Questions & Answers
Question : How are magnets used in our everyday lives?
What are some objects that are used in our everyday lives include magnets to operate? And how does it operate with the magnet?
Answer:
In my life, they hold things on my refrigerator

Question : Why do magnets attract each other parallel to the field, when all the forces are perpendicular?
I know F= q v X B and F = I X BBut these equations give a force perpendicular to the magnetic field, but magnets attract directly. Is there some kind of entropy change when the magnets get closer? Is it a thermodynamic effect? Anybody seen any source on this?
Answer:
2 bar magnets with parallel but opposing poles will attract strongly. They each provide a flux path for the other. If you drop a ceramic magnet and it breaks, it will break mostly parallel to the pole direction, because of increased internal stresses. try to put the pieces together again, and they will repel. If you purposely break or cut a magnet across the pole direction, they will go back together very well.
|
Question : Why do fridge magnets stick to each other rather than experience the attraction and repulsion seen in other?
I am wondering... why do fridge magnets stick to each other rather than experience the attraction and repulsion seen in other "regularmagnets?
Answer:
If you are talking about the flat "sheet magnet" types, it's because they have a banded magnetic pattern, kind of like this:NNNNNNNNSSSSSSSSNNNNNNNNSSSSSSSSNNNNNNNNSSSSSSSSWhen they come near each other, the N bands are attracted to S bands and vice-versa.If you rotate them and slide them across one another, you can find where the bands are aligned, because they will slide in a "jumpy" fashion. Try it out!

Question : Can magnets damage or be damaged by radio controlled electronics?
I am doing a science project that involves a radio controlled model airplane (it's a "hover car" type thing with model airplane characteristics) and it has magnets on its outer surface. Will the magnets or the "hover car's" electric engine be damaged by being in close contact?
Answer:
no, magnets are not damaged by radio signals or by electronic components.but your next sentence asks something different. "Will the magnets or the "hover car's" electric engine be damaged by being in close contact (with the other magnets) ?"it's an electric motor. but probably not. while a weak permanent magnet can be modified by a stronger one, it appears that the distances are too big for this to happen here..

Question : Would magnets work if the north and south pole disappeared?
I know a free magnet will point to the north, but would it still attract other magnets if it weren't for the north and south pole?
Answer:
Magnets WILL continue to work as a magnet, but no, it won't point to Earth's magnetic north. But its not like your refrigerator magnet would fall off the fridge...
|
Question : What material between 2 magnets will best stop their magnetism towards each other?
Say I have 2 magnets that are close together and want to go together. What material would work best between them to block that magnet fiel?
Answer:
Soft iron will work, but a special material called mu-metal is best. .
|
Question : What exactly happens when you put a piece of iron between magnets?
I know when you get a piece of iron close to a magnet the magnetic field changes so the space behind the magnet is almost free of the magnetic field, But I'm not sure what happens. Also:Let's say I have to magnets facing each other so they repel one another. When you put a plate of iron between them I'm pretty sure the metal will absorb the magnetic field so the magnets aren't repelling anymore. Now if the magnets are facing each other so they attract each one another and the iron goes between the magnets will be attracted to the iron, but will the magnets attract each other anymore?
Answer:
Think of iron as a really good magnetic conductor and air as a really bad one. When you place some iron near a magnet the magnetic field will "flow" far more through the iron than through the air, the space behind the iron is almost free of magnetic field. When you place some iron between 2 magnets you reduce the magnetic field "resistance" by replacing the air with a better magnetic "conductor" and have the same effect as if you moved the magnets closer together. So the forces on the magnets will be stronger.

Question : What kind of magnets should I use?
I like making anything out of felt. I started off making stuffed animals for my niece. Now I am trying to make magnets out of felt (coffee cups, hot dogs, fried eggs, etc.). Does anyone have any suggestions for what kind of magnets I should use? I was thinking of using the flexible inexpensive kind as the felt is not heavy. Someone suggested the Neodymium magnet, but I wonder if that might be too strong.
Answer:
It depends. If the magnet is just for decoration, the flexible will work fine. But if it needs to hold up thick paper, you'd want the stronger magnet. A strong CHEAP magnet will be the right combination..

Question : What kind of magnets are used in maglev trains?
Im doing a science fair project on if you could make a hover car out of magnets, and i wanted to know what magnets to use.
Answer:
you know magnets have north and south right? "Opposites attract" right? Like magnets repel. Maglev trains float because magnets in the track push against magnets on the train. In one part, north pushes against north. South against south. If you get those mixed up, and put north against south, they attract and BLAM your train lands really hard! That works OK on a train because it stays on a fixed track. How do you do that on the open road where there are no magnets at all? You don't. That's why there aren't hover cars.

Question : Is it safe to put magnets in the washing machine and dryer?
I have two pot holders that have magnets built in so you can hang them on the fridge or any other appliance. They are filthy but I don't know if it is safe to put magnets into my washer and dryer. Do you know if this is safe? If not why?
Answer:
You can wash them with no problem. I wouldn't dry them on hot because they may stick to the sides of the dryer and get too hot. Dry them on low or just air dry them.
