These are highly polished solid metal flip over tops. They have a chrome like finish and are excellently machined. Simply spin it as normal and watch it suddenly flip over and then continue to spin upside-down. Flip over tops (often known as a The Tippe Top) were originally invented in 1950 by the Danish engineer Werner Ostberg. His inspiration can from a visit to South America where he had seen local people playing with a small, round fruit. When they turned it by the stalk like an old-fashioned spinning top, it would spin for a second and then invert and spin on the stalk. However some credit should be given to Helene Sperl who in 1891 patented a "Wendekreisel" in Germany. However the patent ran out and it was never mass produced.

Let's look at the top first since the proton is fairly similar.Suppose you have a rapidly spinning top that is not perfectly oriented up and down. Then gravity will produce a torque on this top. It turns out that when you look at the equations of rotational motion, this torque causes the axis of spin to move in a circle which is parallel to the ground.Essentially the same thing happens with a proton in amagnetic field. The field produces the torque, which causes the orientation of the spin of the proton to change. In both cases, that change in oritentation is called precession.Another situation that arises is that of the earth. The gravity from the sun causes a slight torque on the earth, so the spin axis changes over time. In the case of the earth, this change is slow: it takes alost 20,000 years for the axis to go around in a circle once. This is called precession of the equinox.

I've been fascinated by objects with a very peculiar design, one of which is a spinning top. Examples of which include the Dreidel in Judaism. First off, how can you make it so that it spins on the ground for long enough? Second, what is the symbolic signifigance of such objects?

Spinning tops continue to remain upright due to conservation of angular momentum. It's basic physics. The more angular momentum it has - the more mass extended from the center and the more angular velocity - the harder it will be for some force such as gravity to topple it. An object with a lot of mass, symmetrical about a narrow balance point to reduce the effects of friction, that is easy to spin extremely fast, will stay upright a very long time.I have no idea what the symbolic significance is, but I suspect it has something to do with the mystery, at least to primitive man who knew nothing about science, of how it could remain upright. They probably believed it was God's will or something.
