Question : What are the best learning toys for children?
I have a 9 mo old daughter and a 2 year old son who isn't speaking yet. He has poor cognitive skills due to having crossed eyes since birth and has had surgeries to correct them and still more to come. He will be seeing a speech and child development therapist next month. Each having different abilities, my daughter is showing signs of catching on earlier than my son did, yet that may be cause her eyes are not crossed. I was just wondering, what are the best learning toys out there that are the appropriate age for my two children?I didn't say his speaking has anything to do with his eyes, yet his dr said it might, seeing how he couldn't even see our face to watch us say the words we've been trying to teach him. Got him evaluated by SoonerStart and he is at the learning level of an 11 mo old so anything we do or try could help. He does have the house one of you mentioned. He has tons of toys, just doesn't seem interested in most. Dr said he just may not see them that well. Is more interested in trucks and things with wheels. Won't let me read to him because he can't see the pictures, or at least shows no interest in them. Thanks though for all your answers.

Answer:
Visual impairments may contribute to speech delays, but usually they are severe impairments. The doctors would know best on that one. As one person wrote, the old fashioned toys are best. Blocks are open ended and inspire a child's imagination. My son, who also has a speech delay and one eye that wonders in (and will need surgery), his wooden train set is his favorite. I have a blog reviewing natural, developmentally appropriate toys:http://www.ecochildsplay.comReading to your child is the most important thing you can do. Keep reading, even if he doesn't show interest. You can read to him while he plays. Telling him stories is a great activity too, that may lead to books. Also, talk to him all the time! Speak constantly about what you are doing so that he hears language and can build his receptive vocabulary. How is his hearing? Good luck with your little ones!

Question : Is anyone else afraid to buy your children toys for christams?
I am very apprehensive about giving my kids toys for christmas this year because of all the recalls. Is anyone as worry as I am, and what are you giving them instead?

Answer:
Hi I have a 4 year old and it has taken forever for myself and my wife to get his xmas presents. Yes the recalls were a factor. and small pieces.. to be honest though you have to let go of a lot of fears and go with what you feel is safe. The usual fisher price Little tykes.. etc. Basically any toy can be dangerous and can be part of a recall.. Basically ... you have to think you cannot protect your child from every single danger you basically have to minimise the dangers... Go with age appropriae toys... and then at least you get away from the too small swallow problem.. have a good xmas and ... bring your kids some joy nt worries.BTW .... the young lady saying she is giving toys that have not been tested on animals .. basically how safe are they.. also .. it is well known hat all the chemicals in everything used by people has been tested on animals. Becasue a comany states they have not tested thier products on animals ony means they havnt doen tthe testing... in the past all the ingredients they use have been tested on aimals. They use already tested chemicals known to be safe.... and then they dont have to test thier final products to forfill sate and federal laws.. Think about it .. if they produced totally untested products.... and a reaction how eer small they would be sued for millions.. these comanies are not stupid but they believe the public are.. and in general unfortunately the public fall for this every day........ You only have to look at comanies like the Body shop... yep ..they were taken to task about this very same thing...

Question : Do you know of any organizations who collect toys for children?
Do you know of any organizations who collect toys for children?I live in northern Oregon, but any organizations that you find, I'll check them out. I'm a high school student and I plan on collecting stuffed animals and older toys from other students to give to some organization.

Answer:
Toys for Tots is a Marines program (nothing wrong with it). But I'd also recommend giving to a local shelter.

Question : Can you use a little bleach to clean plastic children toys?
Hi.I've been given this beautiful plastic toy farm and I want to thoroughly clean it before giving it to my son. Can I use a little bleach? Thanks

Answer:
Dont worry, bleach kinda freaks me out also! :) But yes, you can use bleach. Just make sure you read the instructions about how much to use with how many gallons of water.. Its suppose to be super diluted.. Like, one cap full for every gallon or something like that. And regardless, rinse off the toys several times before giving to your son. Make sure there is no trace of bleach smell at all!

Question : children TOYS!!!!?
What do kids like to play with, categorize these in age groups like:3-4 years old- Teddy bears

Answer:
It's hard to generalize like that because all kids are different and the toy market is constantly changing, I think a better question would be what are kids playing with NOW and categorize into ages groups like...

Question : I would like to start a non for profit organization for needy children to donate toys and books.?
ive thought for some years to start an organization for children. being a mother and a nurse i see the way our economy has forgotten about our children and just not for the holidays do children want toys or books. Im lookin for advice were to begin.

Answer:
You don't need to start a nonprofit to do what you wish to do. In fact, many organizations, houses of worship, schools and other places already organize "toy drives' and "book drives' which they do as part of their charity work. See "Toys for Tots" at http://www.toysfortots.org for an example. I suggest you contact a local school, church or charity and see if they have volunteer opportunities for you to assist them in their efforts in this area.if you decide to start your own anyway, you can see the resources at the Foundation Center at http://www.foundationcenter.org (look under FAQs/Getting Started to find helpful information and tutorials that will help you thru the difficult process. As well, you should see the IRS website at http://www.irs.gov under "Life Cycle of an Exempt Organization" to see what you will need to do to apply for and maintain exempt status: http://www.irs.gov/charities/charitable/article/0,,id=122670,00.html

Question : Selling unused children's toys- How would you respond if you realized your gifts were being sold?
Yesterday, my mother found out from the grandchildren that my sister sometimes sells their toys she gives them as gifts. We always knew she did this, but assumed that she sold them after they grew out of them. Now we know that she sells them before they even get them out of the package. The toy really concerns myself and my mother is a digital art studio that my mother got for the 5 year old for Christmas. It was rather expensive and my mother asked my sister before she bought it, if it was O.K to buy for him. My mother even asked a month ago if he like it. My sister told her that they hadn't installed it and didn't mention that it was already sold. They don't have a lot of money, but we know that they can afford a time share so I don't think the money was necessary for groceries etc.I think that my mother should talk to my sister about it, but she is too upset. Then I think the children should receive modest presents and then any extra money should go into their college fund or a fund to send them to summer camp. This concerns me too, since I don't want my presents being sold on EBAY either. Is is as rude as we think to sell toys that are unused? If so how would you respond?

Answer:
I think this is terribly rude! Money does not grow on trees, and that studio is quite expensive! Gifts are gifts, and too me should not be sold....... If its something she didn't want for her child, then she should have ask your mum for the receipt and exchanged it for something else, not use her children's gifts for money for herself. That very selfish!Id defiantly talk to your sister!
