For example, your example of standing there being calm while she is barking or running accomplishes nothing. She ignores you as she is highly stimulated by what is going on around you. You need to teach her some skills how to be calm at home with nothing else going on around her. (Such as go mat, and calming behaviors on mat like laying down, head down, hip rolls etc. Combined with playing games like "Look at That Dog" where she glances at the other dog but also looks back to you for the reward. This is done at a distance where she can control herself. Over time, that distance will decrease as she learns that you are more exciting. I'd highly recommend you read "Control Unleashed" by Lelsie McDevitt and see if you can find a trainer that uses her methods to help you.She has a www.youtube.com/user/lesliemcdevitt page to have a look at how she handles her highly aroused JRT with no attention span. There is also a yahoo discussion group where you can ask questions and others who are in the same boat can help you. You must read the book before joining. Check your library or order on online.I use the methods extensively with my own dogs as well as clients dogs with great success. http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/CU_support/

Question : A spring-loaded toy gun is used to shoot a ball of mass m = 1.50 kg straight up in the air. Find the velocity?
A spring-loaded toy gun is used to shoot a ball of mass m = 1.50 kg straight up in the air. The spring has spring constant k = 667 N/m. If the spring is compressed a distance of 25.0 centimeters from its equilibrium position y = 0 and then released, the ball reaches a maximum height, hmax (measured from the equilibrium position of the spring). There is no air resistance, and the ball never touches the inside of the gun. Assume that all movement occurs in a straight line up and down along the y axis.Find vm, the muzzle velocity of the ball (i.e., the velocity of the ball at the spring's equilibrium position y =0).And, find the maximum height, hmax, of the ball.Any and all help is much appreciated! Thanks so much in advance!

Answer:
Es - PEb = KEb½ky² - m*g*y= ½mv² orv² = (k/m)*y² - 2*g*y a) Vm = √v² = 4.78 m/sb) Hmax = Vm²/(2g) = 1.168 m
